arthur-of-camelot:
Arthur hadn’t really thought about how his request for help might come off. He had been too focused on trying to figure out just how he’d introduce himself to the sheriff. He was thinking only about the job, not at all about anything else. That of course explained the confused look on the girl’s face. He couldn’t blame her. Arthur was definitely very single-minded with his goal.
“The streets…” Arthur echoed, his eyebrows furrowed. “They change?” That would make orienting himself quite a bit more difficult. He didn’t like it. Still, he forced himself to forget that and his concerns for a moment, a polite smile spreading across his face. “Ah of course! I am simply starting a job with the department. I want to be sure I know the place well before my first day on the job.”
"Oh, yeah-- don't worry too much about it, you know. Keep your eyes on the prize and you can probably make it." Penny had made the mistake of letting her attention wander in the past, reading or replying to a text or even just daydreaming, and had somehow ended up on the opposite side of town in no time. "But y'know, either way, it's not far - Swynlake isn't too big, you can't get too lost."
"That's cool, though. Best to be prepared." She nodded. Penny was a big believer in being prepared, as it happens. "I'm going that way, maybe if there's two of us we can get there a little easier. Safety in numbers, y'know?"
Unwanted Chemistry || Penny & Hiro
hamadaxrobotics:
Hiro decided to not highlight the fact that they did seem to be picking up speed as they moved. He stepped back in an attempt to stop it, which worked for a little bit.
“I don’t think that’s gonna happen,” Hiro said. “That sounds like a cartoon or something. I feel like we’d probably end up in the street first.”
That was most certainly not something to be relieved about, though, was it? Still, the student cleared his throat. “Right, yeah, I can pop it… Give me one second!” he requested.
And then, Hiro got to work. Using the very same thing that had made the bubble, he put in another combination. Then, he moved forward and grabbed Penny by the wrist.
What followed was the bubble popping. Thanks to a new chemical, of course, that launched them up into the air with a streak of some sort of gas that left Hiro’s invention. “Get ready!” Hiro exclaimed, and pointed down as they moved in that direction. With another chemical combination, what looked like a gooey blob was launched underneath for them to fall on.
It was sticky and disgusting, but it broke their fall. “There. See? All fixed!” the boy declared, actively trying his best to stick off the gooey trampoline.
Penny wanted to argue that everything was a possibility, thank you very much, it was impossible to know - especially in this town, which was 100% out to kill her and everyone else in it - but she kept her mouth shut. And to be honest, she was glad for once that she had held her tongue, because not pissing off the kid that could get them out of here was probably a good idea.
"I can't do much else," She muttered, because she couldn't entirely keep her trap shut, as it happened, but whatever. She watched as he fumbled about with whatever machine that was, brow furrowing. It did seem quite cool, in principle, but she was still having trouble appreciating it - maybe in a moment, once she waas out of the big pink bubble and finally free, she could ask what was going on.
She didn't have too much time to think about it, though; in a matter of seconds he had grabbed her by the wrist, the bubble had popped with a loud, well, POP!, and she was in the air, and then she was falling, and she was definitely screaming--
Penny landed in what could only be described as "ick", and she gave a horrified cry. "What is this?" She asked, lifting her arms and looking at the gloop stuck to her. She pointed an accusatory finger at the machine. "What is that?!"
Unwanted Chemistry || Penny & Hiro
hamadaxrobotics:
“Sorry, then,” Hiro repeated promptly. He knew he couldn’t get cocky considering the situation. He was lucky the girl didn’t want to strangle him to death right there and then for what’d happened.
“Don’t worry. The material will probably deteriorate before the time we have to worry about oxygen,” he commented, before raising his head to look at the girl, grinning at the question. “Yes! It’s part of my latest project,” he explained. “The idea is to give a regular person the possibility to defend themselves should they have to. These days, so many weird things happen in town that you have to feel safe somehow, you know?”
As they walked past two members of Hiro’s D&D group who were heading toward the building, he waved at them and continued on rolling downhill, slowly.
