a woman who had her nose buried in her books or her makeshift lab, her appearances were never the forefront of her concerns, despite the expectations placed upon a zarathin lady of looking nothing less than perfect. while reila was the shield between her younger sister and their mother, sol still knew better than to displease the matriarch. in fact, she did the very opposite, every step taken with precision, in hopes that her elder sister would not have to bear the burnt of her sister's mistakes. wishing that she can make things just a bit easier for reila - how much she succeeded she truly didn't know. over the years, solara had found a way to deal with their mother, as all she wanted was for her elder sister to cease worrying for her younger one. knowing reila, that was an impossible feat. the blond was a grown woman now, she didn't wish for her sister to carry the burden of always needing to protect her. it was solara's turn now to do what reila had for her all this time. after all that this realm had seen and they had experienced, there appeared to be newfound confidence in the lightsinger, her patience for their mother hanging by a thread, were she to trouble reila again, it would be solara who bite back. things had changed in the past six months, and with it so had one aspect of her life as kai once appears in her orbit. she grew to care as to how she looked, and each time she's in his presence, all of the emotions she has buried come rising to the surface for him. the prickle of fear still nestled within her strong, of what her desire to be near him would be perceived as. kai knew her mother, and enough to know what their former betrothal was for, it was that he was too gracious to ever utter the words to her or make sol feel lesser. except she always carried guilt, for being tied to her, until he wasn't. reconnecting with him in gaea and dusk had been a surprise and that only left her aching for him, she didn't understand it, not entirely, only that when she heard he'd become high lord - it made even him entirely out of reach to her. it was a silly thought to begin with, as if she has any claim to him. once she had feared marriage, but marriage with him would not have been bad, not when he'd been nothing but kind to her. sol was simply torn being pleased for his rise to power, and being disappointed, and then guilt of such dark thoughts. gradual sparks of hope blooms, when he came to spring often and each time he did, he sent her an invite. to her delight, it seems he had not forgotten her or the time they spent in the other courts, yet that was what left her emotions a mess.
it was maddening, truly, this state of unknowing, and hoping that perhaps kai did like her, far more than a friend. if she were to look back on every occasion he flirted with her, complimenting her, and sol wasn't entirely oblivious, it was just that she feared reaching for him any further then he allows. she feared making a fool of herself or misreading his kindness and graciousness into something more. even if she lingers on his flirting, which she felt a bit too...intimate to be just seen as friendly. her state of mind was not at all helped by the fact that her mother continued to pressure her to remain in his good graces, what her mother suggested was far more inappropriate, but solara wasn't entertaining seducing kai. sol was no seductress, even then, she could never in good conscious do that to him, she'd sooner remove herself from his life than hurt him in any way. it was always a surge of anger that consumed her - always left with such a crippling feeling. solara wanted him, but the day he learned what her mother plans, would he want anything to do with her then? it was the same internal war, and some days she felt as it would tear her into pieces. other days, she was plagued with the thoughts of stay out of his way, as if she could shield him from the dark workings of her mother's twisted mind. of course she knew, her mother had no say in what kai did, he was a high ruler, he would marry who he wishes, she tries not to linger on the thought of him with another. solara places those thoughts aside, and when his invitation arrived once more for tea, she spent a good thirty minutes fussing over which dress to wear. she opted for a gown that was the color of deep storm clouds that complimented her eyes, allowing her blond curls to flow freely but still neatly. satisfied with how she appeared, sol made her way to the east gardens, all while attempting to calm her racing heart. she arrives a second after he has by their neatly set table, as if sensing her, kai turns, and once more the lightsinger could only pause to simply take him in. any chance she has of gaining control of her singing heart also falls wayside at his compliment. this hadn't been the first he uttered that word to her. she prays her face was not coloring as offers him a bright, and tender smile, out of her nervousness she also curtsied a bit. "good afternoon to you, my lord." she nearly winces internally, though her tone was not formal, she doesn't know why she addresses him as such. "you look quite handsome yourself. that shade becomes you." he was dressed in his signature jeweled color of autumn, this time with added embellishments that tied with his position, and that somehow made his striking features even more prominent, and the desire to reach out and trace his features with her hand, to know what it felt like under her palms. solara finally gathers the nerve to take a few steps closer, leaving enough space between them. "i hope your journey to spring was without trouble." still, solara cannot help but wonder did he come here for diplomatic purposes, or did he come here specifically for her?
kai was well versed in who the zarathin family were, who the matriarch was and how horrid a person. the list of those the high lord avoided was incredibly small, and yet she found herself at the top of the list most days. eager to pawn her daughter off to the highest bidder, any daughter, she had attempted more than once to sink her claws into the lord. kai was no stranger to those that attempted to woo him into marriage with their children or relations – or even themselves – but something about the zarathin matriarch really set the high lord off. perhaps it was the genuine interest he held in solara, the crush he had as a boy, or the feeling he got each time their paths crossed… but he wasn't smart enough to think too deeply on any of that. many may think that a broken betrothal would put the two at odd ends, but kai couldn't help but care less. he always made a point to be on his best charming behavior with the blonde, and each blush he was rewarded with made it all the sweeter. something was growing there, and it meant the high lord knew well that he could not avoid solara's mother forever… a man could dream. and dream he certainly did, of a beautiful blonde spring fae with a smile that simply made him focus on nothing else. kai knew he was more than smitten with the lady, but the autumn fae did everything he could to hide that and appear just his charming self. rumors swelled far too often, whispers circling the masses when one merely smiled at another. he didn't care often, but in this case, kai wished to maintain his privacy.
but in doing so, he worried about how it came off to sol. it's why kai wanted to see her again – among many reasons – because the lord could not play coy for long. he needed to understand how solara felt about him, regardless of her mother's desires. the high lord was well aware that his actions thus far had been mysterious at best, ambiguous even if he thought she might catch on. but kai flirted with everyone, even if he had a favorite, he feared his quest to maintain some privacy meant he also left much to be desired from by the creature his desires remained in. and as the high lord ? he had the right to call for her. he knew what it would do with her mother, but kai wanted to take the risk. recklessness was something he couldn't completely abandon even in power, and he could only hope that she didn't fret too heavily when he'd sent that first letter. but kai needed to stop the game he'd been playing, he needed to see if solara actually enjoyed his company, simply put up with him, or if she was acting under the pressure of her mother. he cocks a grin at her greeting, unable to help it. "i thought we were done with pleasantries." hearing his name on her lips was something kairos simply could not get enough of, the title was fun, but stars, her voice was just perfection when his name was involved. kai knew he was becoming helplessly obsessed with a woman that he was clueless over, not knowing if she even felt the same for him, but his heart, for once, could not help it. "thank you, sol." he nearly uses a title in return, but kai pushes to call her by the nickname he's heard her sisters use to set the tone of the meeting. "it was no trouble at all, did you not encourage me to visit?" had she? she'd spoken of its beauty, he'd taken it as an invite. "please, sit. i've asked for cakes and tea to be brought out." kai gestures to the bench overlooking the gardens, a bold choice where he intends to sit beside her rather than across.
talia & lucerys , at dragonstone
being hauled off to the dragonstone palace had left the lady tyrell in all sorts of moods, and ones she hid well. talia wasn't opposed to stepping out of highgarden and visiting the other regions, in fact, she enjoyed it, particularly the regions that provided scenic views of the sea. dragonstone, however, lacked any novelty for her but it seemed her troubles had only began as her mother hinted as to why they were being invited by the king. the lady, however, chose to ignore it for the time being, because such talks always went on between their families but none came to fruition and she chalked this out as the very same thing. that was until two days later, her mother had all but warned her to be prepared. certainly, there were worse fates than marriage, although the eldest child of highgarden would argue, marriage to a targaryan was not a particularly favorable fate either. her parents had been wise to secure and maintain such a strong friendship with the crown, in times like these, it was hard to argue otherwise. after any talks of betrothal fell through with reena and prince jacaearys, it was only a matter of time they made another attempt and her mother had given talia a forewarning of sorts. no amount of forewarning would ever prepare her, but if she had it her way, she'd ensure it never happened. truly, she was counting on the fact that prince lucerys shared her aversion as the last thing the other would likely want is a wife. they had nothing in common, but perhaps this - neither wished to wed. for the raven-haired prince it was his endless options and for talia, there's only one man she wanted to share her life with but fate had yet to grant her that.
