Raven was a wire pulled too tight. She wanted to believe them, wanted to believe it was that easy to escape their old lives and find acceptance. She didnât react fast enough when Tai went after her to get away.
His hands touched her back.
Moving like the lethal creature she was, she had him on his back and a blade pressed against his throat hard enough to draw a thin line of blood before she was aware of doing it. Her body shook with tension as she stared down at him, trying to figure out exactly who was underneath her at that instant.Â
It was Qrow who pulled her off of him and knocked the blade from her hand. It sank point-down into the floor, just shy of Taiâs arm. âRaven, youâre okay, weâre at Beacon, he wasnât going to hurt you.â He pulled her away from their teammate, his hands on her arms. She was shaking, and leaned against him, trying to calm down, to put her mind back in the present. âDo you think we should explainâŠâ
At this point there was little choice, wasnât there? And she knew that showing would be far more effective than telling them. She kept her face hidden against Qrowâs shoulder, not wanting to see the looks on Summer and Taiâs faces when they saw her back. She reached up under her shirt and unhooked her bra, giving herself a few seconds to brace herself before she pulled her hair forward, and pulled the back of her shirt up. From her shoulders to her hips, it looked like a mirror had been smashed but hadnât yet fallen to pieces, the glass like a spiderâs web.Â
âThis was the last straw,â she said into Qrowâs shirt. âThis was why we left.â She stood there, trembling, still able to feel the whip across her back, the agony of tearing skin, her blood pooling around her. Sheâd thought their leader was going to kill her. Some of the scars nearly wrapped around her sides. Exposed like this, it was hard to keep her mind in the present, to remind herself that the wounds had healed, and they ached like when theyâd been fresh.Â
Summer quickly went to Tai, helping him sit back up as she glanced at Raven. It all happened so fast she could barely piece together what happened. As she watched Raven pull up her shirt, she couldnât keep from gasping when she revealed her back, full of horrific scars, and she pressed a hand over her mouth to keep any more sounds from escaping.Â
How could people be so cruel to each other? It made a quiet, seething rage seep into her bones at the unfairness of it all. So maybe Summer didnât feel cut out to be a good leader, but now she was beginning to realize that she didnât have a choiceâ or she did, and that meant there was nothing she wouldnât do to make sure that Raven and Qrow would ever be harmed again. Not while she was there. Not if she had the ability to prevent it.
She let her hand fall away from her mouth. Natural instinct wanted her to reach out and pull Raven into an embrace. But now she knew better. âNo matter what happens, from this moment on weâre in this together. All of us. Okay?â Â
Tai froze when Raven took him down without hesitation, feeling a blade against his throat with lethal intent for the first time as he stared up into her furious.... and terrified... eyes, trying to hold very very still. Qrow pulled her away and Summer helped him up, his eyes still wide with shock.Â
His surprise was forgotten as soon as Raven showed them her back, a low growl escaping him when he realized what he was seeing. He wanted to embrace her again... but this soon after having a knife to his throat... he wrapped his arms around himself as well, clutching at his shirt. âThank the gods you left,â he said quietly, his blue eyes full of sorrow for the twins and their painful past. He nodded at Summerâs words. âWeâll never let anyone do that to you again. Never again.âÂ
