I'm getting slack with these write-ups, I used to do them the very next day but these days my employer actually expects me to do work...
Leon and RichP trade wins all night and end up having to share the honours. Leon had recurring problems with his loose wheel, needs to try and find a replacement set for next time.
Keith found a bit of pace with his GT40 and combined that with his steady performance becomes a serious contender for a podium place at the end of the year.
Jason stole all the attention with the most spectacular chip explosion ever witnessed. Flames spouting from his interior almost six inches high (*maybe) with a burnt electrical stench that I'm sure is still lingering in the hall now.
RichF grabs the bonus point to tie on points with Keith for the night.
Five racers improve on their personal best laptimes with Leon the first to set a sub eight second lap.
Richard has opened up a comfortable lead very early in this class and Keith looks strong for a podium finish come December too. But that is still a long way off for both of them but the good start should keep them motivated.
Relatively quiet turnout for us lately left us with only three racers on track at the same time. This allowed everyone a bit more room and a chance to stretch their legs. Would we see the lap times tumbling?
Leon took things easy at first, protecting the car and saving the tyres. In contrast both Mike and Clive struggled from the start. Mike's Avant Slot Pescarolo would suddenly stall on track for no reason and Clive's tyres on his Avant Slot Peugeot finally gave up any grip they had left to give.
Both switched to backup cars but Keith had already taken full advantage and had stretched out a few laps gap. It was Mike who took the fight to Keith, outpacing him but struggling to stay in the slot to make any headway. In the end Keith was able to maintain his advantage for the remaining ten minutes.
Mike solved his issues with the Pescarolo, it was a loose top hat on his guide wire. The car was completely transformed but it still lacked pace when compared with his backup car, a Ninco Audi R18.
Jason was rocking a new Avant Slot Mirage GR8 which had great straight line pace, but as everyone else finds, the faster motors also provide too much braking strength around the hairpins, causing them to loose any time they gain from the straight. At least Jason was able to match the pace of the front runners, if he can tame the car in the tricky sections he should be able to stay there.
A few errors crept into Keith's driving during his final race and he gave up the lead to Clive after five minutes. Clive settled down and rolled off some quick laps without any mistakes consistently. This gave no one a chance to catch him giving Clive his first heat victory in LMPs. Clive is starting to make a bit of a habit of setting faster laps in a loan car, as he promptly set the fastest lap of the night with an impressive 7.035. Leon didn't like this and gave up on looking after his car and started hunting for fastest lap glory.
In the races final heat, in the final minute, Mike had crept up on Leon as both sat on the lead lap, Mike holding a small fuel advantage. Leon had to increase the gap to give himself enough time for a splash and dash. He just about managed it as he exited the pits with Mike coming down the main straight close behind.
With enough time left just for two more laps both racers couldn't afford to make any mistakes, and they didn't. Leon just about edging the win from Mike as he was pushed hard all the way to the flag.
Leon takes the win but he did have to work a lot harder for it than anyone thought. Keith and Mike share second place as both made the most of their issues and picked up the points where the could. Clive just pips Jason into fourth place, courtesy of his heat victory.
With the extra space on track everyone manages to set their personal best fastest laps. Some great improvement from Mike and Jason but Clive storms up the leaderboard with his 7.035. Leon using that as motivation coupled with a quiet track to break the current track record held by Rick which was a 6.860 and now stands as 6.769.
Not much change to the overall standings, only RichP falls a number of places due to missing this round and both Mike and Keith continue to be tied for points. Sooner or later one of them is going to break the deadlock!
Round 3 of our Truck championship saw 6 racers turn out. This allowed us to race 15 minute heats with 4 on the grid and 2 marshals.
We had the digital gremlins generate some ID transfers (not all Gareth - in one heat Keith had 2 extra laps and Gareth was marshalling!)
I have investigated the lap times and found that although two heat results were affected it did not affect the overall positions at the end of the night.
Fortunately SSDC records every lap time and I was able to zoom in on the laps with dodgy fastest laps and find the real fastest laps.
The track was actually slower than the previous two rounds so nobody was able to improve on their fastest laps although the lap stats show that Keith and Jason are both improving their laps per minute as their battle for second place in the championship really hots up. The pair of them have been neck and neck for 2 rounds but Keith edges ahead by a single championship point in round 3 - these Trucks are giving us some really close and entertaining racing.
