We are currently on a train, leisurely hurtling towards San Diego. We don't have a booth (as we're not a movie studio) but we are emceeing the masquerade, establishing our comics bona-fides for another year, I guess.

We have grumpy little worker bees downstairs packing stuff for Kickstarter fulfillment! This is always a major milestone, if only because we have to clean the house to maintain our dignity. But as excuses go– it's a pretty solid one. Kaja IS planning on streaming tonight, so swing on by!

Today's book is 'Okla Hannali' by R.A. Lafferty, who was possibly the most outré (yet enjoyably readable) prose stylist of the last century. He loved science-fiction, but this one is the fantastical recounting of the life of a native-American and I guarantee you've never read anything like it.

Reference Book Sunday 7/19
Reference Book Sunday! Today's light reading is 'The Ultimate Guide to U.S. Army Survival– Skills, Tactics & Techniques'. Pretty much what is says on the cover, it is guaranteed to make any character you write (or god forbid you) act knowledgeable while rocking that post-apocalyptic lifestyle.

books Today's non-fiction read is 'A City on Mars' by Kelly & Zach Weinersmith. Now, I love me some space exploration, and this is a very readable treatise on the feasibility of all those exciting space projects that we all desperately want and why you're going to have to wait awhile to see them (at best), and in many cases, should we even bother?
Girl Genius for 7/17
I have noticed a distressing trend as I get older: Time seems to pass more quickly. The result is that whereas the quality of work I produce is unchanged (I hope), the amount of time it takes me to create it is increasing. I don't know what to do about that.

An old favorite: "The King Was In His Counting House' by James Branch Cabell. A dryly hilarious and racy book by one of the few authors who went out of their way to deliberately torpedo their own literary careers because they were "becoming too popular for all the wrong reasons". La-dee-dah.

books Today's book is 'The Time of Contempt' by Andrzej Sapkowski. This is part of The Witcher series. Now I love me The Witcher. I've read a lot of the books, and played the game, and even watched the show. So I'll cut a lot of slack…But this particular book I could've done without. 145 pages in and nothing interesting yet. Done.

Built a couple of shelves and rearranged the pantry yesterday. Very satisfying, with a soupcon of art, as people who have experienced my carpentry will know, I build to fit, with zero tolerances.
Book Chat 7/12: Reference Book Sunday
Today's book is: 'Passing English of the Victorian Era' (The Mansplalined Edition) by James Redding Ware. Originally just a catalog of Victorian slang (fascinating in of itself) This new edition steps back and examines How the Victorians used language differently then today. Very useful if you want to read Victorian novels in the original Victorian.

The non-fiction book this week is the illuminating, informative, and incredibly depressing 'The Dictator's Handbook' by Bruce Bueno de Mesquita & Alastair Smith. It's exactly what it says it is on the cover, and after reading it, you'll be able to take over a country–or at least understand the news. Yay.

Today is a "keep your goddamn head down and get to work" day. I hate those, but they are occasionally necessary. At least I have a plethora of podcasts.

Today's book is a genuine Quest Item. I love S.F Noir. In my opinion, the best are those by the late Mike McQuay. The first is "Hot Time in Old Town". There are 4 in the series. Good luck finding them, they're long out of print. They're superbly written– dark, gritty, believable S.F. so hard boiled it'll break your knuckles while turning the pages.

I see they're raising the price of stamps. Again. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for paying postal employees well, those guys work like dogs, but they're doing it JUST before we're about to ship out the latest Kickstarter. In comedy, timing is everything. Argh.

Today's read is "Titanium Noir" by Nick Harkaway. I love me a good hard-boiled detective. Drop them into a science-fiction milieu and I am in Hog Heaven. Go in cold. The writing is so good I won't reveal or spoil anything. I haven't enjoyed a detective this much since reading Raymond Chandler.