despite her personal distaste for prince lucerys, it couldn't be denied that the man was a striking figure standing apart in the sea of the masses and entirely too difficult to miss. it was always a mix of conflicting emotions that rose within talia each time they crossed paths, and with how tides were turning with their families and the very possibility of their fates may be twined, the unrest inside of her was a persistent gnawing. lucerys also had a habit of irritating her beyond words, with his flirting and arrogant smiles that were annoying all the same. perhaps others found it charming, but talia found them to be contrived and excessive. it was a small gathering that evening, some nobles arriving at the palace, and so far the lady had managed to be free of lucery's presence, no doubt occupied with his endless admirers. at the very least that meant he was occupied and not free to bother talia. perhaps the night wasn't all too foul, and eventually she began to actually enjoy herself, making conversation with a few pleasant individuals who shared her hobbies and her interests. her luck wasn't destined to continue, it seems, when a separation through the masses delivered the onyx-gazed prince before her as she was in his line of sight. he had caught her before she could turn away, and with a inward sigh, she took two step towards him and greeted him with practiced eased. "good evening, prince lucerys. i trust your evening has been pleasant?" her interest wasn't sincere and she was sure he'd know, he might be flighty, but he wasn't no peawit.
second born royal, first born son, the world always sat upon lucerys's shoulders in a rather interesting way. not the immediate choice for heir – no, westeros had strayed from that archaic view that only men could be an heir – but still a strong contender. still in the running should his sister fall short or their father choose a favorite. valyrian customs were strange, power was given based on strength more than simply birth order. it meant he and his siblings were almost always at odds with each other, competing for something they didn't really sign up for in the first place. lucerys had no idea if any of them even wanted the throne – he didn't even know if he wanted it, but that didn't mean they could bow out of this game their blood and father had subjected them to. in his youth, he'd rebelled in his own ways. frivolous connections, amorous nights, rumors of bastard children he certainly had not confirmed or denied… lucerys had a reputation, one he knew their company was well aware of. the prince almost found it amusing, their father inviting their vassal house of the reach to dragonstone of all places. while the prince could always say he was more at ease in their ancestral home, it was almost as if they were trying to show off a deeper, more personal side to the family by choosing dragonstone over kings landing.
and he knew well what his father was doing, what the small council whispered about and what was being encouraged. if they had it their way, a tyrell would leave this rock betrothed to a targaryen. if the ruling lady tyrell had her way, it would be lucerys to one of her daughters. the woman's fascination with him was always astounding, but luc also did play up his charm any time the rose was within his reach. he simply couldn't help it, those women were worth the effort. while the ruling lady responded well each time, he still found far more enjoyment in how her daughter responded. talia was always polite, but luc could read between the lines well. it's why he goes out of his way to find the rose, to play the game they've been locked in for what felt like ages now. his smile is nothing short of cocky arrogance rolling off of him in waves as he greets the lady. "lady tyrell." a slight bow of his head, though nothing grand. "it's always quite a time when my father sees fit to dust off dragonstone and call for beautiful company. i always enjoy the flight from kings landing and dramfyre certainly finds the accommodations here far more favorable than the pit." here she roosted in some mountain rather than under the rock of kings landing.
he vividly recalls the moment this shift occurred — this startling realization that perhaps siara would walk beside him on his path. this realization was startling because it had occurred long before they had allowed any sort of intimacy to grace their strange relationship. before kal had given into this maddening, and irrational urge to claim her, and for a time, unwanted emotions she could draw from him so easily. it was a myriad sensations and emotions then he could not place into words, she did not say so, and he's not once intruded her mind until she allowed him, and yet in her every action he felt that she was no longer devoted to the high lord or the seat, she was devoted to him. for a time, he didn't allow himself to ponder on it, to relish in that knowledge lest it be a figment of his imagination. as days turned into months, and her desire to vex him aside and her defiance ( which he long suspects was another method she adopted to further agitate him), she always turned to him. everything siara had gathered in her spying was not offered to their ruler, it was only given to the commander himself. he gradually began to understand why he could not allow himself to want her — he truly feared siara could easily become the one thing he wants above his desire for the night court. he could not allow that, not after the vow he had made his parents, not after devoting his existence to the night court as whole. he had underestimated her ability to accept all the darker sides of him when he learns of her past. while he has never doubted her love for him, he also knew that more often than not, love was never enough to keep two people together. the two had seen all around them, what love meant in the face of greater trials. he can also admit, he had been entirely misguided when it concerned his mate. their mating bond had certainly humbled him, when he felt every bit of her love and devotion for him.
his parents had been mates, and as a young boy he admired the two and thought he'd find his own, but the desire vanished the moment his family was taken from him. if siara already had not rattled his existence with her presence alone, then she had when he came to this realization that he'd finally found his mate. that began a series of endless battles within him, whilst he continued to place his focus anywhere else but upon her. despite realizing that she may have sensed this attraction between them, he knew she trusted him in all areas expect with herself and her heart. he doesn't blame her, she was correct not to trust him at all - kalore could not offer himself to her. at least that's what he believed all this time. some days he actively avoided her when the temptation become too much, didn't linger in her presence when they were alone and other times, he was entirely withdrawn and the cold man he's known to be around everyone. he had been hot and cold with her for years, and a pattern she'd likely picked upon. for once, all the discipline he held seem to vanish in her presence. the first time they had kissed had been his undoing, his suspicions confirmed, and with it that he no longer possessed the strength nor the willpower to stay away from her.
kalore would not deny he had misses being addressed as her commander, and along with, it's variants of endearments that followed. if he was thoroughly honest with himself in the past six months gaining his new title, kal is still attempting to grow used to hearing it as a whole. there was no question the titled belonged to him and was rightfully his, but after decades of working as a commander, it was a surreal term to hear, and it would remain that way for some time. his onyx gaze glints as she spoke, hands reaching to draw her closer, as his fingers brushes along the exposed skin that gown provides. as it always was when his mate is this close to him, his heart once more continues it's natural tune, further intensified when she melts into him. "no. particularly not when you are outside of our private quarters..." his voice a low, coarse sound while a hand rises to grasp her chin gently. although, siara knew that he has never desired to control her in any form, and she did seem to alter her dresses depending on the occasions. this was the only drawback to his rise to power, the time it took away from his mate. certainly, others did not demand his time as often, outside of the nobles and advisors of their court. partially due to the fact that their inner circle were never at ease around the former commander, and now their discomfort seems to amplify. he had skimmed their minds, read their discomfort, but kalore could already punish them for that, not when they remain loyal to him. they reaped the rewards of it certainly, his third in command was now his second in command. "my lord certainly has a new ring to it, doesn't it?" this is spoken against her lips, claiming a tender, but resolute kiss before he drew back to studying her features. he foresees more changes as he knew siara was debating if she wished to relinquish her role as spymaster given her role has all but changed to high lady. "hmm, you are the most stunningly horrid creature i've have ever met. so forgive your mate for his cautiousness." lips curling upward into a smile that was only for her, a firm squeezed given to her waist as he drew her closer if it was all possible. "it's been a devil of a time leaving you so early. i had known it would take a great deal of time to sort this mess, but it's far greater than i imagined. you'll be pleased to know the rest can wait till tomorrow, i merely wanted to have the invitations to the other rulers sent out." kalore had a greater goal in mind, beginning with, fixing hewn city.
siara had never put much thought into the concept of love. the product of a single night of passion rather than romance, she never had a model to mold her future off of. no, siara had been raised the daughter of a seamstress, kept away from others as none seemed to appreciate her wings, and eventually ripped away from all her comforts to be thrust into a camp ruled by the iron fist of her father. her mother loved her dearly, her father saw her as a means to further his own strength. pulled from the warmth of velaris, siara never really stood a chance. the shadowsinger became a ruthless warrior, deadly, powerful. she was everything her father wanted, only he realized too late she would never lift a finger for him. perhaps that is why siara never had the best moral compass – she was never raised to. it seemed to be yet another reason she and kalore were such a match, neither found love in traditional means and certainly didn't follow a straight and narrow path. so siara stood at his side as kal made good on the promise he made to his parents, as the magic of their court chose him and rewarded him for something many might think condemnable. while she was hesitant to be considered high lady at his side, she also had no intentions of leaving it. the shadowsinger longed for her dark shadows occasionally, but she was growing used to no longer living as a creature none knew. the most unsettling part, however, were those that now treated her as the title she refused to claim. those that looked down upon her or never noticed her presence prior to kal's ascension. she hated them, hated it, but siara was grown enough to know how to handle all of that without fussing to her mate about it.
she was, however, a fool to think that sleeping with kalore would be nothing but a physical attraction. that her daemati's mind and heart would never open up to her in a way she'd never been prepared for. that in a sea of people, a crowd of threat and fire, she would only think of him. they faced so many trials, it was almost as if the fate of prythian had only been a side story to the path their hearts walked. each bad thing that happened only pushed them together even more, only solidified that they were meant to do this together. kal began as a drug, an addiction she couldn't satiate no matter how hard she tried – and now he was the cure to nearly everything. her mate, her high lord, and one of the most important people in her life.