Rich P had better watch out as Keith and Jason's rivalry may knock him off top spot before too long - the lap stats make very interesting reading.
Rick still holds the fastest lap record but Jason is a strong bet to challenge that time as the nights warm up. Rich P continues to demonstrate that fastest lap doesn't always mean the win as he was only 5th fastest in Round 2 and 4th fastest in Round 3 - he just stays in the slot more.
Heat 1 saw Rich P take a comfortable 5 lap win from RichF with Clive and Gareth loccked in their own little battle - both finishing on the same lap. Clive actually had a lap gifted by a Gareth ID loss which edged it for him - but that didn't affect the overall night's results.
Heat 2 saw Rich P up against Keith, Jason and RichF. Keith equalled Rich P's 80 laps from heat 1 but Rich P put in 82 to take his second win. Jason and RichF both finished on lap 77 with Jason half a lap ahead.
Heat 3 saw an ID loss from Gareth gift 3 laps to Jason (yes 3) which allowed Jason to win the heat with the same lap count as Keith who can feel aggrieved at being robbed of the heat win (but again - this did not end up skewing the overall results).
Heat 4 and again Keith and Rich P were locked in battle with Keith only a few seconds behind at the end.
Heat 5 saw Keith gifted 2 laps from an ID loss - this time from Clive. But as keith won the heat 4 laps in front of RichF it made no difference.
The final heat saw a gift fest as Jason received 2 laps and Clive received one lap both from Gareth despite his braid change - we wonder whether his lighting upgrade may be messing with his chip. Jason was still 2 laps behind Rich P and the lap differences were enough for the gifted laps to make no difference.
Gareth's ID loss issues aside - the racing was fair, fun and at times very close. These Trucks are very close in performance (they tend to gather momentum rather than accelerate) and this can make overtaking manoeuvres last 4 or 5 laps!!! Taking these Trucks wheel-to-wheel through our twin R1 hairpins is a sight to see and amazingly they seem to fit without causing too many crashes despite their girth.
Results and stats and stuff is below.
Very late with the results for this race sorry, thought I had posted them last week.
No idea what happened but someone won, me, and no doubt Gareth had a mechanical issue or six at some point.
Looks like RichF, Jason and Mike got into it, with RichF and Jason tied for the last podium step. Mike finishes behind them but bags the bonus point.
Most of the crowd improve on their personal bests with RichP getting to within a couple of hundredths of Leon's previous best, only for Leon to extend that another tenth later on.
The battle for third place looks like where the action is going to be, with Mike, RichF and the rookie Jason all looking strong.
GT40's Round 2 very nearly didn't happen as the British obsession with the weather and the media frenzy over the "Beast from the East" (a little snow from Siberia apparently) caught a hold on our Whatsapp group and stories of deep snow and packs of wild wolves started to proliferate.
Keith and RichP were a little bemused as the club and surrounding areas was completely snow free and yet reports were coming in of 12ft snow drifts topped with hungry Polar Bears were coming in from all directions.
Then a message from Mike (who ironically has nearly the furthest to travel) asking where everybody was (he was at the club waiting) galvanised Keith and RichP to jump in their cars and join him (being careful to avoid the wandering herds of Caribou obviously).
So three of us turned up - enough to fill a podium is enough to race!!! We ran 3 five minute practice races to make sure the ice was cleared from the track and decided to run 3 proper 15 minute races using shouted track calls rather than have a marshal. With the track calls we stopped on a shout, when the car was replaced the others ran for 3 seconds before the crashed car restarted. It seemed a fair penalty for crashing. The lap counts were down because the clock was still running but it seemed an OK compromise.
Mike and RichP were neck and neck in all 3 races with Keith a little off the pace but still under 9 seconds. Mike was actually edgiing RichP on lap times in most cases but RichP used his fuel more wisely and caught Mike in his burn-more-fuel-to-catch-up trick. So all 3 races finished in the same order but each time Mike was less than 9 seconds behind RichP in a 15 minute race.
So here are the results. No bonus point for fastest non-podium driver because everybody was on the podium (once we cleared the Penguins off).
So for now Rich P, Mike and Keith are romping off into the distance. But it's early days yet.
