₊˚⊹⋆ gather and hear the ballad of HIGH LADY CLYTEMNESTRA TAELON of the WINTER COURT and PRINCE ROMAN RUNEHART of HYBERN and AMBASSADOR ICARIAN FEYWIN of the SPRING COURT ⋆
for the glory of prythian, as penned by jo (she/her).
"You're enjoying this far too much..." she commented with a roll of her eyes, thanking him for the drink. Beyond the grandeur of Velaris, Hybern and its representatives were the quiet talk of the night. As many in the room tried to refrain from passing glances and sharing whispers as the Runeharts mingled throughout the room, they couldn't help themselves. Why Hybern was such an anomaly to the courts amused Nyssira more than anything else tonight. However, it didn't change the fact that things were changing and would change. Not simply for the state of Prythian as a whole, but where she landed on this quickly evolving game board.
"I'm sorry, were you expecting me to oggle at you like those dainty faes gathered in the corner? Not I, Prince Runehart," she drawled, over-enunciating his name.
he grins - "i would hold far less affection for you if you did, commander valcoren." roman liked the coldness. the cool, careful temperature the room took when he orbited nyssira, a sun gravitating just out of a summer distance. the reluctant affection. he liked drawing quiet expressions from her when the day was done, private smiles and kisses.
his goblet rises to his lips, hovering over them as he speaks, hiding his words from the admirers across the room, "they wished my company was theirs, and yet! i desire only you. we are at an impasse." roman takes a sip of his drink. "it would be rude not to indulge in the festivities - night has been so gracious to us, after all. forgive me for the circus."
having sent their children in their stead , sena wondered if the future of hybern truly cared for the treaty as the king and queen seemed to . she doubted it , thinking that the princesses and prince might not have agreed with the treaty , but were unable to go against the wishes of their parents . it was hard to say and she doubted they would share their true feelings on the matter , likely raised to keep decorum while in the night court . " i am simply trying to ensure we are being good hosts , your highness . " roman exudes charm and class but it makes the lady wonder how much of it is all a front , most of it probably if she had to guess . the prince takes her hand and sena stops herself from pulling back , " i suppose there is enough time for one dance , if that is what you wish . " though she would not say , dancing was not something she usually inclined to .
roman pondered the possibility of the night court's pockets, lined and padded by his parents' whim - what else would motivate the court to support hybern so wholeheartedly? why else would they reveal this secret city? the goodness of their hearts? doubtful. his point of reference was the night court's depravity hidden in its hewn city. there was no good there, he was told. "you are the portrait of xenia, lady-commander." the prince bows in a gentlemanly fashion, swallowing the dirtiness of his first instinct, pressing his lips to the pink of her knuckles. she was careful. guarded. "it is," roman insists, "one dance and i shall praise you to each fae i met afterwards."

"There you are." Ashriel's voice cut through the shadows, velvet-smooth and unmistakably amused, but there was a hunger tucked into the edges. A starved anticipation thrummed beneath his practiced confidence. He couldn't shimmer into the room, no blinding light or sudden spectacle this time. The Night Court's darkness refused him that pleasure, forcing him to walk among the crowds without his usual tricks.
Still, he managed to carve brilliance from shadow even now. His open blouse revealing every sharp line and curve of his chest, moonlight swirling over skin adorned with courtly flowers. His gaze fixed only on Clytemnestra. Every slow, deliberate step closed the distance with the care of a predator stalking across dusk.
"I've been looking for you." He murmured, voice as soft as midnight secrets, gaze glinting with an unyielding, playful challenge that turned scorching as he studied her. Ashriel titled his head, a lock of raven hair falling into his eyes, mouth curled into a roguish smile designed to make caution flee.
"Did you miss me?" One hand reached up, fingers halting just before her jaw, the scent of those court flowers lingering in the air as he leaned closer.
it is akin to being lit aflame - the homeland hearth within her becomes a blaze when around the spring fae. she is gorged on kindling, full of nothing but him and him and him. around him, all rational thinking leaves her.
how special one feels when they feel loved by someone exceptional.