while kalore hates her attire, she revels in the way his fingers graze her bare or exposed skin. siara would never deny the fact that she does this, wears these things, purely for his reaction. once upon a time it had been for anyone to see her, now she only cared for his gaze. she can't deny the amusement found in his annoyance, though, and in truth, she might begin to dress a bit differently depending on the occasion. moments like this, though? she'll continue with this attire. "then perhaps you should not have such delicious reactions and i wouldn't see fit to wear such things." she teases lightly, gaze finding his as he grasps her chin. at the end of it, she was and always would be a bit of a brat. wearing such things to garner a reaction and his attention when she felt it had been too long. siara didn't care if she understood why he was busy, she still wanted him as much as possible. some understood that, stayed out of her way, others were being added to the list of people she avoided like the plague. "it suits you." admits she after the gentle kiss that only made her desire more. "though you will still always be my dear commander." a sentiment she refused to relinquish. a playful eye roll, she might very well be the grumpiest creature to wake, but refused to admit it. siara was a creature of the night, and even with their eternally starlit sky, her body still somehow knew when it was not yet time to wake. "so my mate is a coward? afraid of his own mate?" it always is impossible not to antagonize him. siara's arms drape around kal as he pulls her even closer, fingernails scraping against his head and threading her fingers through his hair. "you do know i'm more help than simply being left asleep." she would always be a spy, even if she let go of the title. siara's dealings in information would put most to shame. "if you truly mean you are finished working for the day, i'll let you pick my dresses for while the other rulers visit." and talk, she needed his insight on whether or not she allowed him to pick a new spymaster.
saint hadn't been thinking clearly when he led lux to the cauldron. he had acted on impulse, and pure selfishness. even if he could convince himself that he acted on the belief that they would be able to spend their life together, when he hadn't know he'd be taking his father's life no too long after, he should have known that of all courts, dawn would be the last placing he should be tying her too. it was never the case that he believed lux wouldn't be able to handle herself in his rather unwelcoming court, but it was always the thought that she deserved a life that was far from her human life. it was clear to him she hadn't liked her mortal life, what had made him believe it would be any different in dawn? the only difference would be, she would be with him for love, and not be forced to wed a man should her parents have decided that for her. given his actions in the dusk court, of reaching for her and than yet again, hurting her all over again, saint was proved that he had not shed his impulsiveness. of all the things he wished he could change in his attempts to push her away, even abandoning her in autumn, the one that would never allow him to forgive himself would be how he made her feel as if she was not worthy for him, for their court. he knew his princess wouldn't forget, and nor did he want her ; he wanted her to forget the pain, but not his actions. those two went hand in hand, while she didn't forget, but she forgave him and not a day goes by that he doesn't marvel over that. he doesn't know what he'd done to deserve that, but he'd made sure that he'd earn her forgiveness still. she might have forgiven him, but his amends are far from over. they had eternity together now, and he'd use every day of that to undo all of his unhurt until only the healed scars remained. while it seemed liked an impossible task, his fiery redhead didn't seem to want anything other than him and his love. that she's had always, and though he'd told after that not a day went by that he didn't of her, long and ache for her, and then proceed to loathe his existence for hurting her that way he has, he wondered if she did realize that now ⎯ thought of her every day he rose, every day he went to bed, and every minute in between. he has known, a love like theirs, despite its trials, would not vanish, and he'd known when he could not rid her from his heart why they were tied together since birth ⎯ they were mates. he does wonder how his mate would feel knowing this.
even if the high lord tries, he would never be able to conjuring this feeling ⎯ of what it was like finally having her beside him, in their home. starting his day by seeing her features, and falling asleep beside her, having her delicate frame curl against him as if she cannot find solace elsewhere but in his arms. it was why he took his best friend and commander's advice, not allow the outside noise, the whispers to weigh him down. he owed his mate that much to know she knew her own mind, would not allow anything to doubt her place beside him, not even their own fae. it went without even saying that his future high lady would win over their court soon, and they'd see lux precisely as he sees her. a brilliant mind, iron determination, and a generous heart. dawn fae were hard, but they are not heartless. for saint, lux was his beacon, for their future, and for their court. things would change in dawn for the better, and she would be the one to pave the way. the giggle that's heard from her has his smile stretched ever so slightly, his captivated gaze remains on her, shifting her so she's on the desk before him, and he drawing his chair closer and her knees brushing his chest. a hand resting on the exposed bit of her leg, as he traces idle patterns on the soft flesh. the other cupping her face, "i am afraid not, you are capable of many things, my love, but allowing me to work is not one of them." his blue hues glint as they drink in the sight of her smiling so freely at him, giggling, the woman she was before he'd hurt, shinning once more. "the best way to make the most of my time with you is to do all of my work before you rise." saint was nearly done, he no longer would need to be holed up in his office as he has these months. it had been six months since all the chaos erupted in their realm, but with carden's help, they've all but managed to stabilize their own court once more. he lets the kiss linger for several moments, feeling her gently melt into him. "i thought you might like that garden. there's another stellar view in the northeast wing if you ever wish to change things up. we'll dine there tonight. i know you enjoy sunsets, but i trust you found the charm in sunrises?" his gaze doesn't move from her as he continues, "you're comfortable here? the fae in our court, they're not troubling you are they when you're alone?" he's known that carden keeps her company, looks out for her, when saint himself couldn't.
reckless, wild, a princess of willful disobedience before proper poise, it was no surprise that lux followed to the cauldron not only willingly, but without question. lux convinced herself she was in one of her storybooks, all the way up to the moment she plunged into the cauldron and realized just how wrong she was. as if knowing it was on her mind, the cauldron's presence throbs in her chest.. lux has gotten better at hiding when she feels the disturbing pot, but she can't quite stop the goosebumps that race up her arms every so often. she and that sentient bowl of power had a very short time together from the outside, but inside it felt like an eternity. a lifetime of losing the girlhood she entered with, mortality stripped, bargains made… and she emerged a fae with powers that terrified her. perhaps lux should be thankful, had saint not broken her heart, she never would have been mad enough to find her fire in the first place. pain forged her into a different creature, one that perhaps the cauldron had always seen, and whether it was fate or the mother, lux knew she wouldn't be who she was without everything that got her here. the heartbreak had been agonizing, but it also meant she no longer took the love she had for saint for granted. she understood far more of the world she now lived in as well as his position. maturity had been forced on her, but it suited her well. lux didn't like to think about it – nor would she admit it to saint – but she had a feeling their love would not have lasted had they not gone through those dark years.
the dawn court had been as accepting as it could be, but lux wasn't bothered. she refused to believe it mattered, refused to think the opinions of other fae meant she needed to change who she was or hide away. somehow, it seemed the court was accepting that she was not going anywhere, and her opinion that they would grow to accept her due to how happy she made their high lord was true. that, and she tended to capture hearts easily when she was her charming self. either way, lux may be a creature of fire but the dawn court was her home now, she felt at peace here in a way she'd never felt in her life. lux allows her body to move how saint wants, always happy to be closer to him in any way possible. " you can't blame me for thinking that you could spend your time doing better things. " her voice is light, because while she does like to be very selfish with his time, lux is also very aware of the man who holds her heart. she knows she will always have to share him with an entire court of people – and she would never come between he and his fae. " does this mean you have finished enough for the day so i can have you all to myself ? " hope fills her voice, because whether she respects his position and tasks or not, she will always want to spend time with him. tingles race up her leg at the smallest of touches from him, the idle patterns that both calm and ground her. it reminds the redhead that her fairytale is real after all. " i suppose sunrises have their beauty as well. " she teases, playful smile on her lips. it melts a bit at his question, and lux reaches up to cup his cheeks, thumbs brushing the skin lightly. " everyone is fine, even those that seem uncertain of me are nothing but polite. " and it was the truth, she wouldn't lie to him about something like this.
amara & desmera
the lady of autumn had no proper reason to visit winter other than that she simply could go where she pleased. this is not solely due to her role of emissary but also having a high lord for a brother, and he was a brother who was quite generous, and allowed his siblings every freedom. that was the trouble with amara, she never could sit idle in one place. despite being away from her home for over a year due to them being tossed in different courts of the realm, she found herself returning to winter for numerous reasons. was it wise? perhaps not as she had no business taking such interest in winter's high lady. yet it cannot be denied that from the moment amara laid eyes on the striking lady deserma, she could not take them off of her. the winter lady seem not to refuse her presence, the months they had interacted in gaea, followed by dusk, and summer, the emissary cannot help but wonder if her interest was returned. amara had already made visits to other courts, after their realm was left somewhat shaken following the king's death and the monarchy dissolving and gaea now becoming a ninth court. it was a new era for prythian, and she hopes this means, the stretched silence among all courts, on both sides, would slowly vanish as well.