On a night where the flipper before the last corner caused many problems the result was still a surprise turn of luck.
Highlights:
The lane changer before the last corner had a flipper that would not stay straight for long and liked to drift to the change position, this caused many a collision going into the final bend. Flipper will need to be replaced or at least repaired.
The guide blade on Clive's Avant Slot Peugeot catastrophically failed so he borrowed Mike's Ninco Audi... and promptly went on to drive it faster than Mike! He even set his fastest lap to date and this proved crucial as Clive took the bonus point.
Leon and Rick were shaping up to be the main protagonists and in their first race together Rick stole the advantage by finishing the race three laps ahead.
Keith was running well right up to the point his crown gear started slipping on the axle, costing him some valuable points.
RichP was not enjoying himself, lack of sleep and back problems were keeping his spirits low and having to fight his car around the track was not helping him to unwind. This kept him off the pace early on but he managed to dig deep and find some performance before the end.
The final race was one last chance for Leon to beat Rick and at least tie for first place overall. A change of strategy to save fuel saw Leon just one lap ahead going into the final two minutes. Rick put it all out there to reel Leon back in but a few spectacular crashes saw him drop further back and no chance to take the win.
As they all rounded the last corner to begin their final laps, Rick had one more excursion into the gravel trap which allowed RichP into second place who surprised everyone by creeping up to be right behind Rick at the end. Rick chased him down hard but couldn't catch him with RichP taking second and crucially another point off Rick. All this excitement gifted Leon the nights win.
Leon has a small lead after two rounds, but the better fuel performance of Rick's car showed he should still be a contender by the end of the year. RichP is close behind in second whilst there is a large gap to both Mike and Keith who are tied for third.
Leon finally joins the ranks of a sub seven lap and gets very close to taking the track record, but it's still not enough. Everyone, with the exception of Keith, set their fastest laps tonight. Clive putting in his best performance, in Mike's car, to tie RichP for third on a literal 2-for-1 time!
Not much difference at the top of total laps covered, proving that no one is really out of it in this class. A lot is still going to be dependent on reliability.
This Tuesday 13th Feb saw the start of the second rounds of our 2018 classes with the Trucks carried over from 2017's experimental half season and now given a whole season of what is turning out to be exciting and close racing.
Round 1 saw only 5 racers for various reasons but Round 2 saw 8 racers including the return of Rick - welcome back buddy.
Race 1 saw RichP set down a benchmark 55 laps in a 10 minute race without fuel simulation. RichF followed close behind with 53 whilst Jason, James and Gareth finished within 2 laps of each other - close racing indeed.
James was struggling with handling all night which was a shame because his Truck is actually one of the fastest.
Race 2 saw the return of Rick and he promptly matched RichP's 55 laps from heat 1 and took the win from RichF who pt in 54 - one more than the previous heat. Keith was showing some promise on 52 laps - his quiet and accident-free style making him something of a silent assassin. Clive brought up the rear with a Truck that is simply off the pace - it's not his driving, it's clearly the Truck which seems a little underpowered and crying out for a motor swap.
Race 3 saw the previous 2 heat winners pitted against each other and this time Rick was down a lap at 54 and RichP was up a lap at 56. Keith again put in 52 slightly ahead of James who was quick all night but too fond of the armco.
And so the heats continued in a similar vein (with a notable win for the Silent Assassin when Rick and RichP were on marshalling duties) until all 8 were done and the podium revealed itself as follows:
RichP cements his Round 1 win with another victory. Rick and RichF score well pushing RichP's early rivals down the finishing order.
Jason is fastest non-podium racer so takes the bonus point to match Keith's tally. Jason was a mere 2 thousandths of a second behind Rick who posted fastest lap of the evening.
The overall championship standings are as follows:
RichP, Clive and Gareth fail to improve their lap times from Round 1 and RichP tumbles from fastest to only 4th fastest - but it was his low deslot count that brought him a clean sweep of heat wins in Round 2 - you don't have to be fastest over a single lap to win - you have to be consistently fast but not so fast that you waste time being marshalled.
*This may or may not be the Silent Assassin’s Truck.
First time for Pantyffynnon Slot Car Club to be running a Carrera class with the majority of members showing up with some new cars or two.
