AAA forgot to post it on here, happy birthday Ninjago!! Thank you for giving me one of the most memorable seasons from a show :^)
I've talked before about how Lloyd has a very strong fear of abandonment early on in the show (by now, pretty much all of the characters have it, but I think it primarily belongs to Nya and Lloyd throughout S1-3) but I think his deepest fear is this all encompassing terror of being alone.
It is most evident in the S2 finale, when his panic increases as the ninja are taken out by Dark Matter. Lloyd constantly says that he can't beat the Overlord on his own, and even though he is able of winning the battle without his friends, I think that's stuck with him.
Of course, it probably roots back to being abandoned at Darkley's and growing up alone, ostracized by his classmates. And I'm sure his captivity with the Serpentine didn't help.
But Season 3 gives us even more of Lloyd's fear. When he is captured by Pythor in e4, he tells his dad that he can't do it alone. All throughout the scene in e5 where his power is being drained, the Overlord chooses to target that fear to weaken him further, reminding him that there is no one who can save him, no one around who cares.
The only way Lloyd is able to keep up his strength is by repeating over and over, "I am not alone." He has to say it over and over because this child relies so heavily on his friends, and without them, he doesn't have the strength to keep going.
Obviously this is more important later in seasons 4 and especially 5, but I really love this trait of Lloyd in the older seasons. Yes, he is the Green Ninja, the Chosen One, the prophesied savior with Golden Power and destiny on his side. But he is also the most endangered character for three seasons running, the person targeted by villain after villain for his power. And against all of those villains, Lloyd is not enough to defeat them. It is only because of his friends and his father that he survives. I personally find this to be such a fun twist on the Chosen One trope- yes he is all powerful but he is also completely helpless and all of the other characters would defend him with their lives.
Part of me wishes they kept this fear more central to Lloyd's character in later seasons. Obviously he still loves his friends after S7, but it's not quite as crushing when they are gone, not like he completely relies on their presence to function properly. The other part of me is grateful that he has been able to face that fear, and even if he doesn't prefer to be alone, it doesn't lead to a whole crash out either. He grew up. He's not a kid anymore, and maybe that's what really breaks me.