she had written to desmera every now and then, when they all returned to respective courts, and when those letters did not go unanswered she finally decides to give into her desire to go see her. far too often her mind continues to drift to the high lady. idly wondering if the other thought of amara as she has since they parted ways, and during the those months they were all captive in the whims of a sinister entity, amara could hardly be so bold in her interest. not when des, along with the other high rulers, had far much to battle. there never seemed to be a good time to even attempt to pursue her, and while she lacks no confidence whatsoever, she could not presume to be so bold with a high ruler. desmera was careful, a reserved lady, and with walls as impenetrable as the ice in her court. the last thing the autumnal fae wanted was to give her the wrong impression of herself, or question her interest. a high ruler could never be too careful. she's the same with kai, eying any woman who came near her brother with suspicion ; no court was free of ambitious individuals looking to secure the hand of a high ruler. in the same breath, never did amara imagine she'd find herself so captivated with one herself.
dressed in a winter appropriate attire, the shades of her coat and the dress underneath resembling the auburn leaves of her court, the lady of autumn waits in one of the attending rooms. a staff member informed her their high lady would join amara as soon as she was able. she waits both patiently and eagerly, peeling off her coat as the fire in this room begins to warm her, and idly surveying her appearance once more in one of the reflections. despite the journey, she still had fixed herself before stepping outside of her carriage. not too long after she settles into the lounge room, the sounds of doors opening and very familiar, steady footsteps of the captivating lady of winter greet her, and her heart responds with an unsteady leap. she rises then from her seat, turning to desmera with a charming smile, on the surface, the emissary resembles the image of a graceful lady, but her insides tell a different story. "high lady." now she truly didn't care for such formalities, often finding them tedious and a chore, but there was no doubt this time she offered this with sincerity as she dips into a perfect courtesy before the high lady. "i would offer my apologies for intruding on you so soon, but that would be a lie." des always seemed to respond well with honesty, so the lady continues this path - toeing the line of coyness and honesty. she takes a few steps closer in the other's direction, dark hues very subtly appraising the beautiful woman in her element, and if it was at all possible, des looks far more breathtaking than ever. "i had wondered if i would ever have the honor of seeing the high lady in her glory of winter."
desmera always welcomed any emissary seeking to visit her court, her own would either come back from their travels or another of her circle would host. in truth, desmera didn't really try to visit with others from different courts unless the wind carried her that way. the lady of autumn had not originally been a special case – but something in the time they spent together changed. des felt a flutter of excitement when the other sent word to visit, and the high lady had wasted no time in having one of the finest suites prepared for the other fae. they may also be nearest her own, a place typically reserved only for family. nobody questioned her choice either, they were growing accustomed to the high lady's preferences in people as well as they simply were pleased to see her happy. des had yet to admit that it meant anything more than a good friendship, but she also couldn't deny that what she felt for amara was unlike anything she felt for another friend in her life.
just as she couldn't deny the smile on her lips when the first letter arrived, and each after that. amara had a way of pulling out a side of the high lady that nobody had ever seen before, at least, not one that had surfaced since the passing of her parents. while plenty in her court and inner circle had questions, none seemed to reach her ears. they accepted that something had brought a light back to their high lady and were simply thankful for it. her siblings were another story, lailah of course had no boundaries and desmera loved her for it, but the rest were silent. and in truth, the dance she and amara began was a slow one at best. the smallest flame burning as it grew and grew. but those letters once they were all freed from the tyranny over their heads… those letters had seemed to grow something that desmera had been too busy to focus on properly before. it was easy for her heart to slowly slip away from her own chest, plant itself with each letter taht amara received. des wasn't quite ready to act on that, but it did mean that she couldn't help but find the autumn lady sat in a different place than most.
it's that same smile that graces her lips when the high lady sees the autumn fae dressed in winter attire, but autumn color. it seems to fit perfectly, as if that is what amara would wear should she live here. des couldn't help but picture such things, and she knows she has no business doing it. des is also aware that the moment she pushes through the door entirely, she won't have time to admire the sight. and so the high lady moves slowly, she enjoys the moment, and then she steps into the space fully. " you did not need to stand. " she says softly. des has never been the loudest person, but she finds with amara she can fully relax, be in a state she finds so rarely these days. and that's why amara's comment makes her laugh, a genuine amusement rolling from the high lady. " you have nothing to apologize for, i was quite happy when you informed me of your intention to visit. " honesty, as if she's dancing around the subject, but she is also well aware that amara wasn't being cagey either. " however, if you ever curtsey before me or use my title, i shall have to deny your company. " amusement sparkles in her eyes, she's more than joking, but des also hopes the undertone is clear. they don't need to dwell on such things when it is just the two of them. the high lady moves further into the room, standing before amara so they might share the lounge the autumn lady had chosen before des arrived. " and how does it compare to your imagination ? "
alistair & cedrian
"i want to ask you something." alistair begins as his brother enters the communal spaced shared by their family. sitting up right and moving his gaze to ced, after waiting for his brother's meetings to finish, he had paced back and forth in this very room. "how did you know alina was your mate?" alistair had dropped the formality entirely, upon the high lady's own request, and he's relieved for this as she is his sister now, and it was all but official anyway with how his brother had complete the mating ceremony. no one was more happy for ced than his younger brother, and the radiance that simply emanated from the high lord of day was unparalleled, and he wasn't the only one who had noticed, the children had as well. those four deserved a maternal figure, another parental figure who would also look out for them. his nieces and nephews were attached to their uncle, so therefore, still more prone confiding in him in certain things. he had seen the questions in their gaze, and hope in their tender gazes, and alistair had assured them, that the high lady was here to stay in their lives. in a brighter turn of events, they taken an equal liking to nerina as well but this wasn't surprising, he'd seen how great she's with him, and if it was possible all, he fell for her even more. it was thrilling how well nerina seem to fit right in among them, and now he only just needs an answer to his question. a part of him, deep down, already knew because what else could be behind the depths of his longing for nerina? how the thought of not being with her left him more terrified than anything. that when he couldn't name his emotions towards her, this pull was so strong, it felt as if his entire world titled on it's axis.
cedrian's brow cocks when his brother begins, mind swirling with snarky replies – only he isn't able to offer a single one, for his brother's next question leaves him in a frozen state. it doesn't last long, mere seconds at most before a smile begins to spread across the high lord's lips. "well, i sincerely hope you mean the lady nerina and not another fae you've recently come across." the snark lands, finally, though his tone is warm as a happiness begins to bubble up in the elder brother. ced wanted nothing more than for his siblings to find true happiness, and he knew with alistair that would always rely on finding his mate. rare indeed, but he had hopes for his brother. it seemed those hopes were coming true. ced decides then he won't tell alina either, not yet. he wouldn't want to ruin anything between his brother and mate. his heart knows alina will forgive him, his mind worries she will be cross when she realizes. "i'd been in love before." he doesn't go into detail, alistair was well aware of his late wife. "when i met alina the pull was far greater than any level of attraction i'd ever felt before, and the longer we were together the stronger it became. it was different than simply falling in love, it felt as if the stars lined up to grant me a woman who was so perfectly matched for me that i could simply be with no other." it's almost difficult for ced to talk about it, his late wife was a very healed wound at this point but sometimes he worried if he worded something poorly it would be a slight against the love he had with her and the children they created. while not his mate, they'd had a beautiful relationship. even still, it was nothing compared to what he felt with alina, and sometimes he wondered if the mother knew what she was doing by giving him a wife to tame him, ruin him, and then a mate to build him again. "and eventually there was a pull to her actual being, i could tell where she was or when she entered a room without even looking or relying on any other scent. this only strengthened once when completed the mating ceremony."
while it has taken many years, it seemed that finally, albeit gradually all of the light in the day court palace finally returns. it had been years since he felt his home to be so lively since losing two of their loved ones, first their father, and then his sister-in-law and the high lady of day. it had been a severe blow to the asters, and to their entire court who loved her. alistair's heart ached for his brother, the little children who's laughter once echoed through the halls of their palace that was quiet while their father grieved and closed himself off. those years had been the darkest and the most trying, and while he was not very religious to begin with, the younger lord had prayed to their great mother to do something to help his brother. in that time, alistair had not only been the caretaker of his nieces and nephews, he'd been straddled with the responsibility of their court. he didn't like the latter at all, constantly wondering if he was doing something wrong, but that time had certain taught him much that perhaps he was capable of much if he put his mind to it. alistair didn't think low of himself, he was a competent and intelligent man despite his lack of passion for court affairs, but he had known those years had changed in ways he didn't imagine and being commander had been both a blessing and a curse of sorts. then something miraculous occurred, his brother found happiness in another, albeit another ruler, but alistair didn't care so long as his brother remained as he was now, consistently smiling - a new man entirely ( after alistair had managed to talk him down of the guilt ced had felt for even loving someone else that wasn't lady elena ). there were two miracles that occurred for the aster siblings, and for alistair it was in the form of the high lady's younger sister. nerina. just the mere thought of her had his insides fill with warmth, a sense of something missing finally found. alistair hadn't been in love before, not ever, and the reason had been because he had seen ced find a great love, and so the commander decides he wouldn't settle for anything less. when ced publicly announced his relationship and how he'd been mated to the high lady of summer, it was then the thought had struck him, a concept that lingered on his mind since that day and consistently appearing since nerina stepped onto day - properly this time in his palace, for him. it has to be her, right? who else if not her? even now when he thinks back to how they met, and how alistair only sought her out to spy on her and her sister, he had never imagined she'd become such an integral part of his life. now, he didn't want to imagine his existence without her. he pocketed that thought to finally ask his brother, how he knew it was lady alina. alistair simply had to know before he uttered a word to the woman he loves. aster men were free spirits, cedrian had been before he fell in love, but one thing was certain when they fell, there was no force on this earth that could erase that love.
