Reigen Being A Goddamn Adult
I really like the bar scene, and what comes after.
First off, his outfit makes me go āhell yeahā, not because itās particularly fashional but because heās just wearing casual clothes, and that really sets the mood of the episode at that point. The personaās dropped for the moment. Heās winding down, letting himself feel like himself for a couple hours. He wants to get drunk, to drown in his self-pity, because, letās face itā¦
He was projecting onto Mob. He was using Mob as a tool to keep his business alive, and his con still going. Reigen doesnāt just use Mob for Mobās powers. He uses Mob as his tool to prove himself to the world. To prove to his mom that he can still run a business on his own, maybe to prove to himself that he isnāt a total failure for leaving his moreĀ āstableā salesman job to become a psychic. And he uses Mob as his own emotional support. I think that Reigen likes feeling like heās Mobās masterĀ and that heĀ āknows moreā than Mob. He uses Mob as a distraction to bottle up all of the feelings and the fact that he is lonely, has no friends, has a mom who disapproves of him, and really has no one outside of this middle school child to keep him occupied and comforted and talking about his problems. And in a way, Reigen is only strong because of Mob. Because he needs to hold the persona of smarts and strength in front of his student to encourage Mob, and in turn, that forces him to be strong for himself.
And with Mob gone, Reigenās support is gone. He can no longer hold himself up and ignore his struggles. So, heās finally hit with the wave of realization that he has no friends when Mob has plenty.
He goes to a bar. To sulk. But to also look for people heās familiar with. Heās looking for friends.
He hopes. And itās really goddamn sad when you think about it. Yeah, he goes to sulk and wallow in self-pity, but shit, dude, itās his birthday, and the only text he got was from his mom to tell him to get a better job. He wants someone to actually congratulate him. Not as someone to get something from. Not as a businessman. Just a friend. Just another friend telling you,Ā āHappy Birthday!ā
He gets people who want to use him, which is exactly what he said Mobās friends do.Ā
So he starts to justā¦ throw up in an alleyway.
And shit, that hits home. Heās not throwing up because he drank a copious amount of booze. The bartender didnāt give him any alcohol. Heās throwing up because his emotions are going haywire and he hasnāt addressed any of this in years. Yeah, itās amped up for the humor, and I was honestly roaring with laughter at this point, but with some contemplation, itās a bit sad. And then he hits his crisis. And my favorite moment.
He gets the fuck over it.
And thatās whatās different about Reigen. One of my mutuals, @skeilig , mentioned how great it was for Reigen to pull himself back up after like a day of sulking. Theyāre right. Reigen had his time to sulk, but he didnāt wallow in self-pity for longer than he needed to. He had his emotional shit storm, and then he got over it. And thatās the ultimate lesson!
Thatās what separates him from a lot of people. He has the maturity to admit that he fucked up, see that heās in a poor situation, and it is by his hand and his alone that he needs to get over his issues. Thatās what being an adultās all about. Itās not about knowing what to do. Itās about powering through your shit anyway.
