Hello! And welcome to where I blog about my short film!
My name is Jules and I’m 23 and this is my masters thesis.
The film is called “Preen.”
I wrote this short story a while ago and I thought it would make an interesting short film. I’ve been playing with the idea of it for a little bit now, so we will see what happens.
Anyway!
Feel free to ask any questions or leave your contents and cries! A lot of what I’m doing is self taught, so input can bd helpful 🫀
Sketch dump of girl! In reverse order from creation, you can kinda see the evolution, her design is about to go through a finalization in the next two weeks! Also my animatic is almost re-done
These took me, probably about, 40 hours to create?
I got the base for these wings from @sunnybrook1 but I modified the final product to fit what I had time/energy/patience and money for. It was honestly incrediblly helpful even with all the modifications I made! I would recommend their guide >
I ended up making 3 wings total. The first was a test to see if It was even worth making another, but I found a few flaws.
1- there was not a lot of support on the feathers, and they were not placed with intention, so many of them would bend and rip when worn
2- there was no hinge method? I just kinda, didn’t make one, so I had to just cut the wing in two pieces, (I still kinda did this for my final version though) and attached the front and back to some cardboard.
3- there is no where for me to put my hands, and the added mechanism is, well, very visible.
My fixes-
You can kinda tell but the left and right wing are a bit different. I have to add a few more peices of wire to the first wing I made. After testing it was still to flimsy. I also replaced the leather chord with white shoelace. This shoelace helps to keep the feathers in place while allowing them to have movement. The wire also helps with this.
I used a similar method as the prototype wing to hinge the “hand” and the “arm” of the wing.
I still used cardboard and Bristol supports, just smaller and they were hidden and attached with more intention.
My hand needs to have a place to control the wing, so I created a pocket that it slides into, allowing full range of motion with minimal strain. This pocket also doubles to hide the hinge mechanism and helps keep those long feathers sturdy.
Brown Kraft paper and various paint pens(for planning on the wall)
24in T-Square
A lot of tacks.
Cardboard box I found!
Recycled Bristol paper
Old fitted sheet
Big hot glue gun
Strathmore 400 series heavyweight drawing paper roll
16 and 18 gauge galvanized steel wire
Shoe lace
A big screw I found laying around? (It wasn’t pointy on the end) (used it to hold the big feathers together to hinge things better)
2mm and 4mm EVA foam
White acrylic paint
I still have a few modifications to make, but I imagine those can’t take to long, and I actually ran out of paper… so… need more to make more feathers…
Anyway, lots of fun to be honest. Maybe a bit stressfull if it’s not the only big project you’re working on! But super fun. Paper is a great way to make feathers, they are just delicate!!!
version 12 anyone? I changed the color i was using on the featehrs to purple so it woud stop looking like gore but still be noticed in the boards lol. i am happy with this.
As someone who admitted myself willingly to a hospital, it in fact WAS the wakeup call I needed, and I am grateful I did it. The nurse I met there, Julie, saved my life. But ya. If it wasn't so stigmatized to talk about, I think people would kill themself less.
I did talk to my therapist about this, though. You can talk about suicidal thoughts and ideations in the office without it meaning you get whisked away immediately. Its scary and hard to start talking about, but most human beings think about that stuff atleast a little teeny bit!
It's hard, and it hurts, but if you have a therapist, do ur best to open the door of that conversation.
