I just saw someone say they’re voting for Trump because “he’s actually done something with his life” - insinuating that Bernie has not. And I think I need to sit down for a minute because I BEG YOUR PARDON? Bernie “has done nothing” with his life. Okay. Let’s assess that, shall we? This man has marched with Martin Luther King. He’s protested segregation since the age of 21, fought for black Americans since the 1960’s, and the LGBT community since the early 70’s. He’s travelled to Nicaragua to help the suffering locals affected by the warfare against them. He’s been actively campaigning against capital punishment throughout his entire political career, and traveled to Costa Rica to defend its exploited workers. He’s known as the “Amendment King” because he has had more amendments passed than any other Senator. He works with the Native Americans on a regular basis to get them a better deal than what the American government has been forcing them to accept for the past two centuries. He’s rented busses to drive women suffering from breast cancer across the Canadian border so that they may buy the treatment drugs they need to a price they can actually afford. He’s walked the streets of his beloved Burlington with a trash bag over his shoulder to pick up garbage from the street by hand, despite being the mayor and supposed to be above such things. He’s consistently voted against America’s wars and invasions of other countries, in the name of peace. He’s spoken to empty senate floors about the importance of choosing diplomacy over warfare. And on, and on, and on. Bernard Sanders has fought for prison reform, for a higher minimum wage, for the de-militarization of police. He has helped the homeless, fed the hungry, comforted the broken, and stood up for the weak FOR 60 YEARS OF HIS LIFE - but because he’s not a billionaire, that means he’s “done nothing” with his life? What a sad, hollow way of measuring success. Yes, I am a Bernie Sanders supporter. Because you know what? At the end of the day, I would rather live in a concrete shelter with a person that holds compassion and kindness as their guide in life, than in a mansion with someone who doesn’t give a damn about anything but money and making themselves richer. And I couldn’t be less sorry.
