We should watch
Writing advice you're not going to like.
People sometimes send me Asks wanting writing advice. Ā I suck at it. Ā I donāt really know how I do the writing, or how one should do the writing, or what one should do to get better at the writing. Ā All I can ever think to say is āwrite a lot of stuff and you will get better at the writing.ā Ā Which is true, but hardly a bolt from the sky.
Well, as it turns out, I do have one piece of Legit Writing Advice, and I am going to share it with you, right now. Ā If you were in any of my writing workshop groups at a con, youāve heard this advice already.
Warning: youāre going to fucking hate it. Ā But if you do it, you will thank me.
If you have a piece of fiction youāre serious about, something you might want to actually shop around, or just something you really are into and want to make it as good as you canā¦do NOT edit it.
Repeat. Ā DO NOT EDIT.
REWRITE.
As in, print out the whole fucking thing and re-enter it, every word (or use two screens). Ā Retype the whole thing. Ā Recreate it from the ground up using your first draft as a template. Ā Start with a blank page and re-enter every. single. word.
I hear you screaming. Ā OH MY GOD THATāS INSANE.
Yes. Ā Yes, it is.
It is also the most powerful thing you will ever do for a piece of fiction that you are serious about.
Now, letās get real. Ā I donāt do this for most things. Ā I donāt do it for my fanfiction. Ā But if itās something original, something I might like to get to a professional level - I do it. Ā You absolutely COULD do it for fanfiction. Ā Itās just up to you and how much time you want to sink into a piece.
You can edit, sure. Ā But you WILL NOT get down to the level of change that needs to happen in a second draft. Ā You will let things slide. Ā Your eyes will miss things. Ā You will say āeh, good enough.ā
The first time I did this, on someone elseās advice, I was dubious. Ā Within two pages, I was saying WHY HAVE I NOT BEEN DOING THIS ALL THE TIME. Ā I was amazed at how much change was happening. Ā By the time I got to the end, I had an entirely different novel than the one Iād started with. Ā When youāre already re-entering every single word, itās easy to make deep changes. Ā Youāll reformat sentences, youāll switch phrases around, youāll massage your word choice. Ā Youāll discover whole paragraphs that donāt need to be there at all because they became redundant. Ā Youāll find dialogue exchanges that need reimagining. Ā Whole plot points will suddenly be different, whole story arcs will reveal their flaws and get re-drawn.
You cannot get down to the fundamental level of change thatās required just by editing an existing document. Ā You have to rebuild it if you really want your story to evolve. Ā You will be AMAZED at the difference it will make.
It will take time. Ā It will seem like a huge, Herculean task. Ā Iām not saying itās easy. Ā It isnāt. Ā But it is absolutely revolutionary.
Try it. Ā I promise, you will see what I mean.
*PSA: Tipsy!Lori wrote this post. Ā In case you couldnāt tell.
maybe i should try this with my comic scripts.
This advice is real.
I reblogged this earlier on kind of aĀ āthat sounds interesting. might work, might not, canāt see it being drastically different but whatever I should try.ā kind of note
Iāve got a short story due today at 5, so I decided to do this and completely rewrite the first draft.
OH. MY GOD.
This is legitimate. Itās let me completely gut scenes I was unhappy with, rewrite them entirely differently and not feel any loyalty to what I used to have.
Itās taking a long time. Itās a commitment. But heck so is writing.
This is great. Do this. Itās amazing.
This is such good advice. Iāve done it a few times, and it completely transforms your work. Itās a time consuming process, but itās absolutely worth the investment. I highly recommend this on things you truly care about. Itās incredible.
I was going to be like āthis is ridiculous, what an unreasonable standardā and then go off in a huff to work on an article, and then I remembered that the way I write articles now is by doing an audio draft, and then basically rewriting the article entirely while listening to the audio draft⦠so⦠yeah. This is probably actually really good advice. >_>
This sucks. It really does. Iāve done it. However, it is so powerful. By going back through your writing and rewriting it word for word, you pick up on small things that you may have missed before.