alistair had been on the training grounds with his third in command, and admittedly he had been a bit absent in his role, too distracted, and not wishing to leave nerina's side. there was no better site than his possible mate in his home, as if he belongs there - she did and she would. books didn't interest him, swords certainly did, but for awhile now even they couldn't hold his attention whilst the summer lady was around. he was about to call it a day with his fellow commander, when said summer lady appears, and a smile curves his lips as his gaze drinks in the sight of her. it also hasn't missed his attention how she seem entirely focused on him in his semi form of sweat and a shirt that simply clung to his hard frame. his companion leaves swiftly after offering a greeting to ner, and it's then he places the swords against one of the pillars. her quick remark drawing a low chuckle, and he waits till she's close by him and then he's drawing her towards his frame. "next time i will have you join me." he promises, "my fellow commander has been gossiping with our general of how distracted i've been since you came." he squeezes her waist, dropping a kiss to her cheeks. "can they blame me?" alistair thinks, this should appease them for the next week or so, as he had made it clear only to call for him if it was absolutely imperative.
nerina had pieced together quite a bit of the day court since her sister decided to entangle herself with the high lord. before she'd even tried to get closer to alistair to learn more, nerina was well aware of the darkness that fell upon their brightest court. she understood loss well, her heart ached for the children of the court that lost their mother and high lady. but her sister seemed to bring a side of the high lord back that none had really seen. nerina had heard plenty of the flirtatious, arrogant man that shared many relations but never his heart – that was hardly the creature her sister had mated. and save what her sister did to him, cedrian brought out a side of alina that nerina had never known. not growing up close had been a detriment to the sisters, bonding over their forced proximity and both better for it. alina fell in love, nerina realized the importance of her siblings in her life, and then eventually also found a man who deserved more than only shreds of herself. alistair had been a means to learn more of the man her sister was in bed with, he turned into more than she could have ever expected. ner had never asked for such a love, the mother sought fit to bless her anyway. she learned more of the wound the loss of day's high lady, how deep it had run and how alistair had been so strong to guide his court through it, to be there for his own family. it made her love him even more, he wasn't simply the arrogant cocky flirt she'd initially assumed him to be. who ever knew she would be here, in the day court alongside her sister and the man she loved. she just knew the fates were laughing, but nerina was too happy for once to care. being with alistair was nothing she ever expected, it was a love she'd never felt on the seas and certainly not something she was ready to accept but happier for it.
exploring the day court as a guest of one of its lords was different than when she ventured into the port cities. nerina used to hate being looked upon as a noble, as a higher being simply by the blood in her veins from the father she hated. now she found she didn't mind it, not when those who looked upon her knew she was here for him. knew he was hers and she was his. possessiveness was a streak she was not a stranger from. who could blame her ? when alistair was on the field, shirt clinging to him and hiding nothing of the form she admired, kissed nearly every space of, muscles flexing as he reminded all who watched that he was no weak lord or commander. her body glides over to his, and when his arms band around her to yank her frame to his sweat soaked chest she only laughs. nerina has never been bothered by such things, but she knew plenty of ladies who would absolutely be screaming at the idea. " you should, you might be surprised at how i fair on the pitch. " teases she. her hands wrap around his neck, fingers lightly scratching against his head. " you have been distracted, i hope, otherwise i'm not doing a good enough job here. " adds the summer lady.
as did the other rulers, he's certain, when saint awoke every morning to attend to his daily duties since returning to dawn, establishing stability back to his court, this time it was not with a foreboding sense. when he rose each morning, his mind was not assaulted by unwanted thoughts, nor with a permanent ache in his heart that he was certain would never vanish since he'd abandoned lux in the autumn court. after all they'd witnessed and all that he feared, of losing her in the mayhem of a psychotic dark entity, it certainly had placed most things into perspective for the high lord. beyond that, seeing lux nearly everyday and never allowing himself to go near her, and then hurting her once more after their shared night together all those months prior. saint had been exhausted, exhausted of finding excuses to relieve his own guilt of what he'd done to her. as carden had once told him, saint maybe a high lord, but that did not give him leave to decide what was best for everyone else, and certainly not lux. he had spent so much time believing he knew what was best for her, he never stopped to think what she wanted. he had allowed his own fear of his court to come in between the only thing that made him happy in his entire existence - the fiery princess of mortals and keeper of his heart. it was nothing short of a miracle that despite all the pain he caused her, she still loved him. so, he did the one thing he could to show her that his heart too always had been hers, he had asked her to join him in dawn for good. he'd made one more promise then after she accepted it, a turn of events that still leaves him shocked, that he'd never hurt her in that way again. saint wasn't perfect, lux knew this well, but he'd certainly never make her regret loving him every again. then there was the fact that he'd learn not too long after, one he couldn't focus on, the one thing fables spoke of and something he wasn't sure existed - his mate. by now, there was no doubt left that she was his. why else had the cauldron blessed her? that perhaps this had been her fate all along, to leave her world behind, to meet him, even if he had a hand in it. these strange sensations all led to one fact - that despite his resolve to stay away from her, he sought her out anyway in the mayhem. he should have known he was fighting a losing battle.
saint sat in his office, attempting to finish going through the parchments quickly so he could find the love of his life. in between when she was off exploring her new home, and he happens to catch glimpses of her whilst crossing paths to the otherwise of the palace of thesaris, it brought a newfound warmth, seeing her so...free. despite being in foreign court, lux had quickly found a way to make it her home and it overjoyed the male. it seemed his mate was through waiting for him, so when she waltzed inside his office, claiming the seat beside him with ease. he raises a brow at her shade of choice, though he'd never for a second believe that leaving her court behind did not mean she'd let go of what she's known all these years, he is pleased because he didn't wish for her to give up anything. his gaze does admire the peak of a slit before he returns it to her pretty features, a hand reaching out to squeeze hers, "against my will, my love." he murmurs, "the entire time, all i thought of what was when i could join you." he closes the parchments with his free hand, and puts them to side, "i did promise my undivided attention, so you shall have it now." he leaned forward and kissed her tenderly, brushing her fiery locks behind her hair, "what did you get up to today?"
when she first came to prythian, lux imagined this would be what her life looked like – staying in saint's bed even after he went to work for the morning, witnessing the beautiful dawn skies from the many open windows and spaces every room seemed to offer, a domestic sense of peace that came with being loved by the person you loved. when none of that happened it'd been hard to picture her purpose in the land of fae – now that she had it sometimes the former human struggled with it. each day she woke, with or without saint still in the bed served as a constant reminder that she was in the place she hadn't thought she'd be – the place that dreamer of a human thought was meant for her. the pain she endured because of saint wasn't forgotten, but it was forgiven. it pushed her to grow into a different fae than she'd originally been out of the cauldron – a fae that could stand by his side under the gaze of each fae that thought she was unworthy of it. unworthy of him. none would ever know what it took for them to get to this point – but lux had the belief that it may have been needed in order for them to be as strong as they were now. the back and forth they dealt with while prythian was in turmoil hadn't been for the faint of heart either, but lux loved him – she couldn't stop loving him even if she'd wanted to at one point. and in truth it seemed that's what saint needed, to see that despite it all their hearts still dang for one another. the invitation to dawn had been all she'd wanted at one point, pain made her cautious, but her heart won the battle. now she had no regrets, she was trusting the man she loved, the high lord who she knew she could.
lux didn't mind when she got odd looks as she explored the palace, all knew who she was at this point and most left her alone. whispers went ignored, just as they did when she was a human. the redhead could only imagine what they would be if they knew her history, rather than just a fae their high lord had chosen to court. when her eyes finally rested upon saint she didn't waste a moment in scanning each of his features, looking for signs of stress, of exhaustion. instead he just seemed pleased to see her, especially when she stopped beside him and leaned against his desk. lux's eyes stayed on the fae she loved, a slight giggle slipping from her lips at the look he gave her before speaking. " you could have called for me to join you sooner, though i suppose you would not have gotten much work done. " the teasing tone in her voice leaves no question, she'd distract him one way or another. at the mention of his full attention, she leans down, their faces already almost level due to their position but now perfectly so. the timing was pleasing, her smile dissolving into the kiss and her body wishing to do nothing more than to melt into him. " reading in the gardens, the light is perfect there. " she'd always been a sunset kind of girl, but dawn was a particular beauty that she felt changed her mind.