No no, Penny did. She did want to strangle him. And she would, but if he had made the stupid big pink bubblegum thing then she was counting on him to fix it, so he got to continue living. Lucky him!
Though she did feel a little better about the oxygen thing, though she wasn't exactly up to grinning like he was. "And a big pink ball is safe? Cause if anything I feel - not safe. We're going downhill. What happens if we pick up speed? What if you fall into the river and get carried away with the currents?"
Okay, Penny wasn't usually in such a bad mood, but this was an exceptional circumstance. "Listen - it's... cool. I'll give you that. But I can't appreciate it cause I'm trapped in it. Is there any way to like... pop it?"

It was strange, leaving the town he had made his home for the last two years. The people there had been good to him, and Arthur was a little sorry to go. But he knew…well he knew there was so much he needed to learn. After all, he didn’t have an answer for a lot of…one would say…or is friend Harry would say “basic” questions.
Upon exiting the taxi, a mode of transport that still gave him an unsettled feeling in his stomach, Arthur took a good look at Swynlake and…well. Nothing. Nothing immediately stood out to him. The man’s eyebrows furrowed, though he clumsily paid the cab and continued forward.
Somehow he thought he’d know why he was drawn to this place in an instant? The reality was a little different. Still, Arthur was undeterred, and he glanced around and spotted the first person who was walking by. “Pardon, I’m sorry to trouble you, but I need to get to the police station. Whereabouts would that be?”
Now, Penny hadn't been in Swynlake for too long, but she had been in town for longer than some - when half your town turned over every year or so, four years was a long time. She certainly felt like she was getting the hang of living in Swynlake, even if she was nowhere close to being a native.
So it was easy to tell when someone else was new, was what she was trying to get at; even if she hadn't, y'know, seen him just getting out of a taxi. He just had that look about him. Fresh faced, a little lost, and not permanently exhausted from the horrors Swynlake had a habit of throwing at its inhabitants.
The police station was an odd choice of first destinations, though. Most people wanted to know where they could go for a coffee in town, where the hotel was, or something.
Penny tipped her head a little to the right, and said, "It's just down this road, and then on your right - providing that the streets dont move around, y'know. Are you okay?"

hamadaxrobotics:
“I can’t tell you,” Hiro said. Honestly, he didn’t know, because he deployed the bubble out of instinct, mostly. “Not yet. It’s a mixture of chemicals. But there’s more than enough oxygen to keep us in here for a few days, I’m sure,” he assured the girl. Not that it was a great assurance, now was it?
With that, the student decided to start moving, trying to see if the bubble would roll with him. It did, and… well, not surprisingly, it seemed to start rolling on its own, seeing that the road was a little bit inclined. “Woops. It seems we’re on the move now. Did I already say sorry?”
Neither of those things were particularly reassuring, no.
A ball made of chemicals. Great. She could be breathing in anything, could be touching anything. Would she get out of here in the near perfect condition she had entered in? He couldn't tell her. And enough oxygen for a couple of days-- Penny was 18. She had many days ahead of her. She needed more oxygen than that.
She almost lost her feet from under her when the bubble started to move. She looked over at the other, trying to match her steps to his, cause otherwise she was just going to topple over. "I think so. I don't mind hearing it again, though." She prodded it once more, huffing softly. "You made this?"
Unwanted Chemistry || Penny & Hiro
hamadaxrobotics:
Hiro took some seconds to regain his five senses after the weird confusion suffered by his fall being stopped by the effectively well-made pink bubble. He looked at the girl and smiled apologetically at her without saying anything at first.
“What’s going on is, you’re witnessing a scientific breakthrough for the history books!” the boy exclaimed, certainly hoping, but not counting on, such a thing marveling the girl and stopping her from being angry.
“In other words, we’re… stuck, inside a bubble. Not just any bubble, though. It’s what happens when you mix chemistry and alchemy. It’s sort of the best of all worlds, if you think about it!”
