In the Gylfaginning it describes Odin as the highest god of the Aesir, describing him as a son of Bestla and Borr and brother of Vili and VĂŠ. Along with his brothers, he slayed Ymir and made Earth from the giants body. âViliâ is the Proto Germanic word for âwillâ (English), âVĂŠâ is the Germanic word for woe or the more archaic Germanic word âWeiâ meaning âsacredâ. From Ymirâs flesh, Odin and his brothers made the earth. From Ymirâs bones and teeth they made the rocks and stones. From the giantâs blood, they made the rivers and lakes. Ymirâs skull was made into the sky, and then secured at four points by four dwarfs named for the cardinal directions East, West, North, and South. From Ymirâs brains, the three Gods shaped the clouds, whereas Ymirâs eyebrows became a barrier between Jotunheim (giantâs home) and Midgard. Odin and his brothers are also attributed with making humans. After having made earth from Ymirâs flesh, the three brothers came across two trees, commonly referred to as an ash and an elm. Odin gave them breath and life; Vili gave them brains and feelings; and Ve gave them hearing and sight. The first man was Ask and the first woman was Embla.