Leon takes the inaugural win closely followed by RichP and Mike who finished on the podium, with James just a hairs width behind Mike for fourth but takes the bonus point to stay level. The rest of the pack are just a few tenths further back, but it looks like these Carrera cars need plenty of running to loosen everything up.
This table should hopefully show some real close results by the end of the year.
Still a close class as there is less than 6 tenths between first and eighth place. Previous classes have certainly shown bigger gaps.
Spin those gears up, run the motor in and knock some time off your PB's
Our track Fflatout Ffynnon is getting on now as it reached it's one year birthday. It was as if it knew becuase it threw a birthday strop and we had our first short on the track as we tried to get the night started. It took us a while but we found the culprit and rushed to squeeze in all the nights races.
Highlights:
Gareth picked up a 5 second time penalty for an unsafe release from the pitlane and after serving the stop & go, very nearly did the same thing again, to the same driver.
Leon picked up a 5 second time penalty for jumping the start and shortly after one of his rear wheels came loose.
Jason seemed to be suffering more than most with the bumps in the track, may need to reduce the diameter of his front wheels a little and try a bit more weight up front.
RichP had a perfect nights racing winning all of his heats and managing the keep it in the slot much longer than everyone else.
Keith, Mike and James traded positions all night with Keith pulling it out of the bag to come out on top.
Despite finishing one place behind, Mike manages to keep pace with Kieth by virtue of the bonus point for fastest lap of non podium finishers.
Leon made too many mistakes to match RichP tonight but he did manage the fastest lap, meaning the problem isn't with his car! RichP is only a tenth behind and Mike isn't too far off either. Clive surprises with the fourth fastest time whilst the bottom four have some room to improve in order to bring their personal best closer to the top.
The opening round of LMPs was a continuation of last years smash fest. Low slung prototypes bounced off each other and the barriers all night.
Highlights:
Leon had a car that was missing laps in an early race costing him some valuable points and a potential nights win.
Jason begins his first full season of racing and won a heat convincingly with a difficult car to drive.
Clive suffered guide wire problems on a few occasions, preventing him from picking up some points.
Both Gareth and RichP struggled with their Truspeed controllers, as their cars surged forward in the braking zones.
The nights final race had RichP leading with a minute to go. Then a massive pit lane pile up to knocked him back a lap or two and handed the race win to Leon, who was surprised to see the win managed to bring his total points into line with RichP as they both share the first step on the podium.
The outright win for RichP was cruelly taken away by some bad luck.
It's as close as you can get at the top of the table after the first round. This class is a battle of attrition, who can keep their car in one piece the longest!
The fastest lap markers have been laid down and we should see some new faces moving their way up as they gain more experience with wrestling the faster cars around Fflatout Ffynnon. Last year saw two racers with sub seven second laps and this class boasts the club track record as Rick Dastardly hit a 6.860. Can anyone topple that this year?
RichP and Leon are even tied on the total laps covered, it could be another long year and a championship that is decided as much by luck as it is speed.
Following last week's open-to-all-classes testing and fettling session; this week saw the PSCC 2018 season start in earnest. 5 racers turned up with apologies from the rest (come on guys - we know it was cold but the roads were dry and the beer was warm :-)
With such a small field and knowing the Trucks are fairly easy to drive without deslotting (something we comprehensively DISPROVED during the evening!!!!) we decided to run with a single marshal.
So everybody got a good workout in the end as the close racing resulted in a few multiple pile-ups and log jams.
Anyway - with so few racers and so much time we decided to run 5 heats of 10 minutes followed by another 5 heats as 5 minute sprints.
Race 1 saw Keith marshalling while the rest raced for Trucking Glory. Rich P tied up the first heat with 52 laps leaving Jason 4 laps down, Clive a further lap down and Gareth a bit further back with some power issues. After changing braids and applying some Inox and later resetting his partly dislodged rear axle - Gareth got back on the pace but not until mid way through the evening.
Although Clive came 3rd his truck was fast and was later to set fastest lap twice before Rich P pipped him by a tenth. Clive has been fettling and all those little edges are producing some rapid lap times.
Race 2 was Clive's turn to marshal and Rich P put in a 51 lap win with Jason, Keith AND Gareth ALL 3 laps back - all on lap 48 and all within a few seconds of each other. These Trucks are producing some very close battles.