A scientific breakthrough? Something for the history books?
This boy wasn't gonna live to see it enter the history books if he didn't get Penny outta there.
It was sort of cool, whatever it was. If Penny had been able to appreciate it for what it was, she would've certainly been impressed. But as it was, she had been on her way to her world politics class, and she was now gonna be late, because someone had ensnared her in a big pink bubble.
Which wasn't even her biggest concern, by the way, Penny was concerned about practical things. "What's it even made out of?" She asked, irritation tinging her voice. She reached out with one careful hand to prod at the thing. "Are we gonna suffocate? Cause this is not the way I wanna go."

crickey-itsjake:
The black and tan dog bounded forward towards a girl with way too many things to carry. Luckily, Sparky was trained to not jump on people. However, getting under their feet was an entirely different story so he sped up to reach her.
“Sorry! He’s normally a little less excitable but yanno dogs, they got themselves quite a nose for trouble.” The blonde tried to smile his most charming smile as he pulled his mate aside and patted him on the head to calm him down.
“Ya need some help with those? Looks like you bought enough for a real feast of a meal.”
Penny loved dogs, usually. Suga Mama had a dog and she liked it well enough, it was just that right now, Penny was carrying three weeks worth of food, and if she dropped anything there would be someone missing something (her momma and her pigs in blankets, her daddy and his fruit cake, Suga Mama and her rum...) and it would ruin Christmas.
So. Keep the dog away from her, please.
"And a nose for thirty pounds of raw meat." She agreed, grateful when the other guy pulled the dog a safer distance away.
She regarded the various bags and boxes in her arms and figured, why not. "Yeah, alright. Just uh-- take these," She said, handing over a couple of bags with some of the things she could sort of afford to lose.
"You'd think we were feeding 60 not 6, huh? Proud Family Christmas means tryna feed the 5000, and you be careful with those cause my grandmomma's rum's in there and if anything happens to it, I'll make sure she knows you're responsible. She's wicked with that cane."
Back in Town || Jake & You
crickey-itsjake:
Jake sat in the snow as Sparky bounded around him. The dog happily engaging in eating and playing in the snow as the blonde pulled the hood of his jacket up over his head. It was nice being in a small town again. Don’t get him wrong, the Australian Outback native in him thought it had been real nice to get away to the desert for several months and feel the hot sand under his boots again. But snow? Snow was a bit new. Felt new every time, like it hadn’t existed before it fell each season.
He’d been in snow before, of course. (Mostly hunting and tracking through it which was a more struggle than gain. Ended up catching their quarry though.) But to just sit and enjoy it as it fell? That was always a new experience.
“Oi, Sparks.” There that dog went again, catching a scent of something he liked and bounding off to leave Jake to scramble up onto his feet with a chuckle and jog after him.
Penny was carrying a lot of food.
And she meant a lot of food - she had been tasked with the grocery shopping for Christmas 'cause her mom was busy and her dad and Suga Mama couldn't be trusted with it, so now Penny was trooping across town with a lot of different items. Things for Christmas dinner, things for a little buffet after, things for boxing day, too, if anyone could be bothered to eat. She'd put in her order at the grocer's like it was the 1950s, and then she had waited for the phone call to let her know that it was all in stock.
So: now she was laden with two big bags, one on each shoulder, and the World's Biggest Turkey in her arms. I wasn't exactly far to her house, but with the snow, and with the amount she was carrying, and now, apparently, with a dog trying to get at her, it wasn't going to be easy.
"Uh-uh," Penny said, trying to push the dog away with her foot, as gently and yet firmly as she could manage. "Does this look like dog food to you? Who's meant to be looking after you? 'Cause they ain't doing a good job--"

Will perked up when Penny walked into Scat Cat, always happy to see their favorite customer. Work had been kind of sad since Roger left, a lot of the people who came to chat with him had disappeared along with him. So it was good that Will’s regular stuck around.
“Penny!” Will closed the inventory book they’d been lazily peeking at and got down to business.
