It was a simple way to phrase it, what they’d been through in all their time apart, but so Mike that it caused her heart to squeeze happily. “I missed you, too” El replied easily, her fingers ITCHING to reach up and brush some of that long dark hair off his face. To repeat the words she’d said to him just before the truck pulled away, to FINALLY have him look her in the eyes and say it back. But it had been a long time, and she didn’t know what Mike was hoping would happen between them on his visit. “... A LOT.”

It was the ONLY word El could think to say. To repeat endlessly until it lost its meaning, to cling to as if it were the last lifeline in an undulating ocean of agony. The only one that didn’t open the gaping hole in her chest any wider, didn’t lend any weight to the horrific truth she saw reflected in Joyce’s wet eyes. It was one of the first words she’d ever learned, even if it wasn’t until life with Hopper that she’d felt safe enough to actually USE it. To push back without wondering when she’d be tossed into a windowless cell for her disobedience, to begin to define herself when other people tried to do that for her. He’d once teased her that it must be one of her FAVORITE words, and that each and every time she used it he gained a new grey hair. He’d laugh. She’d laugh. 

No. No, no, no...

This was all HER fault. She should’ve gone with him, ignored what he’d said about keeping her safe while she recharged her batteries. Clearly he’d needed her down there, like he had last year, and she hadn’t been there. She’d let him go down there KNOWING he’d need her, deciding to trust those murmured reassurances and gentle smiles over her own gut. And now ... now she’d never get to see any of it again. Never get to hear those teasing lectures, or split an eggo waffle tower on a Sunday morning. Never see his truck pull up outside just in time for their favorite Friday night shows, or hear his booming laugh when she successfully made a joke. He was ... Hopper was ...

“No... No, no, NO!” El screamed, shaking hands flying over her face as her legs gave out from underneath her and she collapsed to the ground. Firemen and agents ran all around her, no one paying any attention to the teenager on the pavement amidst the chaos of the mall’s collapse. The stinging pain in El’s leg feeling like nothing more than a scratch compared to the AGONY that tore through her heart. A horrific tightening and crumbling sensation stopped her from breathing, that shook her entire body. She hadn’t thought it was possible to feel more LOSS than she already had tonight but ... this? There were no words for this; a pain so complete that El swore she’d die, right here and now alone on the parking lot cement.

A lot of things about living in the REAL world had felt like a fairytale to Eleven, considering how cold and clinical her whole life had been before now. Never having to look over her shoulder for white vans or long-toothed monsters, able to learn simple things like how to ride a bike or swim. Watching television and seeing events all over the world whenever she wanted, attending school dances in a fancy dress with the guy of her dreams - even just hanging out with the Party in the basement felt like a LUXURY, like the happily ever after she always read (slowly) about in her (admittedly for much younger audiences) books. 

What else could she possibly want in the world? She had a HOME, somewhere she felt safe and loved at the end of the day. She had FRIENDS, people she trusted with her life and knew would never judge her for asking questions or needing help with basic tasks. And she had MIKE - the boy she’d spent 353 days fighting to get back to, who filled her every waking thought and whose smile she swore was brighter than the sun. Everything was finally EASY, leaving a smile on her face when her head hit the pillow at night that was still there when she woke up every morning. 

But nothing compared to this - the SUMMER CARNIVAL that had arrived in Hawkins like a tornado of flashing lights and bright colors. At first she’d been a little bit skeptical about it, never having seen machines of that kind of scale or speed in her life. But all it had taken was some encouragement from Max and the reassurance of Mike’s hand threaded through hers to convince El to give the place a chance; and thank GOD she had. Between the amazing fried food that she was wolfing down like her stomach had no bottom and the fuzzy pink bear tucked under her arm (that she may have used her powers to help Mike win for her), El couldn’t remember the last time she’d had so much FUN.

... Of course, fun wasn’t the only thing she was interested in. Time with the rest of the party was always a blast, but El would be lying if she said she HADN’T been looking forward to this the most - a ride on the ferris wheel with Mike. Just the two of them, finally alone after spending all afternoon and evening with their friends. Seated closely together, El squeezed Mike’s hand in hers and released a sigh of utter BLISS. “It’s so ... clear up here.” she commented, her English lightyears better than it had been when they met. No doubt improved from lovingly listen to her verbose boyfriend talk so much. “... And beautiful.”
