not to be dramatic, but life really is about choosing love despite
I love love love to draw Simon gardening
Two universes
"Simon mistakes Grace for an angel" listen hear me out. GRACE is half convinced SIMON is an angel. Think about it, after however many years away from any and all humans the first one he sees is in an ocean of blood with entirely unnatural injuries muttering something about being abandoned by "Eden" and "Father"?? He's talking about the doomsday Grace barely avoided like it HAPPENED to him. When he finally tells Grace about the eel he functionally describes being Jesus in the desert, thalassophobe edition. Also if I remember correctly he's like CRAZY strong
Totally normal for a legitimate for-profit company to refuse to reclaim or stop running their products even after they're no longer being paid to do so. I'm sure it's very normal to just keep running your service for free when your contract's been terminated. Spending money to continue running cameras that supposedly no one is looking at is definitely not an indicator they are just run by the federal government to spy on everyone and only a wacko conspiracy theorist would think so.
#wait sentinel aus are based on an actual show???#I thought they were just one of those inexplicable Fandom Things - im WHEEZING, i love this so much
never Once have I ever seen a reference to an actual extant intellectual property, itās always āwhat if we had this super complicated codependent pseudo-magic sci-fi thing going onā and then just running with it OTL
i do not have the spoons to FULLY get into it, as it demands, but the one with the military haircut (heās a cop, aĀ āprotectorā, cāest la vie) is Jim Ellison, former Army Ranger, repressed fool. curly haired bb isĀ Blair Sandburg, an anthropology grad student who realizes Jim is a Sentinel of legend, latches onto him like a remora, and Jim basically leans on Blair like a crutch all the while pretending he doesnāt care for him in a veryĀ āI made you a friendship braceletāĀ āugh grossāĀ āwell you donāt have to---āĀ āshut up Iām gonna wear itā way
they were handsyĀ
HANDSY I SAY
they STARTED handsyĀ
they moved in togetherĀ in like. ep one.Ā
they become partners in the cop sense, they do a lot of gift of the magi shit for each other, every time I start to think of the stupid shit they do for another I remember More Weird Shit, codependent fucking weirdosĀ
Okay, I absolutely MUST chime in For The Sentinel which NEVER gets the respect of its peers just because "the plots were a little convoluted" and the "central premise wore a little thin as the seasons went on." those men were in love. THOSE MEN WERE LOVERS!!!!!
What you need to know about The Sentinel is that the very first episode is about Jim Ellison acquiring mystical powers. YES I want to be clear, the way he acquires these powers is "problematical" and "not great, respecting indigenous cultures wise" but okay, so he's got these powers that make all of his senses amped up to dangeous levels. he can hear things no one else can hear, he can see things like he's fucking legolas, you get the deal.
so he goes to the doctor to be like "i feel weird" because of course, and Blair Sandberg, twink anthropologist to the stars, BREAKS SEVERAL LAWS to get in Jim's exam room and sayāi know how to help you. i know what's wrong with you. i know how to make life better. and jim ellison looked at the little twink man and said yes....YES to love YES to life YES to living in a 1 bedroom LOFT apartment together. YES to being soulmates and life partners! YES I'LL MARRY YOU!!!!!!
This is the ORIGINAL big gruff german sheppard/lil yapping chihuahua pairing. And fandom looked at this show and said "this is good. i will build a kingdom upon this land. from now on, these are the two genders: big, angry, powerful, forced to their knees by circumstances beyond their control AND small, jokester, has skills INVALUABLE to Big, bad self worth. And then so the sentinel/guide aus RULED the pervert community, and everyone rejoiced.