They gestured around the store as they listed off some. “We got the new Mumford & Sons today, but if you ask me? Disappointin’. Barely any aggressive banjo. I know I talk shit about people who like The 1975, but their recent album was pretty good, we’ve got that in stock.”
“Did you ever go home and listen to that song None Of Dem I told you about? Well, the Swedish pop singer who does it, Robyn’s got a new album. I don’t think I can recommend Honey enough. It feels…raw and incomplete, like a work in progress, except like it was meant to feel that way, you know? It’s deep, moving, groovy, sensual, and frankly the best pop album of the year that will of course go unnoticed because she’s Swedish and not from the American market.”
Will grabbed a copy of Honey and handed it to Penny. “Hold on.”
She turned to the stock room and came out brandishing a copy of Chris by Christine And The Queens. “This album is just fantastic, also. The melody of 5 Dollars is perfectly poised between sweetness and melancholy; What’s-Her-Face frames a lyric about self-loathing with an ominous cloud of electronics; Billboard might not promote adventurous pop, but I damn will.”
"Of course I listened it to," Penny told them with a soft snort, pushing up to lean on her hands so she could watch Will as they flitted around. See, this was why she came here instead of just buying stuff off amazon. It was nice to see someone passionate about the music; and it was kinda nice to come in and have a conversation, too. Will was always fun to talk to, in Penny's experience.
She turned the record over in her hand, humming appreciatively as her eyes scanned the track list. She was mostly happy to try anything Will was willing to give her - her music taste was varied enough that she liked most things, and by now Will knew her well enough not to recommend something she would hate.
"Ooh, you've really been doing your homework this week huh?" She grinned at Will, taking the record from them to have a look. "And hey, I love a little adventurous pop. And I'll try anything once," She shrugged, grinning once more. "Oh! I wanted to ask - can you rec me a 70s album? Like if you could only recommend one album, from the entire decade; I have to write a project on European politics in the 70s, so I figure I gotta got in the headspace, right?"

Maui did a double-take at Penny…and he didn’t like how she was looking at him. It was kind of the way that his mom looked at him when she knew that he was lying. And that was so not someone or something he wanted to compare Penny to, but it was true. She had that same look in her eye that said something like: I know you’re not fine, let’s talk.
It made Maui want to squirm out of his skin.
He didn’t like people looking through him like that, because he didn’t like being not fine. Maui strove for “fine” at all times. He was the epitome of effortlessly chill. Cool as a cucumber. Nothing bothered him. He was go with the flow.
“After…the zombies? Yeah, totally. I kicked some zombie ass. You shoulda been there. It was so dope. I even saved this one chick.”
You couldn’t save Nala Tala, said a voice in his head.
He ignored it.
Well, Penny supposed that she should probably be asking about the zombie thing too - he didn't have any chunks missing, all four limbs in check, so he couldn't have fared too badly, but still. It was a zombie apocalypse (or close enough).
But no, that wasn't it. Penny gave a soft snort, and a roll of her eyes, much closer to the Penny we all know and love. "Well aren't you a hero. Kicking zombie ass and saving chicks." She teased before remembering, right. Sympathetic.
"But uh, I was actually thinking about, like - Peach." She added, voice a little softer. "I guess you've had a busy few months, huh?"

Lady laughed a bit at all that–a modern man. She didn’t know about Penny, but Lady didn’t care a lick for a “modern man”. Not if it meant he moisturized. Women should have soft, lovely hands. Men should have rough, calloused hands. Big and warm. Ones that felt like they could protect you.
But, she wasn’t gonna get into that. She knew that people were gonna have their opinions about those kinds of things these days and there was no use arguin’. Just meant more real men for Lady.
She tilted her head and scrunched up her nose a bit at the question. “Oh, yeah, he’s a cutie, for sure. He’s from Greece–got this lovely kinda accent. But–” she leaned in close, and in her opinion, this was where the information got really juicy, “–I’m pretty sure that he’s gay.”
