What if she just finally got fucking tired of carrying him out of every fight with a bullet in his gut that should have been hers? Maybe that last fight with the Meta was just the one time she couldn’t fucking haul her brother out of the battlefield. She just thought, No. And left him.

Maybe the North she let die on that battlefield wasn’t the same North from Project Freelancer. Maybe years with a voice in his head was finally starting to gut him for his sanity. Maybe Theta wasn’t stable like Delta. Maybe South couldn’t put the bullet in his head herself so she let the Meta do it for her. 

There are a hundred versions of the way South lets her brother die. In all of them she says, “Now I’m just wondering how I’m gonna live without him.”