despite the reason she came to be in this realm, the shadowsinger had always remained optimistic when it came to the matters of the heart. perhaps a trait she had inherited from her father, a man she hadn't yet the chance to meet, but had now seen him from afar until she gathers the courage to approach him. rohan was a man not easily found, but her shadows had uncovered him in the end. despite the anger she held in her younger years, all the running she'd done, maybe a piece of her simply did not wish to give up the idea that she has someone to call her own in this realm. she had heard the term mate whispered all around, winter held many a pair of mates. never in her existence did she imagine her other half to be the summer spymaster. she often wonders, if daxton was hers, why else two fae, polar opposite of each other could be so drawn to one another this way? that instead of two spymasters attempting to outsmart one another for their own gain, suddenly become so entangled? despite her efforts not become attached to him, all she wanted was to be near him, want him to want her, as much as she wanted him. the curious feeling for lailah had been the ache she felt - pain was not new to her, it had been her companion since she was a young girl, desperately attempting to gain her mother's affections. but this ache he drew from her was one that nearly engulfed her. despite the attraction that was shared, daxton withheld himself, so had she upon their initial meetings, and even as they slowly did away with pretenses, the summer spymaster kept this heart tightly sealed. until she learns, that like her, he too ran, ran from everyone who dared to become closer to him, ( outside of his friendship with his high lady ).they both had their demons, and yet they two fractured souls who, together, could mend those fractures piece by piece. to this day, she knows he struggles to open up fully, he had shared plenty with her in summer, but lailah was patient, once he gave her his heart, she would not ask for anything more. they had much to figure out, that this constant back and forth wasn't a permanent plan - in truth, lailah would not ever ask him to leave summer for her, knowing well that lady alina was his only family.
her shadows alerted her of his presence first, they now entirely attuned to daxton's presence and very essence. and in stark contrast to the man she loves, bundled in endless layers of fabrics, she was dressed in far less. a long sleeve blue dress, in a warmer fabric of wool, but still left little to imagination as it hugs her frame perfectly, that was only lined by the edges with fur as a source of warmth. the frost and the bitting cold did not bother her, but she did fear allowing daxton to roam outside for prolonged period of time lest he genuinely attain frostbite. "why don't you just admit you like to see me suffer a bit." she counters without missing a beat, relishing in his boyish smile that never failed to produce butterflies in her belly. "payback for drawing you out to winter, perhaps?" lailah continues her teasing, knowing that he would do so for her every time. although, when she could, and des could spare her for longer, the shadowsinger would winnow over to summer. while the summer heat was somewhat uncomfortable, it was not unbearable, and she could not deny she enjoys spending their time together in adriata's many, many refreshing pools and waterfalls. she steps closer towards him, and then drawing him to her, both because she wishes him closer and that she could provide some warmth. despite being a winter fae, lailah always did run warm. a hand rises to cup his face, his own flesh warmer than her own, dropping a kiss to his cheek she murmurs, "i've never been, so why not?" when she pulls back enough to peer at his gaze, by habit now the other hand rises to brush the hair by his temple. "i am done attending to my high lady for the day, if you wish we can go warm up in the hot baths. i've already asked the staff prepare one." lailah had asked the staff to keep the fire going in her quarters for him, so that each time he enters their shared space, it would be to his liking.
one of his friends had made a joke that daxton would only visit the winter court for love – they had not been wrong. daxton had visited winter as rarely as possible throughout his life, it made sense how he missed it to be the home of his mate. but here she was, putting up with his misery that he'd only endure for her. the amusement lailah took in his displeasure of this weather was something he'd also happily suffer for. in truth, he'd do anything for her – other than perhaps admit that she was his. daxton wasn't afraid to tell her, he knew how much lailah loved him – he just hadn't figured out how yet. the information felt sacred, precious, deserving to be shared in a moment befitting of it. it also felt rude to keep, and a bit of anxiety clawed at his chest in hopes she wouldn't be cross if she realized how long he'd known. there was also the matter of their positions, he knew alina supported him in this endeavor but would her high lady be so gracious ? understand that their love for one another did not erase the loyalty they held to their courts. but where would they land ? he couldn't ask her to leave her position – he couldn't stomach leaving his. more reasons for daxton to keep things bottled up, for now. they'd already been through so much to get to this point, for lailah to unravel his defenses and force him to learn that running wasn't the safest and only option. that allowing someone to know him wasn't a danger. that he could have more in his network that alina alone. and to understand his friendship with his high lady wasn't a threat – it was a benefit. he simply had no regrets now that she'd broken down his walls.
sneaking up on her was impossible, and daxton never really tried. he simply aimed to impress his presence upon her as quickly as possible. the shadows that lingered in the corners were tattle tales, he'd told them so on several occasions. rather than dwell on them, he simply allows his eyes to drink her in, jealous she doesn't require as many layers as he but thankful for it all the same. she's a vision any time he sees her, something about the winter fashions and her natural habitat surpassed the regular beauty she held. " you would not suffer in autumn, it would be the perfect balance for us both. " he argues with a teasing tone. " it's freezing, and i would only suffer for a good reason. " he says with a lazy grin, hoping she doesn't misunderstand the reason in the slightest. his arms band around her the moment she's close enough, both for warmth and the primal desire to hold his mate anytime he could. he needed to tell her, the thought circling in his mind once more but banished when he reminds himself that they have far more to figure out first. daxton forces himself to be more present, rather than worry in front of the creature who will suss it out of him at rapid speed. his gaze remains down upon her face, and he chuckles at the simple kiss to the cheek and demands another upon her lips. his are cold, he's not sure how enjoyable it is for her, but savors the taste of her on his lips as he pulls back once more. " it can be rather nice. " and traveling with her had an allure he'd never held before. " i would desire nothing more than to warm up with the woman i love. " he says easily.
mates, all this time, was a difficult concept for her to grasp, rather in it's very belief – it went hand in hand with the concept of love. all things one would read of in fairytales, but someone like her could never believe in. how could she when her concept of such emotions was so twisted? her father may have loved her mother, and sometimes, very rarely, she wonders if thalassa had been legion's mate and neither or both ever knew, and still had a downward and lasting effect on her father. their familial love had been tainted, so there was no question of romantic love. alina could not entertain such notions, and it was made easy when she knew that while many things were possible for her, a mate was not, neither was the love from a man like cedrian. it was always the same question, would he still love and desire her when he knew all of her? would he realize she was not for him, something as tainted as her should not be near beautiful things like him and his family? this was of course before she had known what the death of his wife had done to him, it had shattered him. losing his high lady hadn't made cedrian a cruel man, he simply closed his heart to love after he had finished grieving lady elena. it was all the more reason alina felt conflicted, that he offered it to her of all, and she feared taking it no matter how much she desired him, and everything he offered. so, alina had place those boundaries the moment they began their affair, not because he was difficult to love, but because he was easy to love, and that was dangerous for her, for them. they were rulers, what chance they have? she despised pretend as if she did not see tenderness in his gaze for her that went beyond physical pleasure, that yearning in his gaze that rivaled the yearning in her heart. she should have known then the moment she allowed him into her heart, that perhaps he was her mate. hearing the words from him when she tells him she loves him for the first time, and his confession he'd known it was her, left her reeling. it dawns on her how long he kept this knowledge to himself, and for how long she had hurt him without meaning to? it was frightening still, but alina was done allowing her fears to rule her even with all the unknowns. how could she, when each time he addresses her as 'love', 'my mate' filled her with so much happiness, as it did to utter those words to him. eventually, things did fall into place, with their courts, with his children, whom alina fell in love with each moment she was with them. they might not be her children, but they are her kin, and her family. alina worked every day to earn their respect and their affections, she was not their mother, but she would be there for them in any capacity they needed. a maternal figure, a friend, anything. like their father, the aster children were filled that same love, boundless and bursting bright like day's radiant sun, and one that made room for alina.
waking in the day court, in her mate's chambers, she hasn't wished to move, not when the sheets smelled like him. he is a high lord, and many awaiting his presence so alina rose with him, planning a day with nerina and the children. when cedrian left to bath rooms, she sat by his vanity, donning in a thin slip gown, as she brushed her hair when he walks in. her honey gaze follows his too perfect damp frame as it moves closer to her. gaze fighting to remain his god-like features and not where the water trails to his lower waist. her frame remains still when his mouth grazes across her shoulders to her neck, it's then her eyes nearly close at the sensation, heading tilting to offer him more, and as it always did, every inch of her skin burned, and yearned for more. a hand rises to curl around his neck, fingers reaching for his damp hair, her heart has not yet learned to be still when he whispers that very term by her ear. "good morning indeed." the softness and the sureness of them causing nearly a shiver to race down her spine. "hmm, my mate, if you wish for us to leave this room, you ought not to hover near me this way." not that she would make a move to shift away. her fingers burrow into his short, cropped hair, shifting closer to him despite her attempts of being stern.