Race 3 saw an upset. Jason was on marshal duties and Keith stormed to a 52 lap win with Clive in 2nd on 49 laps and Rich P third on the same lap as Clive. So the dominant Storm Trooper Truck (our 2017 champion) wasn't having it all it's own way by any means.
Race 4 and Rich P as Marshal saw a great opportunity for a points grab which Keith duly did with another 52 lapper but Jason was on the same lap and only 3.5 seconds behind. Clive swept into 3rd and Gareth's axle chose this heat to Pop - but at least that solved Gareth's speed problems for the rest of the evening.
Race 5 and Gareth as marshal. Rich P stung by his previous result and Keith's better lap tally pulled out all the stops and kept it in the slot to record a 54 lap victory. Keith - Mr Consistent - recorded another 52 lapper.
So at the half way point it was looking like RichP on top with Keith slightly edging Jason for the second podium spot - but would the sprints cause an upset?
Races 6-10 were the same order as the first 5 just shorter and it was amazing how quickly those 5 minutes passes compared to the 10 minute heats - most of us could swear they felt like 1/3 of the previous duration but they were definitely 1/2.
Race 6 saw Rich P win but Clive pushed Jason down to 3rd with a thrilling same-lap finish.
Race 7 saw Keith hold on to second with Jason closing fast on the last bend - a final gap of 0.7 seconds separating the pair.
Race 8 and the Storm Trooper sealed another victory putting the win out of reach of the rest. Clive once again took second - this time from Keith. When Clive keeps his head and stays in the slot he is a very rapid racer.
So at this point it looked like Keith was a sure bet for 2nd.
But in race 9 with Rich P out of the running on marshalling duties - Jason took the win from Keith and Gareth took 3rd a full 3 laps in front of Clive.
So with one heat remaining Rich P was uncatchable but Keith was only 2 points in front of Jason meaning he would have to finish no worse than one position behind Jason to seal sole custody of 2nd place overall. But Jason had other ideas and, from his pole position start stormed into the lead and stayed there whilst Rich P and Keith tried to hunt him down. In the end Jason took the win and Rich P took second having been wheel to wheel with Keith for the last 3 laps until Keith had an off and another off trying to catch up.
So in the end Keith took a well earned second place but had to share it with Jason.
Clive was fastest non-podium racer so took the bonus point and was one of only two who manage to break the 10 second barrier on what was a cold and slightly damp feeling track.
Looking at the fastest lap time it is good to see that there is about a 3.5% speed difference between the fastest and slowest time. That is our closest spread of lap times and promises a season with some very close racing and some very tight results.
A new year is upon us and it's time to collect some club funds, we are in urgent need of a new C7042 powerbase so if anyone is able to pay me via paypal that would be great.

There are two options, an annual fee or a race night fee:
Annual Fee
You can pay a one off annual fee of £40. This covers you for every race night in the year.
Race Night Fee
Alternatively you can pay £1 to race each night. It should be easy to make sure you have £1 on you!
Social Club Membership Fee
There is an annual membership fee of £5 to be members of Pantyffynnon Social Club. This is not compulsory so you are not obligated to become a member. Please consider that we are extremely lucky to get the hall for free. The more racers we have as members of the Social Club will give our own club a greater presence. There is also the added benefit that if you are a Social Club member you can book the hall for your own use.
The final round of British GT and our final round of 2017. Christmas spirit was in full flight at the club as everyone brought along a selection of food and nibbles, chief among them was the mountain of savory eggs.
There was still a championship to be settled with both Leon and RichP in contention for the overall win. Recent problems at previous rounds had denied RichP taking the victory sooner, but testing at home showed no more signs of troubles. Leon wasn't taking anything for granted and in the first race of the night set a blistering pace right from the start with RichP driving hard to stay in touch.
Less than five minutes into the first race the championship was effectively over... RichP's dreaded surging and erratic control problems returned, costing him the race and allowing several racers to jump ahead of him. His problems persisted all night and stole any chance of an exciting climax to what has been one of the clubs best years to date.
Leon is gifted the win by fate and takes the overall class win. RichP's woes continued and resulted in quite a few racers taking points off him on the nights racing, so much so that four racers were able to score equal points to give us a fantastic four way tie for 2nd place on the night. The podium steps were creaking tonight, but it was mostly related to savory eggs.
