Hi!

I’m a huge fan of your work, and was wondering if you have any tips for storyboarding? I’m not a career artist, but I want to start storyboarding for my own personal projects / for fun, and try to bring my ideas to life.

Do you have any little bits of advice you wish you knew when working on boarding, or tips to help start framing shots in a way that isn’t stuff?

RAMBLE AHEAD SORRY - hi hi! i really appreciate that!! storyboarding is something I've done since I was a kid so a lot of it comes naturally at this point but lemme see if I can give some advice... Finding the right composition to compliment the shot/focus or feeling of the shot is the most important thing, its like a puzzle. Normally when Im boarding I have to try several comps per shot to get the right feeling! for my indie animation Hark, for example, here's my messy scribbles for a scene I was struggling with:

I didnt end up going with any of these lmao but I wanted a feeling of desperation/struggle and went with some dramatic angles to try and sell that feeling. The shot ended up having too much going on for the budget and ended up suuuper simplified but I kept some of that drama by zooming out slowly from a top-down angle. you cant always do what you want with a shot, sadlee ;--;

I would recommend 'reverse-storyboarding' scenes from your favorite movies/shows/ect and thinking hard through why they went with certain angles/camera motions and where they want the audience to look. The golden ratio is also very important here, it applies to most comps and I use it quite a bit in my own work:

the end of the 'curl' is usually approximately where you want your audience to look and you try to build your scene around it (again...does NOT apply to all comps, just a handy tool for some!)

uhh im yammering here but as a last thought oftentimes each shot needs to link naturally into the next, so you have to figure out how to naturally lead your audience from one focus to the next without it looking janky.

with this wpnz animatic, i used the camera to assist moving the attention from him to a security guard who took his arm (green being the start of the cam and red being the end point) wpnz looked down from the injured arm, then looked to the right, then motion followed with the cam - naturally refocusing the attention to where it should be! (a silly example but whateva)

I can only assume the original post was deleted and it seems as though I have subsequently been blocked, (my original response has been embedded below for context). I'm not surprised and quite frankly, rather disappointed, but from what I've heard about the backlash, I'd like to hope this means the matter is put to bed and lessons were learnt.

In doing so, I want to stress that any harassment against the original poster should NOT be tolerated.

The point of calling it out was to recognise that this kind of rhetoric was bullying and insulting. Whether it was intentional or not. Especially when you directly single one person out.

Using the personal experiences of an artist to try and justify contentious fan discourse is also incredibly narrow-minded and very dismissive of the blog post's original purpose.

Let's not stoop to this behaviour. Set an example and rise above it. Be mindful of how you interact and think before you speak. Social media is not a empty void where what we say does no damage or has no consequences. If you treat it like one, you learn the hard way by the boat load. We all have a responsibility with our platforms.

If the OP does somehow find this post - You are a very talented artist and creative and wish you well in all your endeavours. Genuinely. It saddens me that this is our first interaction, but I also hope you will grow from this. I took the post very personally. Both as a former crew member of SMG4 and also as a close friend of Starteas. It was unwarranted. I hope if our paths cross again it will be on better terms.
