Research
How hard is it to do a little bit of research? I would have to say that one of the major examples of American laziness (and perhaps the modern world as a whole) is the willingness to believe whatever is advertised to us. A five minute Google search is all it takes for most things, if that.
Take the recent "Kony 2012" trend and the Beats by Dr. Dre. I concede the Kony 2012 movement, but I hate that everyone seems to buy into it just after watching the film. Is that it? A film tells you that you should do something without any real evidence, and you believe it? Try researching the charity before supporting it willy-nilly. If you research first and then support the movement, that's fine. I don't.
The same is true of Dre's Beats. It's amazing to see how much sway marketing has on the masses. Just because a celebrity wears them (I don't think Dre even uses them, himself), they must be good! In fact, they're incredibly overpriced, and if you don't listen to hip-hop or rap, you probably won't like them at all. If everyone who considered buying headphones did a few minutes of research, they would know that. Instead, Dr. Dre's Beats now have a huge market share.
This is for my Design for Media class. We were supposed to make textures that seemed like gradients from black to white. I don't think I did them right, but I kinda like them anyway.
Lucid Dreaming
I'm reading up a little on lucid dreaming, and trying out some things to see if I can take control of my dreams. It seems like nobody is sure about how long it takes to intentionally induce a lucid dream, though. The estimated time is from as soon as 4-5 weeks to a few years. So I guess we'll see. I need to work on dream retention first. I wonder if working on dream retention will help my memory in general?
This is for my Design for Media I class. I took a picture of Carl Sagan, then laid down grids of 1", .5", and .25" squares on separate layers. I then colored each square with the color gray (from a scale of 9 grays) that most dominated that part of the picture. The result was a "pixelated" image. After that, the assignment was to mix the different grid sizes to make the pixelation more interesting.
Project 1 from my Design for Media I class. We were supposed to transition from one mood or idea to a contrasting one.
This one's a happy octopus!
The second is a balloon!
I have to paint three hour-long paintings; here's the first. A banana!
This is an over-the-shoulder shot we had to take for film class. I think I held it pretty steady.
Another for film class: I was supposed to have three shots (whoops!) of an object or objects.
Another video for film class. We had to have two shots of someone walking (pan)and two shots of sitting down and/or standing up (tilt).
This is one of the videos for my film class. I needed two close-ups and a wide shot of a conversation. Hopefully this counts as a conversation. Either I cut off the shots early, or something went wrong somewhere else.
This is actually a friend's video, but it's of me and another friend. Not bad; maybe a little out of focus. And I suggest muting the video.
This is from my Spatial Visualization class. We brought fruit and painted them in class.
Lines
I'm up later than I'd like, trying to draw some lines. I'm supposed to put a word, such as "static" and "vibration" in my audience's head with just lines. Shapes are allowed, kind of, but they can't be the focus of the composition. I don't really get it.
Anyway, the compositions I keep coming up with are extremely...minimal. It makes me think back to what a previous instructor always said about my work; everything I did appeared to have been given little thought and/or effort.
But the opposite is true. Although each mark isn't given much thought, the concept is. I think I'll stick with this way of doing things, unless my instructor tells me otherwise. I should be projecting myself onto the paper or something, not cookie-cutting what creativity I actually have into whatever shape I'm told. If it's garbage, it's garbage. But it'll be my garbage.
I stumbled across this blog, which seems right up my alley. They cover all kinds of indie music, which means something should interest you, if not all of it.
