not sure if this is meta enough, maybe we could go deeper, but in honor of singular tastemaker Dave Meltzer beefing with wrestling historians on twitter, I want to link Jim Emerson annotating an interview with David Carr and AO Scott on the nature of arts criticism. I am Thinking about this in relation to pro wrestling culture wrt criticism and where we need to go from here. I don't agree with AO Scott on everything, nor do I need to, but he knows his role & resents people acting like he's doing something else. Critics are not supposed to be treated as objective, just informative.

the line, “you’re going to have to find something else to do” is a callback to an interview Hangman did with Jim Ross in 2019, where, if you can see in the thumbnail, he is wearing the same black suit jacket and a white shirt.

the person who said these words to Hangman was his father, and it was during an anecdote about how his father told him he wasn’t going to stay in the tobacco business like the rest of his family. that he was going to have to find something else to do. it is another reference to Hangman’s new beginning.

a reminder that this was also right before his match against Chris Jericho at All Out to become the inaugural AEW men’s world champion. months after he made the promise at the press conference that he would become the first world champion. it is a promise that he ultimately did not keep.
