I am obsessed with Daeron the Drunken. What do you mean he’s a prophet and can accurately interpret his dreams but fucking hates it. His entire family is telling him he’s wasting his gift but they don’t get that all he sees is blood and madness. All he feels is dread and horror from his dreams bc his family is going to die and he can’t do anything to stop it so he drinks to cope with everything. Better a lazy, drunk king than a mad one. HES LITERALLY A SELF INSERT CHARACTER GONE WRONG. He’s soooo related to Rhaegar it’s amazing.

Talking with men about ASOIAF is so weird because like what do you mean your favorite character is Robb, what do you mean you think Catelyn is "stupid" and her chapters are boring? what do you mean Jon is a boring character? what do you mean Arya's chapters are boring after A Game of Thrones "because all she wants to do is kill everyone"? There are several masturbation scenes shot in that now-signature Fennell style—intimate, clinical, and purposefully discomforting. The camera lingers on suggestive textures: egg yolks running through fingers, dough being kneaded with quiet aggression, a slug sliding slowly down glass. The Bee Sting

God, this book started off so strong and then it just ... I don't know think it lost its way, everything was very purposeful I suppose I just lost interest. Cass was the strongest narrator followed by Dickie followed by PJ followed by Imelda. I understand the reason for making her narration punctationless but it just became a chore to read. It just went on and on and the lack of chapter breaks offering no relief. Also I don't know that anyone has punctuated and clear inner monologues. The ending was one I should have seen coming but it still somehow felt cheap. I just. What are you trying to say here? Men murder their families because of a combination of violent misogyny and sense of ownership so the beginning and the end are connected in event but not thematically which again cheapens it. Like Murray couldn't think of a better ending so decided that everyone should just die at the end. Didn't help that I read Birnam Wood right before which had a similar ending. Part of me feels like I'm missing something. So many reviews comment on its humour? But if it's there it passed me by.

Currently on my third highly lauded read of the year and once again just not feeling it. Starting to wonder if the problem is me somehow. Like the years away from university have made me dumber and now I can't fully appreciate the genius of Booker shortlisted the Bee Sting and Pulitzer Prize winner Demon Copperhead. What am I not getting. I feel like there's something I should be getting.

Eleanor Catton is in desperate need of an American sensitivity reader. Like come on, no California billionaire is calling someone a "puffed-up prick." They'd say "obnoxious blowhard" or honestly more likely just "fucking asshole." Birnam Wood is an alright book but there are simply far too many cases of HE (West Coast born and raised American tech billionaire) WOULD NOT FUCKING SAY THAT.
