Name: Berwald J. Oxenstierna
Age at Death: Late thirties
Location: The Abandoned Hospital
Abilities: Minor telekinesis. Object manipulation - (He can directly interact with objects for a limited time if he wishes)
Story: During the 1920′s, when the practice of medicine was a bit more lax than what it is today in regards to safety and care of patients, one Swedish Immigrant decided that he had to do his part to help make the medical field a safer place by working his way up and joining the board of ethics for one of the hospitals. In his youth, the Swede had toyed with the idea of becoming a doctor himself but couldn’t handle the blood and death of the position and instead worked to help people in other ways to ensure that the doctors who did care for the patients did the best job possible.
Along the way, he fell in love with one of the doctors at the hospital he also worked for, one Dr. Andrei S. Mihăileanu, and while they could not legally marry at the time, they still had a happy life together. They even adopted a son, Peter, although legally he was only Berwald’s, and they were all happy.
However, their time together was about to be cut short.
Andrei became curious about a string of patient deaths in the hospital and began investigating it since he had been sure that they would pull through. That ended up being a mistake though since the culprit did not want to risk his activities being discovered and staged an “accident” to befall Andrei in one of his labs with an explosion. Killing the Romanian.
Heartbroken, Berwald watched as a small investigation took place and his lover’s death was ruled as an accident and there wouldn’t be more done. However, he knew that Andrei was meticulous in lab safety and usually very careful. And the timing was suspicious since his partner was close to making a break in the case regarding the dying patients. Since no one else seemed to be investigating, he decided to finish Andrei’s investigation, since in his mind it was linked to the good doctor’s death.
As he worked, he could almost feel the energetic man with him, encouraging him not to give up and keep pushing. Uncovering more information. He was on the verge of figuring it all out when he came down with a swift and sudden case of tuberculosis. It was a common ailment of the time so it was not seen as too suspicious even though Berwald was pretty careful about avoiding contagious people and keeping his house clean. The Swede ended up lingering only for a little while before passing on from the disease. Pretty certain that the culprit behind the patient killings got nervous about Berwald getting close and purposely infected some of the Swede’s belongings.
He was surprised that after his passing that he was not fully gone and remained a ghost at the hospital where he worked and ultimately died at. He was worried for Peter, now doubly an orphan, and what would become of him and he also was angry that he too could not finish his partner’s work.
Meeting with Andrei’s spirit again though was one of the better parts and even though the Romanian himself still was incredibly angry at now both of them being dead, it was a tearful and happy reunion.
The mastermind behind it all ended up dying in an accident caused by Andrei, bringing a sense of closure with it. Peter ended up being placed in another home and as he grew up, he looked into what caused it all, figuring out the real story and when he died of natural causes, he joined his fathers at the hospital as well.
Now, Berwald is content to spend his time with his family and the other ghosts that haunt the old hospital. Enjoying the time they have since their time together when alive was cut short. When curious living people come to investigate the old hospital, he is a little curious but a little more wary since Andrei holds a lot more anger and he does not want to see anyone else harmed.
