Creating smokescreens
Deception
the act of hiding the truth, especially to get an advantage (aren’t we all?) Police uncovered a shocking story of lies, deception and blackmail. It wasn't really magic - just some kind of clever visual deception. Her husband was a practised liar, capable of extraordinary deception. Associated accomplices: exaggeration, charade, humbug, lies You sit in your luxurious designer outdoor chair, gazing over the opulent view from your balustrade, the crystal wine glass in hand, the dior frames on. You re casually flickering trough your iphone with the other hand... the picture you posted of your whale sporrting trip in Norway got 1789 likes on instagram and 654 on facebook. You feel content, at inner peace after your evening yoga routine. Tomorrow is another beautiful day when you will meet wonderful people that all love and cherish you for who you truly are.

Carlos Rodríguez Casado was born in Palencia, Spain, in 1993. Taking an interest in art and illustration at a very early age, Carlos has been awarded in several speed painting contests all over Castilla y León, Spain, since the age of eight. In 2011, he moved to Madrid to begin his studies in Illustration & Design. In 2013, he made his debut as a performance artist in Acción!MAD festival at the world renowned Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid. He has also participated in many exhibitions to date. One of his pieces became the oficial key art for the MTV show Teen Wolf, being exhibited at Times Square and the Art Directors Club in New York.
Currently, he works as a press illustrator for national newspapers such as El Mundo, or magazines like Cambio16, Metropoli, Interviú or the British Innovations in Newspapers. Casadas illustrations are classically satirical on the one hand, exaggerating existing traits to capture the essence of his subjects (often caught up i then current affairs like Leonardo Dicaprios predicted win of an Oscar). On the other hand there is a level of deconstruction in his works, commenting the fleeting nature of the images themselves - it is as he wants to remind us of the fictuous and fickle reality of social media that build stories instantly just to have them forgotten the day after. What we remember is the gross exaggeration, the most basic and sensational of occurences. Thus reality and satire has become one, even without the pencil of satire. In a sea of images and events we all get lost and forgotten.
Each new year a blank slate. But is it really? We can not disconnect the facts of the previous year, just as little as we can disconnect our past with a new haircut. The sharpness is not there, the details are blurred, but we have a political and social frame. For a significant change we have a whole lot of work ahead of us. Time to give this old globe a bypass if we think it is heading for a wrong direction. Illustration by Madridbased spanish talent Carlos Rodríguez Casado Homepage of the artist:

To new beginnings
the Dreaded 2016 has let go of it’s grip on the World but not before killing off George Michael, Carrie Fisher (Forever Princess Leia in our hearts) and her mother Debbie Reynolds in a last fell swoop. Let’s hope 2017 will prove more fruitful and less plentiful in the beloved celebrities Death department.

Szymon Kurpiewski’s productivity is unquestionable. The same goes for his versatility in his field contemporary masculinity, sexuality, desire, perversion and serenity. His style and techniques vary and he is equally good at portraying broad provocative themes as contemporary portraiture.
This is evident in his recent series of male portraiture in which he captures the spirit of young gay men, giving the pictures depth and elevating distance by adding a frame within the frame. These kind of portraits are a dime a dozen but Kurpiewski gives them his edge - a quality of execution and purpose. We imagine that the portrayed are proud of these pictures - it is 21 century portraiture done with panache. Homepage of our artist: http://szymon-kurpiewski.blogspot.se/
