i like your big sister! she has your same face!
the first time i heard this line in this song, i thought of will and had to write this.
The shift of spring air to summer air was a feeling you adored.
It was the most subtle change, but it brought out the best of everything. The colors and the breeze and the flowers. Everything glowed a little more.
Your world glowed a little more.
Summer meant spending more time with the people you loved. With Will.
You were back home, his home, near Boston to spend some time with his family. This was the third summer now that you've taken the flight with him across the country to see the people he loved the most. His family are people you've also grown to love like they're your own.
It sort of became a tradition to spend the first day as a whole family, playing games in the backyard, catching up with his parents on crazy stories, and falling asleep on the couch while watching a movie.
The second day was always a day for the kids, even though you guys weren't really kids anymore. Whether it was going shopping or just out to lunch, you, Will, and Grace spent as much time as you wanted doing whatever you wanted.
The second day was your favorite day.
You've spent so much of your time with Will, not that you're sick of him, but spending time with Grace added a gentle balance.
The first time you met her, you were the most nervous you've ever been. Yeah, meeting his parents was a scary thought, but meeting his built-in best friend was more daunting. Of course, Will only said great things about her, and you even talked to her over the phone a bunch, but the only thing you wanted to do in person was impress her.
So, when you walked through the door of his family home for the first time and she instantly gave you an overly welcoming hug, you instantly fell in love with her. You still tried to impress her with your taste in music and the movies you liked, but Grace made everything feel simple. You didn't have to impress her because she had already accepted you as her new sister.
Today was the second day.
"Are you guys not hot?" Will ducked his head down to take his hat off and run his fingers through the blonde curls before placing it back where it was.
"You're wearing a hat and jeans." You gesture up and down his body as the three of you walk down the town streets to walk to the same coffee shop you always go to. Ever since you said it was your favorite you had in Boston, the two insisted on taking you there whenever they got the chance to.
"The weather app said it would be cloudy." He complained, which earned a laugh from his sister beside you.
"When has the weather app ever been right?" She shakes her head and adjusts the strap of her purse on her shoulder. You peek over to her when she speaks, silently admiring how put together she looked despite the humidity and heat. You wore a similar outfit she did, but you didn't feel like you looked as chic as she did. "Yesterday was supposed to rain, remember? And did it?"
You laugh and lean against Will's arm in a teasing way before he reaches out to grab the handle of the cafe door.
"That could have been a coincidence." He shakes his head, clearly annoyed he's wrong while the two of you walk through it.
You were instantly met with the familiar scent of espresso and the sight of perfectly frosted sugar cookies the second you stepped through the door. Small bouquets decorated every wooden table, adding the perfect amount of color even though the walls were covered in windows allowing the blue sky to shine through.
"You want the usual?" You smiled at the words your boyfriend asked simply because he knew you too well.
"Mhm," You nod, bringing your attention back to the baked goods in front of you. "And a cookie."
You pointed to the cookie decorated to look like a lemon slice.
"They added that one this spring, it's the best thing I've ever had here." Grace added, smiling the same way Will does when he's excited.
You smiled at her when she said she was probably going to get it too, and smiled even harder when she said you'd have to send a picture to their mother, Colleen, to show her what she's missing out on.
Will ended up paying, like he always did, and waited for the drinks and treats while you and Grace sat at the table on the outside patio you've sat at for the past three years.
"I know I say this every time, but he's so in love with you it makes me sick sometimes." She pushes her sunglasses back onto the bridge of her nose and twists the ring on her finger.
"He's adorable," You laugh and glance back into the cafe to see him shifting his weight on both of his feet while he waits. "You should have seen how excited he was for today. He's been waiting all week."
"He texted me, maybe four days ago, telling me all the things he wanted to make sure you get to do before leaving." She leaned in closer and pulled up the text messages between the two of them.
In the same old Will fashion, he sent multiple small text messages in a row, stating everything he wanted to do. Your cheeks grew red at some of the things he texted. The last one stated: "a night in the city. without you preferably."
"He hates the lack of attention he gets when you're here." You laugh and lean back in your chair.
"Oh, I can tell. He shoots daggers at me from across the room when he's decided I've had enough time with you."
"You guys may look the same, but no one can be as clingy Will can." You joke and tuck your hair behind your ears just as he pushes the door open with his back, holding a drink carrier and a brown paper bag.
"You don't have to stop talking about me now that I'm here." He teases and takes a seat next to you.
"Why would we be talking about you?" Grace furrowed her eyebrows and stuck her hand into the bag to fish out her cookie.
"Because you're my sister and I know that look." He shoves her shoulder slightly.
He was right. Grace had a smirk on her lips, giving away that you were indeed talking about him.
"And you're being too quite." He looks at you and gives a playful wink.
"I just want my coffee." You flick his cap and reach for the iced latte he was passing to you.
"The barista in there asked if you two planned your outfits." He added whilst handing you the cookie you asked for.
You looked at the blonde girl in front of you, noticing you were indeed wearing similar outfits. It was summer and you both wore an outfit pretty much everyone would wear in weather like this. Jean shorts and a flowy white top. When you locked eyes with her, the two of you laughed in unison.
"Am I missing something?" Will looked slightly uncomfortable as he glanced between the two of you with his own coffee in hand.
"No." You shake your head and place your hand on his knee, patting it slightly.
"Here, smile!" Grace held her cookie in front of the camera and gestured for Will to lean close to you.
His hand fell on your thigh, still sending butterflies through you even though he's been doing that for years, as he leaned closer to you. With your heads pressed together, a big smile on your faces, and Grace's cookie in the shot, she took the photo to send to her parents.
As soon as the phone is down, you break off a piece of cookie, holding out to your boyfriend. He took it without question, and the two of you took a bite of it at the same time.
"Holy-" You pause and finish chewing. "That is really good."
"See! I told you." Grace nodded and took a bite of her own. "The best."
You nodded at her words, placing the cookie back down on the napkin in front of you. Well, that was until Will reached for it, clearly trying to get another bite.
"No," You slapped his hand away.
"Okay, wow." He held his hands up in surrender.
"I'll be back." Grace gestured to her phone, showing that she was getting a call. She quickly took a sip of her coffee before walking around the corner of the cafe.
Your eyes followed her as she disappeared from view, and when you couldn't see her anymore, you turned to face Will.
"What?" You furrow your eyebrows when you see him already staring at you.
"I just love that you love her." He grabs at your hand, holding it gently while keeping a smile on his face. "And that she feels the same."
"She's so cool." You shrug. "You definitely missed out on that gene."
"Okay, what?" He threw his other hand up in an irritated motion.
Will rolled his eyes and took a sip of his coffee. Every time you were with him at a cafe, you always admired the fact you got an iced drink and he always got hot. It was a subtle difference you loved. It just made sense.
"She always tells me how much she loves you and wishes she saw you more."
"Really?" Your head tilts to the side at his words.
"Of course." He nods and shrugs like it was obvious.
"I love her, too." You smile, knowing how important it was for Will to hear those words. He always said, since you two started dating, that his family loving you and you loving them in return was something really important to him. It was hard not to love the Smith family.
"I love that she's cooler than you and has your same face."
That got another eye roll.