And then SPN looked at this, and said "but what if the guides also had wet butts" and u kno what? innovation is CRUCIAL.
my friend had Sentinel VHS tapes acquired from someone on the internet and basically every episode featured tough military man Jim being driven to his knees in agony verging on madness bc of his mystical senses being overwhelmed and tiny commie academic Blair soothing him and healing his agonies by touching him (and communicating with him via psychic leopards????) so they could save lives and the show wasnāt GOOD but my god it was something
It's also the little black dress of AUs for other fandoms - Mulder/Scully, Clark/Lex, Derek/Stiles. It goes with everything! :)
So today I learned that The Sentinel was a show, and so what is the term for when you get un-Goncharoved?
I THOUGHT IT WAS A FANDOM TROPE LIKE OMEGAVERSE
God this was such an important fandom to me. My Sentinel friends are my family now, more than a quarter of a century later. Merryish, who first offered my fanfic a home* in ā1997? 1998?ātaught my kid to snorkel 20 years later. Flummery are my kidās fairy godmothers. I basically married astolat 25 years ago. And every time I see one of you Sentinel people online (waves to a bunch of you who reblogged this) I feel like Iāve run into someone from the old country! That fandom literally changed my life.
But also, fannishly, so inventive! Some of the first vids I ever saw back before there were computers āVHS vids, wonderful ones. (Shout out to GloRo!) Great great fanfic and art. I still have gorgeous zines from this period. And the loft tape! Go to fanlore and look up the loft tape you guys!!
*before the AO3! When you needed someone to host your fic! This is part of why we built the AO3! So many (so many!!!) Sentinel people involved in building the AO3! Astolat built the Sentinel archive, 852 Prospect, a decade before the AO3, that was our first practice archive software. That software was adapted and used in other fandoms like due South. Seah and I were both DS archivists. This is all part of the story of how the AO3 came about. The sentinel/guide trope is the least of it. The Sentinelās impact on fandom is totally outsized considering what a minor show it was. But it had a great concept that it did not fully exploit, which I think is in fact, what an amazing fandom needs.
Sidenote: While Jim was indeed a Sentinel, and Blair stayed at it his side and helped him get through a lot of shit - the "sentinal/guide" trope is very much a fandom invention.
They had no mystical soul connection in the show; it was very much "Jim, supercop with magic senses NO WAIT DON'T CALL THEM MAGIC he's just, um, well, we're gonna show a lot of closeups of his face and then show him noticing something that's too far away for him to notice, and then he's gonna go do the Cop Things and Catch Bad Guys In The Act followed by getting shot or kneecapped or whatever, and Blair will patch him up after."
The Sentinel was a buddy-cop show, or cop-and-civilian-sidekick show, with a slight mystical edge (Magic Sensory Enhancement). There was no supposed soulbond between the two guys, and at least one of the actors was unhappy with the fandom notion of them being romantically attached. (I forget which. I was not in this fandom.)
The show was all uploaded to YouTube several years ago, and then taken down for copyright reasons; it's not available anywhere public online now.
yeah, itās inspired by a show and jim and blair are from that show but the S&G centres, guides, bonds, senses ādiallingā, and āthe sentinel and guides are knownā infrastructure was all developed by fans. itās one of the best fanon group projects Iāve ever seen. incredible. and like omegaverse (and many mutations and powers in other fictional universes) is often an interesting discussion of our world and the way it deals with people who are different from the government accepted ādefaultā
"An Orpheus who doesn't look back is an Orpheus that never went looking." I repeat over and over to myself while staring at the ceiling in the middle of the night.
itās amazing how women are able to navigate crowded rooms without ever touching a palm to a manās lower back
itās been said before and itās not even close to the worst thing but it sucks how our current robber barons are such philistines. like these guys arenāt even building libraries or concert halls. they canāt even pretend to enjoy art, and they donāt see any value in signaling that they appreciate art
this current batch of the fithy-rich is BORING. They're BORING. Oh you have a yacht that's bigger than anybody else's yacht but functionally no different from one of your fancy houses? BORING. You have yet another fast car? YAWN. You ate a burger but like, a special burger? whatever. FUND AN OPERA ABOUT ANOTHER RICH GUY YOU HATE, DIPSHITS. How about you put a concert hall with your name on it in every city in the US and fund their operations for the next decade, if you're so rich????? unless you're too poor to afford that????? How many people do you, personally, directly employ, and what are their salaries? Do you pay well enough to command the loyalty and willing service of any masters of their craft? It would be so easy to win the absolute love and adoration of the masses in this climate but no, they wanna build bunkers and play politics in order to save a few more miserable nickles.
