Ok prog theory...
So basically,
What if Bill Bruford stole Phil Collins' dungarees and began wearing them on stage. As a crafty way of covering up his scandalous robbery, he disguised the dungarees as his own by painting a B for Bill (or Bruford) on the front.
Phil Collins would not give up. He missed his dungarees. He needed them. He longed for the material against his skin. He decided to hire Bruford for the 1976 Genesis Trick of the Tail tour in order to communicate with the ex-crimson drummer and barter for HIS dungarees.
Sadly for Phil, he was unsuccessful in returning the item of clothing to his rightful hands. He did however manage to stop Bill from wearing them live as long as Phil shaved his beard. (I believe Bill Bruford developed a hatred of beards after Tony Kaye left yes. Notice that when Jon Anderson started growing his facial hair, Bruford was nowhere to be seen.) This could explain why he didn't wear his signature dungarees in the 1981 reformation of Crimson!