Ohhhh. Right. Penny really should've seen where this was going.
All the rest of it aside, Penny really did wish she had gotten a look at this guy before she had settled into her desk, partially because she wanted to know what was really going on, but also because, well. She was nosy. She couldn't believe she had missed a new member of staff - and she was going to have to take Lady's word on all of this.
Penny gave a soft hm, lips pursing for a moment. "...Because he's interested in skin care?"
Unwanted Chemistry || Penny & Hiro
hamadaxrobotics:
@proudest-penny
Phase One of Operation Magitech had been a success. One could tell by the fact that there was no longer an evil butterfly overlord ruling over an eternal night. Some would say that she was defeated due to Elena’s scepter or whatever but, honestly? Hiro did really well by testing his magical arm-cannon. It was a great example of the possibilities of magic and technology working to better each other.
Then there was Phase Two. Hiro’s second prototype consisted in a complex chemical mix-and-match artifact, powered by a powerful stone but built upon the principle of his first experiments with Kiki. The idea was that the metallic box-like object would be able to generate a mass, gas or liquid almost instantly, with the right input and mixture of ingredients. The energy generated by the stone was key in the process of mixing chemicals together.
However, chemistry wasn’t Hiro’s specialty. Sure, he was pretty good at it; better than most, even; but not the best. Because of that, he had to be extra careful when testing the thing out.
He should have thought of that before accidentally unleashing an undeterminable mess of chemicals in the laboratory that wound up pushing him right out the window.
“Watch out!”
To stop the fall, though, the student acted quick: He used the box’s currently-limited capabilities and managed to launch a gooey, gum-like substance directly underneath, into… another student. Within seconds, he’d found himself stuck inside a bright pink bubble, formed by the substance he’d tossed, right next to someone else, wondering how he was going to get them out of there in the first place.
Penny was minding her damn business, you know that?
She found that minding your own business, staying in your lane, keeping your nose out, etc etc was the best way to get by in Swynlake, even if sometimes it physically pained her - and if sometimes she kind of failed. She was nosy by nature, alright? She got it from suga mama.
But regardless, for the most part, she tried to just go about her business and leave everyone else to theirs, because otherwise you could get caught up in a whole load of different scary, dangerous, or at least weird situations that you rather wouldn't be in at all.
Apparently, though, it was impossible to stay out of trouble forever.
Penny managed to get a glimpse of the boy falling out the window about three seconds before she discovered she had been... trapped? She had closed her eyes to brace for the impact of someone falling on top of her out of a window, but the impact never came. It was just: pink. Pink everywhere, once she opened her eyes again.
"What. The hell. Is going on." She said, turning to look at the other person she was sharing the weird bubble with. "What did you do!?"

“The best kind of news isn’t in the paper, darlin’,” Lady said, giving Penny a little wink, but then she leaned down some more, so they were just about on the same level.
Last thing she wanted was Apollo figurin’ out that she was talking about him. Not that she was going to say anything mean but that boy had an ego a mile long. Didn’t take much to figure that out.
“We hired a new journalist. I know. I dunno what Morales was thinkin’ either, but–” she lowered her voice even more “–he’s a character. He moisturizes!”
Oh, this was going to be some good gossip - Penny could feel it in her bones. And also, y'know, the way Lady was acting. It was all very secretive. Maybe Penny's desk in what was mostly a public space wasn't the best place for it, but the other didn't seem perturbed, so Penny wasn't gonna argue.
"There's a new journalist?" Penny asked, her eyebrows arching. No one had told her they were getting a new journalist, which was - well, pretty fair to be honest. She was an intern, and part time at that. And she had come straight to her desk this morning, without popping her head in to say hello to the others like she sometimes did, so she had missed this mysterious new journalist.
"He moisturises," She repeated, pausing for a second. "Well; good. Skin care's important y'know. Sounds like a modern man." Penny wasn't beating about the bush, though, a grin curling her lips. "Is he cute?"
