This is the official blog of Project Canada / I Am Matthewian, a Hetalia spinoff featuring ctcsherry's province and territory characters. We track the #projectcanada and #iammatthewian tags. While we no longer create videos, we still love and appreciate fanworks. Inquire about our discord.
A long overdue reference list for tumblr for ctcsherry's provinces and territories, around which we based the YouTube I Am Matthewian Project (2009-2013) and which subsequently inspired @project-canada (2013-2017).
Please note: not all the characters received human names while the project was active. Please see my post on human name explanations (and the notes for a couple of characters I missed), I have included the fanon names that I am aware of.)
While I did not create these characters, I was part of the cast/crew of IAMP from the fall of 2009 until the end, so I'm happy to clarify whatever I (or anyone else who was around!) can remember or dig up. I also just want everyone to keep in mind that the Hetalia fandom was a very different place in 2009, and a lot of characterizations do rely on tongue-in-cheek stereotypes. They have been interpreted a lot over the past 15+ years by different people. Take it with a grain of salt!
Rather than link to the IAMP wiki, which has been edited by non-cast/crew members and thus has dubious or non-canon information, I'll link to Sherry's (ctcsherry) original bios for each province. While the 2009 LJ post in Hetanada still exists, the images are not retrievable from there even with the WayBack machine.

Some other bits:
I don't know if Sherry's height chart still exists anywhere online currently, but I'll put it here for reference as well.
was halfway through before i was like "damn another grave drawing?" how macabre TTnTT
I finally visited NS for the first time last fall and took the chance to start organizing my photos - this is based off a photo of the old burying ground in Wolfville. As a westie it's so unusual to see 18th century architecture anywhere so that was definitely a huge point of interest for me!
the Yellowknife film fest just passed recently so here she is outside of the Capitol theatre :)
her wool coat is based on a specific 1960s-1980s style that I've been obsessed with for years - I don't know if all of them were made by the Inuvik Sewing Company but it's a good example of the style and occasionally I still see them worn around and get excited! :D
it was the 140th anniversary of Riel's execution this past week and commemorated in Manitoba (the first time a sitting prime minister has ever attended) as well as out here as we are also considered one of the Metis homelands, so I was already thinking about that when I started drawing. This is the gravesite in St. Boniface and the assumption sash (although it's difficult to render in a palette) is modelled after one Riel wore ca. 1860
look man, sometimes ure having a chat with a friend and then they say a line and then u say a line and then u have a song stuck in ur head and ure like lol haha this is a stupid doodle.
I had a weird ass dream involving these two last night. (Ralph and R.J.)
THAT IS LITERALLY THE FACE RALPH MADE, BTW!!!
Alberta walks into R.J’s office in Regina, and asks him if it’s legal to teach an animal how to drive, R.J. replies that it’s neither legal or illegal to do so, and asks him why he’s asking about that.
Alberta doesn’t respond, R.J asks him if it’s out of curiosity or if he’s legitimately thinking about teaching an animal how to drive.
Alberta looks away for a few moments, then books it out of the office, and R.J. literally crawls over his desk to follow Alberta, screaming something about fines and stuff, and that all because Fort McMurray managed to successfully teach Patches how to drive and follow all the traffic laws doesn’t mean that Alberta can.
Don’t know how Patches got thrown in there, but he was… Is this something that my brain made up or not? Don’t know…
Inspired by @shiptalia-sea-of-stars , here’s my own redesign of one of Sherry’s canadian province characters — with a twist! Thank you to you and the @project-canada community for giving this fan web series so much love even today!
The affective feeling I get from Jean’s original design has changed dramatically since meeting my Québécois friends. He’s his own icon and I love him dearly, especially with how he’s evolved through the fandom over the years. I wanted to try and bring the best out of him through the things that my friends are proud of — and play with the big open secret about Canadian identity. I thought it would be hilarious if Matthew’s self-actualisation was achieved through becoming a concept commonly contrasted against what he’s supposed to represent.
Why Ouimet? It’s 3 things: The unanglicised form of Williams, pioneer filmmaker and theatre operator Léo-Ernest Ouimet, and a homophone to “Oui, mais…” (Yes, but…) to reflect the conditionality of his relationships, history and lived experiences. More on that soon!
belated discovery day doodles :) a couple of different 1890s outfits
not to get emo on a little post (forgive me ive been very emo lately) but this gal here is the Reason i joined IAMP back in 2009. I was having a conversation about this recently that made me get all misty eyed and everything and it is very important to me personally that i got to be her VA and that i got to have some input on her human name and characterization.
the klondike gold rush has been my big history obsession since i was old enough to have one. theoretically it says 'sourdough' on my birth certificate because i was born in the territory, haha, so its been part of me for as long as i have been me. (don't ask why my yukon health card is more legible than my alberta one shh)
anyway discovery day is celebrated the third monday of august each year. you'll see skookum jim often listed as the guy responsible for discovering gold in the klondike, but you'll see kate carmack credited less often because [gestures to a long history of the erasure of Indigenous women] yknow.
anyway eons ago i did a little comic about the gold rush here if you want to read it in which i am much more eloquent and less dead and more ambitious lol