“here i am,” she hums serenely, meeting him half way, tugged into his orbit by a voice as gentle as the dew drops against the spring grass.
her betrothed has always been beautiful, but it was even more overwhelming up close. it was the kind of beauty that left you breathless, reminding you what it meant to be a girl and in love for the first time. looking at ashriel was like looking into the sun - the residual brilliance scarred into your eyelids, seeing nothing but that brightness when you blink your eyes.
so, clem often does look at him, welcoming that all consuming presence to take her. she counts her blessings, thanking the mother that he wishes to be with her. that she should have him for the rest of time when so many love him too.
she smiles sweetly, faltering not even against the ghost trace of his finger to bone - standing so still that he might come to her still, petting her cheek. "of course i did, my love. if i should be in your presence daily, i would be happy then."
never considering that anything should be amiss between them, out of pure curiousity, she prompts, “where have you been?” a high lady, but also a bug. a fly unknowingly stuck within a venus’ gaping jaw.
" your choice in words is amusing , " yoonah lightly chuckles, almost imperceptible save for her sister's ears . on the outside though nothing in her features shows that amusement , gaze as icy as usual . her dark eyes take in the scene around them , so many fae in one place and when was the last time the high rulers of prythian had been gathered like this she wondered . not that she could remember and she couldn't shake the feeling that something more might come then a simple treaty signing . yoonah turns her gaze to her sister , trailing over the beautiful dress . " nonsense , there is no need to change . that dress fits here perfectly and looks stunning on you . " the words are sincere as she speaks them , before looking down at her own icy blue dress . " it's okay to be nervous , clem . but we'll get through this together . "
the high lady sighs, "and i do try to my best to amuse you, sister. i consider it to be one of my greatest missions in life." the sisters were of two kinds of winter. it was not winter, after all, without the snow. you could not cozy under a blanket without a chill. you lit the flame because of the ice in the air. each was necessary, both were needed. yoonah was the solid ice of the frozen lake, allowing clem to skate.
she chokes down a strangled noise. "fine. if you say so." there were moments in which clem grew strangely shy - unwillingly to play into the public circus of courtly politics. perhaps it stemmed from her personal apprehension on this treaty, signing it against her better judgement. "it must be my uneasiness over the complacency. i feel as if i let myself be swayed too easily."
Aelin had been prepping for all the conversational topics she may have tonight in her quarters, knowing most would focus on her positioning with the treaty. Her desire tonight is to sense the temperature. With the best that Night Court has to offer, she was sure the truth would inevitably make its way out tonight with the libations endlessly flowing. As she exited and made her way through the corridors to check on those from Spring who attended this trip, she smiled as she saw the vibrant ambassador, Aelin, whom she secretly adored. "Rian," she said with a curt nod. "You look lovely as always. All okay?"
rian laughs, pleased by the compliment from the springtime high lady. "oh, that is too kind of you to say, lady aelin!" she'd been especially pleased by her personal wardrobe selection this afternoon - debating between a peach and a plum, before settling on a raspberry number and pairing it with layers upon layers of jewels. of course, whatever icarian had haphazard together was no where as stunning at the spring lady. the emissary often aspired to have that same impeccable fashion as she, but icarian was unable to veer aware from the eclectic. "all is indeed okay!" however, she was unaware of what the night would bring, unaware of how easily a smile could be wiped from her features. "i only wanted to confirm - am i to be nice to the hybern delegates?" rian didn't think it within her capabilities to be cruel, but she was a young lady, and young ladies were so apt at unknowingly committing such sins. "what if they are not nice to us?"

" do you imagine anyone is so understanding they aren't annoyed this secret was kept ? " carden's voice begins when he hears the door open to the sitting room he'd taken up residence in. the dawn emissary was situated with his back to the door, wings folded tightly behind him they could be mistaken for a plush blanket or pillow. his eyes didn't move from the window they'd been fixed on, gaze taking in the sparkling stars he could safely say he'd never before seen shine so bright.
the springtime emissary enters first, her pristinely groomed feathered wings following afterwards - looking for a place to perch. it seems rude not to announce herself when interrupting a conversation, so, unwisely, rian chimes in, "is that how we are expected to feel?" this is news to her. the partial peregryn was more excited to experience the night court for the first time at all than to complain about what she did or did not know. "annoyed?"

