Hey a dear friend of mine and neighbor is facing eviction due to racial discrimination and as requested by her family I made a a mutual aid campaign for her!! She needs $2500 as a starter point to get a retainer for a housing lawyer and housing stability if she is displaced! racist neighbors have been aggressive with harassment and assaults... and im worried about her safety..!!This will be my pinned till full her goal is met! Her public defender quit at on her while they are less than 12 days before her trial ;___; she is filing to take more legal action but she is still looking for a lawyer or at least to make sure she is housed when she leaves on her own terms. This is urgent so I feel if people put like 5 dollars who has reblogged it can make a difference!! I don't want this amazing woman who I am honored to know loose her housing!!

Something about the bastardization of the story time and time again proves that nobody in power really cares about the people who would resonate with King’s Carrie White. A girl so ugly and repulsive she’s been removed from her own story. The societal need for women and girls to be constantly perceived as attractive is what fuels a fair amount of her torment in the book, but that person isn’t even allowed to exist on the screen. We cannot empathize with her; it isn’t allowed. It’s fascinating to me.

If we wanted to engage in nuance (lol, lmao) on the "are audiobooks reading" debate, we really do need to bring literacy, and especially blind literacy, into the conversation.

Because, yes, listening to a story and reading a story use mostly the same parts of the brain. Yes, listening to the audiobook counts as "having read" a book. Yes, oral storytelling has a long, glorious tradition and many cultures maintained their histories through oral history or oral + art history, having never developed a true written language, and their oral stories and histories are just as valid and rich as written literature.

We still can't call listening in the absence of reading "literacy."

The term literacy needs to stay restricted to the written word, to the ability to access and engage with written texts, because we need to be able to talk about illiteracy. We need to be able to identify when a society is failing to teach children to read, and if we start saying that listening to stories is literacy, we lose the ability to describe those systemic failures.

Blind folks have been knee-deep in this debate for a long time. Schools struggle to provide resources to teach students Braille and enforcing the teaching of Braille to low-vision and blind children is a constant uphill battle. A school tried to argue that one girl didn't need to learn Braille because she could read 96-point font. Go check what that is. The new prevalence of audiobooks and TTS is a huge threat to Braille literacy because it provides institutions with another excuse to not provide Braille education or Braille texts.

That matters. Braille-literate blind and low-vision people have a 90% employment rate. For those who don't know Braille, it's 30%. Braille literacy is linked to higher academic success in all fields.

Moving outside the world of Braille, literacy of any kind matters. Being able to read text has a massive impact on a person's ability to access information, education, and employment. Being able to talk about the inability to read text matters, because that's how we're able to hold systems accountable.

So, yes, audiobooks should count as reading. But, no, they should not count as literacy.

I think I just realized. The reduction of David Lynch to being quirky and weird and surreal really bothers me because of how how much of his work is ultimately about the impenetrability of his experience and the complex feelings he struggles to communicate or even format in a way other people can engage with. So it's just kind of unapologetically of his own cypher, and simply presents its own logic as it is. Which I believe, with all my heart, is an expression of him being autistic. And if you take his work seriously, that he is communicating something, there is such incredible depth to it. He's just straight up sharing his dreams. His deep thought, harvested from disciplined meditation and mystic introspection. People terminating their engagement with it at "he's so weird, it's funny" just betray how little they're willing to step outside their own perspective and seriously consider an autistic mind with respect, or dignity. Particularly one with such a beautiful, weeping heart. All of it was expressing things he had inside him. Even if he was funny, even if it coincided with comedy, he wasn't a joke. He was a genius.

You know that bc women have historically never had opportunities so something is always happening for the first time with women so everyone talking about it or if it's a thing that can be reviewed reviewing it in that patronsing it was good for women :) tone bc they act like thr collective male conciousness is godly with centurirs of worldly experience and womens collective conciousness has been sitting at home doing smth from a British upperclass period peice movie and has never experienced anything. So everything is like omg wow you did that :) like as if they're speaking to a dog or small child. Ppl might think this is well intentiined but this just means they don't hold women's work to thr same standards as mens, they're just putting it in the to be dismissed automatically category and will choose one thing every few years to symbolically hang on the fridge of society like wooow look at that. You did that.

Because the work they keep dismissing like this is consistently good and amazing w maybe a few duds but even those duds are interesting to talk about and analyse. But they will never do that, they don't WANT to look at or think about or do analysis of women's work. They just want progressive points for clapping for it once or twice and then they never wanna thikk about it again they don't engage with anything that comes from women whether they say they like it or dislike it. It's the same level of disengagement both ways
