Fashion Spotlight: Laurence & Chico
Designers Laurence & Chico (pictured below) met at Parsons and never looked back. Since launching their brand four years ago, they’ve dazzled the industry with multiple acclaimed collections. Their pieces are bold, vivid, colorful, thoughtful, and intricate all at once. Here’s more about the duo.
Who do you dream of when designing?
No one in particular, really. We take inspiration from our daily lives and the people and things that surround us.
When did you realize you can do this professionally?
Chico: When we first met in design school, we decided to put Laurence’s illustrations on postcards and try to sell them to see if people would resonate with our work. We set up a little table in SoHo in New York, and in the first day we sold out those cards. We then thought we had something special there, and decided to use the same idea but for fashion. So for our clothing, Laurence creates our illustrations and prints and I work on the construction of the garments.
What are you most proud of?
The Laurence & Chico Cafe. We opened the cafe in Vancouver last year. It was a lot of hard work and sleepless nights to get that done, but we’re really happy with it. Everything in the cafe is 100% Laurence & Chico. We even had custom china and light fixtures made.
What do you listen to in the studio?
Chico: Nothing
Laurence: The La La Land Soundtrack
What makes you happy right now?
Pretty things.
If the brand would be a film or a TV series, what would the premise be?
Probably something about a girl or boy in the big city with their first big break in the fashion industry and the glamour of it all. But also about the struggles as well. It may be cliche, but growing up we loved Sex & The City and The Devil Wears Prada as cultural touch points that spoke to those things.

To all you overthinkers (including me): take a breath, it’s going to be fine. I promise