to put it plainly , ezra was bored. social gatherings like this , mingling and pleasantries exchanged but that seemed to be the most of it . when would things actually get interesting , was it really supposed to just all go off without a hitch ? he highly doubted it , but the night was young so to speak and if anything he was going to enjoy the free drinks as long as they were available . bringing the glass to his lips , he tilts his head when another steps close . " honestly , i expected something exciting to happen by now , but at least the drinks are flowing . "
the springtime emissary tries not to allow the handful of drinks she's indulged in to possess her, but her head already feels like bubbles and bad choices. her mouth tastes bitter. the folly of youth. "perhaps they've already thwarted the excitement," rian points out with a giggle. brain half-way there to putting together a modicum of concern. "have you seen the hybern delegation at all in the last hour? i haven't laid eyes on them since!"
her curiousity is so bright and unguarded, so unlike the veiled caution he is used to. fascinating. “the night court,” he begins slowly, voice low and even, “wraps itself in starlight and power. we share the quiet with them — the half-light, the hour when the world shifts. but where night thrives in mystery, we are the pause between day and night, beginnings and endings both.” the shadows stir at his words, thin tendrils brushing along the floor. he blinks once, slowly, eyes fixed not on her but somewhere just beyond her shoulder, as though seeing something invisible.
"your seasonal courts...what are they like?"
she tries to imagine this - a state of eternal transition, with changing seasons under a half-way sky. "we differ so greatly," rian confesses, as if this is some shortcoming on her own part. the fae had never once left the spring, even despite her peregryn heritage. "i can only speak to spring, to which..." in truth, she'd barely even left the courtly side of springtime - so any portrait would be incomplete. she considers her home with some thoughtfulness, plucking the correct words from the air. "spring is warm. it grows cool when it rains - and it rains often. our flowers are always in bloom, for it is always the season for pollen. we are the miracle of life." she represented the spring court with a great pride, truly loving the place that was her home. "it is a lovely place. you must visit us, my liege."
FOR NYSSIRA ( @sweetbriarfm )
the air is filled with warmth and raucous laughter, cheers around long tables as the court fae craft camaraderie before their eyes. it is a show of unity, of pride, of we are of community and you are not - leaving a quiet pocket for the hybern party, allowing roman and the commander their privacy.
he returns to their seats, two goblets in hand, placing the first in front of the fae. "don't look so glum, nyssira," gently roman teases. bravado gone, and stripped down to the cheekiness of familiarity. coming low to the arch of her ear, he hums fondly, "did you miss me so? i was only gone for a moment."
FOR NIAMH ( @ofdcylight )
yes, roman decides, she will do. is she fun, or is she only vehicle to ruin the night? ah, they will find out. they speak for what feels like hours. ages. centuries. roman listening with his arched ears perked, offering the younger fae his undivided attention - fighting off his curiousity of nyssira's whereabouts, or what the fae next to them are shouting about.
he rests his head upon his cheek, peering into the deep brown of the daylight fae's eyes. "would you like to join me outside, my lady?"
FOR SOLEIRA ( @inf1ntefates )
"do we have to?" roman attempts one last time, pleading with his sister with round eyes knowing that he was only a moment away from frustration. he's restless, a telling sign. ghosts of the child he'd been, round faced, on the verge of kicking and screaming when things did not go his way. it was terribly childish to taunt them with memory of his tantrums, vision displaced when watching the pair of royals, head to toe in finery. he was better at getting what he wanted, no less better at disappointment. "this is stupid, sol. so stupid."

" i am not wearing a tiara. " declares the hybern fae as she lays on the bed. taria had never been the type, and in truth, the only reason they were even brought is because their mother had ordered them packed. princess in title, future ruler in succession, but by no means what one pictured when the word came to mind. she already hated being here in her parent's stead, with their inner circle to baby sit her, taria could barely consider the thought of adorning herself with a tiara and ball gown. " nor a dress. they shall have me in pants unless mother left my gowns alone. " favoring sheer designs or anything tight – though their mother often swapped those for something more traditional.
spidery legs hang off the edge of the bed, roman laying amongst the number of plush down cushions provided the night court estate. the prince was bored ( as he so often was ), barely glancing at the garish ballgown brought for his sister. it was a fine set of silks for a lady, but it was of wildly known fact that the crown princess had a moral objection to dress. so much so, "you know, before we left, mother suggested i cut your trousers into little stars of confetti - she thought it might slim down your wardrobe choices."