RichP at least picks up the bonus point for fastest lap as he failed to finish on the podium, but this didn't really help him as tonight's score ended up being one of his dropped rounds. Clive and Jason round out the table, with Jason testing out a gorgeous TVR 400R, a front motored slot car that is always difficult to handle with too much weight up front and not enough at the rear. Never the less he did manage to string together a cracking lap time.
Jason's lap was good enough to launch him all the way up to fifth place with the top four all setting sub eight second times.
The final table shows the last three rounds where RichP lost the championship, failing to podium in two of them. Leon holds on all year to eventually take the lead at the final round with Keith coming in at third place with an impressive seven podium finishes overall.
The clubs best year to date with regards to attendance and the quality of laughs we shared throughout. I hope you all have a great Christmas and we shall meet in the new year with a couple of new classes that look set to be even closer.
Merry Christmas you filthy animals...
Not even Santa's elves could fix RichP's controller problems:
Tonights LMP racing was cancelled due to the majority of racers being busy on Christmas duties or just burnt out from all the furious late night shopping.
The final results are:
Leon takes the win followed by RichP. Rick does indeed manage to grab third place on the podium, thanks to the fact that Keith wasn't able to score any more points. Rick deserved at least a podium for this class having surely been able to win it if he hadn't have been so busy doing some DIY house reconstruction.
Clive and Mike finish on equal points, both enjoying some visits to the podium this year. Everyone else just had the odd stab at the Prototypes here and there.
Rick finishes with the fastest lap for the class that is also the current lap record on Fflatout Ffynnon. RichP is the only sub 7 driver with James cruelly perched on a 7 flat. I'm sure hes happy he knocked Leon down to fourth place however.
This class returns for 2018, see you all in the new year when all the scores get reset.
Another late write up sorry, too busy in work these days. As we enter the final two races of British GTs the overall winner can go only two ways.
Leon needs to win both of these final rounds whilst RichP only needs to take victory in one of them. In the previous round 9, both of the main contenders had disasters with their cars. Leon eventually discovered and repaired his problem ready for tonight, it was a broken ferrite man leg. Whilst for RichP the pain continued as half way through tonight's races his car problems came back worse than ever, making it impossible for him to race with.
RichF took full advantage of RichP's difficulties and raced his way to second place on the night. Keith was as solid as ever with his Aston Martin that seems to be getting quicker each night. James and Mike battled each other for positions with James coming out the eventual winner, one more point to his name.
Jason showed he is settling in nicely with an impressively quick lap time, as soon as he starts stringing the quick laps together hes going to catch a few people off guard. Clive struggled with various problems and experimented with a few cars so was unable to take any points from the others.
Leon takes the win he desperately needed to stay in the fight, the big question is can RichP sort out all his gremlins ready for the final round?
Leon finds a couple of tenths to extend his lead at the top of the fastest lap leaderboard. Jason is the only other racer to improve on their laptime in Round 10 and he jumps up to 7th place overall with a great 8.285 lap.
Here is the table as it stands before the final round. Both Leon and RichP could finish on 85 points if they take the final nights victory, whoever comes second will finish on 84 points or worse if guys like RichF and Keith can get into the mix.
Whoever wins we are guaranteed to finish 2017 with a Christmas cracker!
The final race of the class and little movement to be gained in the overall standings, but that didn't mean the racing was any less competitive!
Leon takes the win with RichP close behind as always. RichF takes a podium finish having learned to get as much performance as possible from his Scalextric Mustang. James and Mike tie for fourth place in the battle of the Pioneer cars with Clive suffering from loose tyres on his Mustang that really held him back. Jason was happy to run a GT car around to gain some valuable track experience for next year.
The leaderboard is now closed for the Muscle Cars and this class will be taking a break next year. RichP holding top spot just three thousandths of a second ahead of Leon.
Leon takes the overall class win and manages to achieve a perfect score of 90 points. RichP and Keith both finish on the podium with Keith's regular attendance and consistent driving keeping him out of reach from the rest of the pack, he also managed four podium finishes too. RichF and Rick were Keith's only real challengers but both suffered from missing a few race nights as did everyone else further down the table.