it was almost laughable, how worried he'd been to tell alina the truth. how he'd second guessed what the fates had granted them and worried he was wrong. cedrian's heart had known all along – his mind just needed to catch up with it. with stories of mates being impossible to find, of how they could be born centuries apart and never meet… well, cedrian was fine never finding his. what he hardly expected on top of that was for his brother to find his mate – something that he'd wished for all of his siblings and children but never voiced. now that mate of his brother's was alina's sister, and well, the irony was far more amusing than he cared to admit. cedrian hadn't spoken about it with alistair, he wasn't even sure if his younger sibling realized, but to him it was plain as day. it seemed his worry over being wrong only applied to himself – now he was filled with confidence. perhaps it was due to the journey that he and alina had gone on, the back and forth, the push and pull that they both did to the other based off what they thought they knew. while it had all worked out, he could only imagine how the fates felt as they pulled the strings all along. and when cedrian had realized what they were ? well, then he had to realize that alina would struggle with the idea of them being mates. she was a cautious creature by creation, forged by the force of her father and hardened by her time as high lady. he couldn't fault her for it – he loved her all the same. and so he carried the truth with him, how it ached in his chest to tell her but he knew the time needed to be right. but then the word love left her lips, his heart ached in a way that it never had before. it didn't feel like a betrayal of his time with ellena, her memory, it felt like a revival of himself. alina carved a space in his heart for herself and he knew that's where she was always meant to be. maybe they were high rulers, but the magic of a mate bond superseded anything in their realm. he'd risk anything to keep it, to keep their love, and with luck they'd yet to see a reason to bring that out in him.
so he called her to his court, having admired her own and deciding she needed to see his. the day court welcomed her as he expected, the palace warming to her presence and shimmering like the sun above them. ced expected it to be a difficult adjustment for her – she was unused to the lack of solar movement, but she took to it like a natural. it even further proved that she was always meant to be here. he hums slightly as his lips grace her skin, as the taste of her washes into his mouth and overwhelms his senses. it's an addictive drug, his mate. the way her body reacts never ceases to amaze him and increase his ego, melting in a way that made him wonder if she even noticed. a chuckle slips at her words, and he moves to press his nose to junction of her shoulder and neck and inhale more of her scent. she uses the word that makes his heart sing, the truth there is no hiding. " are you so sure about that, my love ? " he asks with a slight chuckle.
his mate would never have quite judged him nor his motivations. after he had opened his mind his shadowsinger, he had dared to lower the darkest parts of him that he had kept hidden in the initial stages of their relationship. truly, how long could he have succeeded in hiding from her before she herself snuffed it out? their mating bond aside, not much could be hidden from his love. as she, loyal as ever to him, has always been since their meeting despite their complication relationship then, it was one thing the newly appointed high lord of night excelled at it was reading others without the use of his daemati gifts. it was the strangest sensation that his gut, every voice in his mind had, instinctively told him he could trust siara despite how she vexed and tortured him. he still recalls their conversations six months prior, when mayhem with the boy king ended, and their court, as well as rest of prythian was left in upheaval, and kalore lined with frustration and admitted how the only way to preserve their court, their scared city was to be rid of their high ruler. it had been a great calculated risk, seeing that his efforts have might have been met with his own demise, that the magic might not have chosen him in the end, and still siara stood by him. more importantly, no fear to be seen in her dark, intense gaze, when he revealed what he intended to do. now that the title and responsibility were his, kalore was learning that desiring something like this and then obtaining it, were two very different things. it was not the challenge he fears, he welcomes it, and he was not alone on that seat his mate is right beside him - for all intent purposes, she is his, and night's high lady. to say if he had been busy as a commander, being high lord was a category of it's own. leaving their bed was the one thing he struggles with in the mornings he had to rise early to attend to his business, that is the one thing he missed with his old life - having the peaceful mornings with her.
the term mate still left him with a plethora of emotions and ones he welcomes. he's certain he would never grow tire of uttering that word towards her. as if siara is reading his mind, she appears in split second within the throne room. his gaze swiftly sliding over her slender frame, that only seem to cover her most intimate parts. for kalore it was a dislike of others seeing her in this form, but after months of requesting her to only dress as such when they were alone, he knew it was a futile battle. the high lord's right hand rises in a dismissal motion to the few figures in the throne room. "if you wish to torment me by moving about the palace this way..." onyx gaze trailing over her in a both equally heated and somewhat defeated look. "love, i can return the favor tenfold." he finally responds after they are alone, rising from the high seat to close the distance between the two. a hand slipping around her scantily clad hips and drawing her closer, before he dropped a kiss to her forehead. "i had a thought to wake you as well, if i had no feared what the rest of my day would like if i had made that mistake." a hand cups her chin, so their gazes meet. "soon, once i've sorted the mess that's been left for us."
siara had her own dark and twisted nature, and while she was not outwardly a romantic, it was of little surprise the mother paired the two of them together. the more she'd learned of kalore save how easy he was to vex had only grown to soften the half illyria's resolve that she would remain alone for the rest of her days. it wasn't a horrible thought, she'd seen how love destroyed people and how even minor attachments could cause great harm. she'd once looked up to her father, after all. the first night that kalore kissed her had set off a chain reaction of something greater – something she still found amusing. siara would have told you she didn't have a mate, would have said she simply enjoyed seeing the commander so annoyed and how easy it was to do, never did she expect that she'd have been so wrong – nor did she admit it readily. and that was yet another reason she and kalore were so perfectly matched, they understood each other on a level that neither expected to find in another. what began as loyalty to the night court high seat quickly shifted to loyalty to her mate and the vision he had for their court – supporting him on his mission to ensure it happened had been as easy as breathing. she could still see the slight surprise on his face when he realized this, as if he thought he darkest depths of him would scare her away. the doubt in her love didn't concern her – in truth, she'd worried the same. yet again, though, they truly were meant for one another. nothing in kalore scared her, nothing in her scared her mate. what she had not expected was for the magic of the land to decide he was so right, well, that he deserved to be upon the seat of magic and power itself. prythian was so old it hardly ever made sense, but the rush of power she felt the moment kalore ascended the throne was awe inspiring. mates could share magic with ease, but in truth, siara left kalore to his own. she'd requested his help in blocking stray thoughts and left it at that. a spymaster should enjoy access to minds – siara felt uncomfortable hearing voices in her head.
and then there was the matter of being a high lady. the priestess said there was a ceremony, but it was nothing other than instrumental. a show for the people. siara never sat well with such things. so she focused on her mate, amused in his new position but completely separating it from herself. as the room clears – which she knew he would do – she remains with a smirk atop her lips. laughter tumbles from her lips when hs speaks, and she offers a slight tilt of her head, " do you not like how i dress, my lord ? " she doesn't use the title much, but saying 'my commander' was hardly proper now. his threat only makes her laugh a bit more, body melting into his when he's before her. she knew he hated that she dressed like this, but kalore also would never fully control her. in truth, siara would make an effort to dress differently in public – their home was simply different. eyes roll, " i would not have been that horrid. " she would have been – he was right. her sigh is heavy as it leaves her lips, " i can only be so patient, my love. " there was also the matter of if she was going to relinquish her position or not. the half fae could hardly lurk in the shadows as easily when her mate was the high lord.
alina & siara
the circumstances in which the former high ruler of night passed away left her and cedrian with infinite questions. yet given all that occurred in their realm six months prior, the death of the king, the dismantling of the monarchy, the realm at best was still picking up pieces of the aftermath. in truth, there was much wariness on her end, and much to be done to bring some semblance of stability back to their realm. to learn that the night's commander had been chosen as ruler had come as a surprise as well, she didn't know much of the man, only seeing him in passing. now, that alina was on the solar side with her mate, she and cedrian decided it might be best to pay them a visit. alina herself wished to meet the lady siara once more after their paths crossed in gaea and the maintained a constant companionship since then, after being tossed to dusk and summer. alina had offered the other lady a token of her gratitude in the form of a ring that would allow the illyrian to glamour her wings without any restraints. once ced sent word to night's ruler that they'll be stopping by, they arrive a few days later. after the four have chatted, the women broke off from their respective partners, and alina allowing siara to guide her to a private space . siara hadn't disclosed much, but a simple glance between the spymaster and her high lord said enough of what their relationship pertained. "gratitude for receiving us so soon. how are you adjusting to these changes in your court?" she inquires, her gaze settling on the younger fae.
