Today I watched a movie I found on the rarefilmm website, a 1989 documentary titled Motel. It’s about people who stay at motels and those who operate motels on the desert highways of the American southwest. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in slice-of-life documents of real strange Americana life in the 1980s. It’s about a lot of other things besides motels. I don’t want to build it up like it’s a lost masterpiece, but It has a similar feel to the 70s and 80s movies made in America by Akerman, Wenders, Malle, and Varda. I am only writing this because the movie seems to be a truly forgotten footnote (16 votes on IMDB, and 10 viewings on letterboxd). I’m sure it will never get a blu-ray or even DVD level restoration. So I felt some kind of urge to attempt to bring at least a tiny bit of attention to it.