my mom has a friend who has a failed program-service dog and heās literally my favorite creature
Heās a really smart lab, he learned all the commands, but he just has an affinity for doing them whenever he wants
So this ladyās dog literally turns on-off lights, opens doors, opens the fridge, etc⦠at his own wishes.
Her house looks like its baby-proofed, with kid safe locks on everything and stuff, but really she just has a dog thatās learned all the mobility service dog commands but has a mind of his own.

Why Adventure Time is a Groundbreaking show in Animation
If you are familiar with modern cartoons from this decade, starting from 2010 and currently, chances are youāve come across a show called āAdventure Timeā.
Adventure Time is a show about the adventures of a boy named āFinnā with his dog āJakeā that has magical powers to shape-shift at anytime!
The show takes place in the āLand of Oooā, which is set in a post-apocalyptic future where humans are near to extinction and Finn is believed to be the last human.
As the show has progressed throughout its 8 seasons, almost near its end with a ninth and final season, we have learned a lot of back-story and history about the origin of Ooo and various characters.
Here is where I think this show was a huge game-changer for Cartoon Network and animated shows, in general!
If we go back to 2007 and on another channel being āNickelodeon, Adventure Timeās creator, Pendleton Ward created a 7 minute pilot simply titled āAdventure Timeā that was just a basic premise of Finn and Jake rescuing Princess Bubblegum from the villainous Ice King.
The pilot then later became viral over the Internet and became a huge success, where Frederator Studios pitched the pilot as a series to Nickelodeon, but they passed on the series twice!
Later on, the studio pitched the series to Cartoon Network and they allowed them to make a whole show, if it meant to keep all of the elements and characters from the pilot.
And then from then on, the show and the creators have expanded upon the pilot and have created a huge and impactful series that have influenced a wide range of creators, academics, gender and orientation!
People have described the show as being trippy, bizarre and silly on the outside, but on the inside, the show can get dark, thoughtful and even makes you question about philosophy, life and the world, in general.
A great example of this show that has led a lot of underground and freelance artists to pursue their own projects is people like Rebecca Sugar for creating Steven Universe, Patrick McHale for creating Over the Garden Wall and Skyler Page for creating Clarence!
Itās not to say that artists were limited to just shows, as well! Many writers were previously independent comic artists including Jesse Moynihan, Seo Kim, Tom Herpich and Steve Wolfhard, just to name a few! Here is an example of Jesse Moynihanās work calledĀ āFormingā!
Lastly, Adventure Timeās impact on gender and orientation comes from how there is a diverse mix of characters! BMO, for example switches genders back and forth depending on certain episodes! There are also some episodes that feature a gender-swapped world of the show which are called āFionna and Cakeā and these episodes tend to be favourites among the fandom!
Characters like Princess Bubblegum, Marceline and Susan Strong are all shown to be tough characters, but deal with their own sets of flaws and insecurities.
Fans of the show often pair PB and Marceline as a ship called āBubblineā, as itās believed that they have been in a past relationship and are trying to work out their problems as the show progresses.
There are many various examples of topics that the show that the series represents like loss and memory disorders in āI Remember Youā, sexuality and depression in āBreezyā or isolation in āThe Music Holeā and thatās just only a few to list.
This episode is considered one of the most saddest in the entire series, thanks to Rebecca Sugarās amazing song-writing!
What I always admire about the series is that not only has it been consistently strong over the course of 8 seasons, but the show actually has their characters age and grow physically and mentally in real-time.
Season 1 may be considered the most juvenile of the series, whereas the most recent seasons, especially Season 6 and 7 are some of the most poignant and philosophical the show has seen yet and for the better, in my opinion!
Adventure Time has remained and still is widely considered a ground-breaking show in the history of television animation and pushed the boundaries of what could be shown on a kidās network, similar to Avatar: The Last Airbender did for Nickelodeon, but thatās another topic for another day!
I will miss Adventure Time when it comes to a close, but what will remain is a modern classic in the history of animation and we will always have fun going on adventures with Finn the Human and Jake the Dog!