siara had questioned the decisions of the former high lord when he continuously ignored the other high rulers, especially when she knew one a bit better than the rest. it meant she didn't gossip about the summer lady – she only informed her high lord of when news reached her that alina and cedrian had actually gone public with their relationship. it could be seen as neglectful of her position, but siara simply didn't find a reason to gossip over the woman who had granted her the ability to blend into society far more than simply hiding. many looked upon the half illyrian with prejudice and disdain, with no desire to help her appear more high fae when she would only ever be half. alina had not done so, she'd given siara the ring as a gift due to the connection they forged. it allowed siara to fully hide her wings, no more simple parlour trick that made them invisible but they truly vanished from her frame. it's why when kalore chooses to invite cedrian to night and that brings alina, the spymaster is actually quite pleased. while still not taking the role of high lady officially, siara is by kal's side when the pair of rulers arrive, a gentle and rare smile on her face as they exchange their hellos before she reaches out a hand to escort alina to one of the many sitting rooms – the two deserved to catch up after all they saw. the question alina begins with only makes her chuckle a bit, " i have yet to allow anyone to call me high lady, but i fear being the mate of the new high lord will only allow me so much more time in that manner. " it made her wonder if alina and cedrian would be taking titles in the other's court. a question for later. " change is never exciting, but i hope the night court flourishes now and can hardly question the magic that chooses what it thinks it things is best. "
alina & daxton
she eventually calls for daxton to join her and nerina in the day court - and even offering the invite to bring along his winter spymaster lover if he wishes as last she knew he was in the winter court. fates truly were strange, that one by one they all seemed to find some form of happiness in the mayhem that their realm experienced in the past year or so. in truth, she was as relieved when nerina and daxton seemed to find their other halves. after all that she experiences with cedrian every single day, she wished for them to know this feeling as well. in truth, she wanted daxton in day for him to learn of the court that would be forever tied to summer, to experience the warmth of the sun he enjoyed in summer, tenfold in this court. she also had a feeling the children would take a liking to him as they did with nerina. dare alina say, their attachment to lord alistair aside, they seemed to be developing one for their aunt. she's there to receive him when he arrives, her childhood friend, her best friend, and a man who become a brother to her. just as she preferred with her siblings near her, she too always prefers dax near her. she does see lailah, the winter offering a greeting before giving dax and alina privacy. a brow rising when he arrives in a thick coat, "tell me, is it as brutal as i've heard winter to be?"
he'd not gone to gaea expecting to find love, but daxton certainly had no complaints when it brought him the woman he would soon call his mate. it meant visits to winter – a court he had no business in with his climate temperament, but he'd survive anything for her. the winter hot springs were not nearly as fun as the summer pools, but, well, the spymaster made the best of any time he could spend with the woman he loved. which is why when the call came to visit alina in the day court, well, he was thankful for the change in climate as well as the chance to push the two important women in his life together some more. traveling with lailah was always easy, time passing quickly between the two and actually enjoyable. while they could have winowed, daxton was hardly upset at taking horse and carriage. it gave him privacy with the woman he loved before facing the woman who would go from childhood friend to sister in his books. as they slip out of the carriage he helps lailah down before turning alina, a broad smile on his lips. he can tell lailah slips away, allows him to focus on his reunion with his friend. " it's so cold, the hot springs are quite fun though. " he says cheekily as he pulls her into a hug.
kalore & cedrian
as kalore settles into his new role, the first thing he did was study further upon his solar neighbors with the intention of the doing so with the seasonal side. much news reached his ears, both thanks to his shadowsinger and mate, and due to his extended reach of his gifts. as commander he had done his due diligence then, but there some information he wasn't privy to until he had become high lord of night. as news of his role as high lord likely had sent surprise to the realm, the news of two rulers entering a relationship leaves the daemati somewhat equally stunned. the knowledge was only imperative for him simply due to the implications it held for courts. alliances of course occurred, but two rulers being romantically involved had never been recorded or known - and two rulers from different sides of the realm. he suppose, the only uncover any political ramifications was to know more of his solar neighbor. kalore knew enough of lord saint and lord cedrian, and the high ruler of dusk , nothing about them particular struck him as concern worthy, from his own gathering, the two likely were rare individuals who appear sane and level-headed, thus far anyway. as much as he hesitated, he too sent an invite, learning that the high lady of summer was also currently in the day court. two birds, one stone, he supposed. once the women parted ways from them, kalore led the high lord of day to a private lounge. his onyx studied the other male with subdued curiosity, "what will you have for drinks?" kalore, despite his hardened exterior, still had some manners.
cedrian had looked upon the transition of power with a curious gaze – but so long as it stayed in the night court the day lord had no concerns. stability was important to a court, he could only hope that this change would offer it finally. while he'd not interacted much with the former high lord, well, that was the problem. prythian would not survive with siloed courts, and after all they faced he expected far more of the night lord to receive nothing at all. letters ignored, requests for meetings denied, and no show of a desire to know your neighbor. ced left it alone, called it a day, and it seems the fates had a very amusing way of laughing at that gesture for the former high lord hardly lasted much longer after that decision was made. curious, though he could imagine what occurred quite easily. again, though, it had nothing to do with cedrian so long as it did not harm his court. besides, how could cedrian judge when he was also sure to be surprising the courts with his decision to formally mate alina. he'd not heard anything poor of the new high lord of night either, only what his spymaster granted him which was not much. it could be concerning, ced didn't find it surprising. and so when the invite came he agreed, not repeating the actions of the former high lord. it turned out that the high lord's mate also had a connection with alina, which left the men to talk amongst themselves. " i'm quite easy to please, wine of any kind so long as you accept i shall always favor that of day. " he says with a light bit of amusement in his tone, attempting to keep the tone of the conversation easy.
saint & carden
what seemed like a lifetime for the high lord of dawn — it seems as if peace had finally found saint. despite the unease of the realm following the events six months prior of being tossed to different courts and then all the high rulers ending the king once and for all. saint always wished for peace for dawn, something it lacked under her father's rule. still, he wonders, was bloodshed rooted so deeply in his destiny? he had slayed his father, and he had to do the same with a young king ( right alongside the other rulers ), even if the latter wasn't his decision alone. he was certain his best friend and commander was entirely relieved he'd take the other's advise and ceased dwelling on what he'd done and could done with lux and allowed himself to simply be with her. he'd always been of the opinion that he didn't deserve after all that he'd put her though, but saint could either lament over it or begin making amends, so he began by asking her to come with him to dawn, to stay by his side — for eternity. "he looks up as carden simply walks into saint's private quarters as if the other owned the place. there was a brief roll of his eyes, "you should start getting into the habit of knocking now that i share these quarters with your future high lady."
carden has no complaints when saint finally decides to stop fighting his happiness. while he still wasn't too sure how the court of dawn would take it, he felt that the former human had hidden her nature enough that the uproar may only simply be due to her seasonal nature rather than the fact she was not born high fae. it was a secret the second in command would be keeping, not his business to share. carden may no longer be the emissary – traveling and gathering, but he still enjoyed being a vault of secrets for his high lord. a man who, as his best friend, carden often felt he had no limits with. he could waltz into the man's room with no cares, and certainly was not thinking about the fact that it was no longer solely saint's. he did, however, know that the lady lux was off in the library – where she often seemed to retreat to when saint was busy. carden made a mental note that he'd need to swing in and check on her – the dawn court could be harsh towards outsiders and the shield saint offered would only extend so far. saint's greeting only causes carden to roll his eyes and chuckle. " she's in the library, and you have yet to ask her to be your mate and high lady. " carden says pointedly as he moves to go sit on one of the lounges as if he does truly own this space.
alina & nerina
it was much later in the day when she finally locates ner in a gazebo outside. or the very best attempt to tell time when the sun was around at all hours, although alina certainly wasn't complaining. it had been a slight adjustment to such daylight every minute of the day, and then learning what time of the day it was. what alina did know without a doubt was how majestic ced's home was — nothing could quite compare to it. there seemed to be a different glow about her little sister that had never been so prominent before and she's certain it has nothing to do with the radiant sun. since arriving in day, alina ensured she didn't leave her sister to her own vice for too long, and while there is no doubt lord alistair kept her sister busy, she still didn't wish for nerina to think alina had forgotten all about her. when she reaches to sit beside ner on the plush seats of the gazebo, her gaze follows ner to a stunning white pegasus beyond the line of sand dunes. "beautiful, aren't they? i wish they would allows us near them..."
nerina had come to day happily, even if it felt so odd. she had made a promise not to leave the summer court for some time, but she supposed the reason she was leaving was also the reason she didn't wish to leave adriata. the bond she'd forged with alina through all they faced had strengthened the sisters to a place nerina was now quite protective over – what she'd not expected to come of that was also to fall in love with the brother of alina's mate. it was amusing, and all nerina could ever do was hope he did not have a mate of his own as she doubted the fates would ever grant two siblings mates within the same family, much less brothers. but nerina was fine with that, she was simply happy to see her sister shine so brightly. it did need to be noted, however, that while she was enjoying her time in the day court, she hated that it meant alistair had tasks to attend to. understanding duty well – she didn't have to like it. it's why she's thankful when alina finds her, whether her sister has left cedrian or her mate was also pulled away for something didn't matter. it simply mattered that they found one another. " perhaps in time. you are essentially the high lady of two courts now, alina. " she teases lightly, but the smile on her lips is full of happiness for her sister.