@capriceandwhimsy reminds me of your rabbit hole about yachts
anon hater just accused me of (among other things) "encouraging kids to install malware on their parents' computers". I don't remember ever doing that but it sounded like a fun concept for a post so here are some ideas for things to install on your parents' computers!
a custom DNS resolver that blocks access to Fox News and other right-wing propaganda outlets
a keylogger to capture the admin password for your router so you can disable parental controls
a VPN or a virtual machine running the Tor browser to bypass access restrictions and age verification checks
your own "parental controls" browser extension, set up to send you notifications if your parents visit websites that indicate they might be spying on you (e.g. Life360)
a userscript that adds a fake virus warning popup to the donation pages of fascist political parties
have fun! make sure to do loads of reading and learn how things work so you can break them safely and effectively!
oh, and anon, my advice to you is never stab a man who collects knives
right so reportedly we got the karaoke scene in the movie because ryan gosling overheard sandra hüller singing to herself in some downtime on set and approached the directors to say "if we have her here and don't ask her to sing in the movie then we're insane," so the scene was hastily planned and recorded during the last day they had with that set; stratt grew up singing in an east german youth choir because hüller did, too. a fun meta textual wrinkle this adds is that gosling is also a singer but grace doesn't take a turn with the mic, so you can read the scene not just as stratt saying "I am a full human being, I just can't be for this project, you get to see it for two minutes before I turn it off again" but additionally "you could be doing this exact same thing but you aren't even willing to give us two minutes." his doomed work friend the trained choral singer, his fated bestie the being who communicates only through song, his world-saving probes named for the most famous musicians ever, his choir-based soundtrack underpinning all his actions, and his unwillingness to sing himself.
"ryan gosling can sing?" yeah mate! he had a band, la la land was a musical, he had that song in the barbie movie, and I think there was a lot of singing involved in being a mouseketeer but idk I'm ten years too young to have ever seen any of that. I'm quite partial to this clip from lars and the real girl because that is some very good control and support for someone lying on their back with their legs propped up. if you haven't seen the movie then don't even worry about the life sized doll btw she's great she works as a hairdresser.
omnidirectional
i couldnt decide between these two similar ideas i had so you get both LOLLLLLL
Armando wants to know about the Blip-A....
It took me way too long to finish this...
Sometimes I look at what our lives have become, and I cannot comprehend everything we have lost. The home that once brought our family together is gone, our shop that provided us with an income is gone as well, and displacement has taken away our last sense of safety. Today, I watch my father suffer before my eyes while I am unable to afford his treatment, and I have been forced to rely on donations to support my family and keep going
My father suffers from a herniated disc and severe back pain, and he needs surgery that costs around ā¬1,500. It hurts to watch him suffer every day knowing that treatment is available, but we simply cannot afford it. Since June 22, we have raised only ā¬251 out of ā¬1,500, leaving ā¬1,249 still needed. More than a month has passed while I have been asking for help for my father, watching him endure his pain day after day as the amount we raise increases very slowly. It is painful to have to repeat his suffering again and again while so many people see these appeals and nothing changes
Please, do not pass by this appeal without helping. Even a small donation of ā¬10 or ā¬20 could bring my father closer to the surgery he needs. Ignoring his suffering will not stop his pain, but your help could make a real difference

Project Hail Mary (as in the actual one) is a race against time
The first thing Rocky and Grace show eachother is a clock
Grace only had so much time before starving to death on the way to Erid