of all those in attendance within her home here in velaris , there was no court in particular that she was keeping an eye on , but instead the royals and their retinue from hybern . while she did not doubt her brother's intentions or his ambitions , she still remained cautious . perhaps she looked at the glass half empty , but in giving up the jewel of their home to be known by all , she would ensure that nothing threatened to harm it . her eyes fall upon the youngest runehart , she knew that her brother had likely already been making his rounds , no doubt having already spoke with the royal family , but she was simply ensuring their hospitality was being enjoyed after all . " your highness , i hope you have settled in well ? " she says as she approaches , " is there anything you and your family require , do not hesitate to let us know . "
sena was right to keep a careful eye trained on the runeharts. although sent by their parents' genuine goodwill, it was a mission that the siblings had no interest in. why should they treatise with these courts and their judgements? seelie and unseelie - categorizing them into the very definition of black and white. "very generous of you," says the prince, all charm and smiles - any sign of his disdain evaporated into the air, hidden from sight. with his courtly upbringing, he extends a hand, reaching for the delicate arch of her palm so he might seal his greetings to one of the night court's beautiful daughters. "i am always partial to a dance, my lady. would you and your minstrels indulge me?"
FOR ROMAN / @protagoniam trophy room? weapons room? somewhere they shouldn't be.
the night sings its tune, and the breeze envelops her quiet steps. there's nothing like a time like this; when the sun is long gone, and the glitter in the sky stretches itself above them, not so nightmarish, after all. ceren has no set direction as she makes her way down the hallways, gently holding the glass of wine that is already more than half empty.
would it be too hopeful to expect the night to go smoothly, with nothing really to disturb them? like fortune being foretold, good omens, only, she snorts at her own thoughts, but quickly stops briefly. the light bleeds through the crack, the lead someone mistakenly left behind.
" can i help you find your way back? " her tone is even the tone not as brisk as it could have been, and the smile upon her face unfurls slowly, way too gentle. " this room is off limits," she leaned against the door, closing it behind her. " but i understand it's easy to get lost around here. "
it's difficult not to look incriminating. after all, he is committing crime. but, roman had no guilt in playing fawn. “my apologies,” the prince smiles, hands presented outward — the goodwill of empty palms.
the rest of his gifts lay under the rug. a series of sprite bombs set to detonate when triggered by the slightest pressure — say the minor weight of a high lord as they walked their path to their prized bow, or what else have you. while he did not know the high ruler well enough personally, he could make an assumption of the court’s favourites based on the wear and tear amongst the handles of on some of these weapons.
“i was lost,” he offers in explanation. "i was only looking for your powder room, but found myself taking a wrong turn."

High Lady, Clymtemnestra Taelon (@protagoniam) | Velaris Treaty Signing
While the temperature was still relatively calm, Aelin wanted to take the opportunity to connect with her fellow High Ruler. A healthy relationship existed between the two courts. Fostered long before her rule, Aelin wanted to make sure that the thread did not unravel by any means. Matters were a bit more complicated with a looming nuptials in the future between her brother and Clytemnestra; relations between them needed to remain intact.
Finding a quiet moment in between all the discovery and intrigue of Velaris, Aelin found the Winter High Lady in the empty common area reserved for them. "Clytemnestra," Aelin greeted them by name as she sat across from them on the antique furniture. "Did you wake up content with your decision yesterday? Personally, I'm not sure what to think of all of this," she said letting out a small sigh. "I hope we're not wrong."
clemmie grins at the sight of his sister - in - law, pleased to see her ( even despite the harsh consonances of her full name on her lips ). "good night, aelin," clem laughs - feeling quite clever with all her jokes. she was on fire with them. something about the night air inspiring her, or simply just the excitement of being around so many fae. even with so many of them being ... from ... hybern.
the winter high lady sighs in turn, "you know i am not usually so stubborn against these things." with this, she had pointedly avoided any conflict when clem found that she truly disagreed - dodging any and all talks in attempt to get discuss the treaty. the history between hybern and prythian was a long one - a teetering see-saw of back and forth, hot and cold. one would think clem to be the first to be on board with the matter - volunteering the winter court as host grounds, but she couldn't help but feel like it this would swiftly prove to be a mistake. give them a decade and they would fall back to their old ways. but, "feyzi is persuasive. i have a hard time saying no to him, unfortunately."
