Thoughts on Still Loving DWP

One of the things I love more and more with each passing year about The Devil Wears Prada, is that it is such a limited and contained universe. It’s not a series with seasons and episodes, there isn’t even a sequel. Sure there are the books but within fandom they’re only rarely referenced and almost the entirety of fandom rests on the onscreen developing relationship between movie!Miranda and movie!Andy.

I am so glad there is no [pretending the sequel never happened] or [pre season 4] or even [post ep for “Mirror, mirror“]. This is the only fandom I’m in for which the source material is so limited and so coherent, where there was, consequently, never a moment of “the show runners f-ed it up“ or “well, that killed my favorite headcanon.“ All of which is of course also fine, not necessarily enjoyable, but it can sure lead to a fandom rich with yummy fanworks. But it means for me, that it is the only fandom I’m in where I have no negative feelings about the source material whatsoever. Not that the movie is perfect, but that I never felt let down, cheated or messed with and it makes it such a sweet fandom to return to every few years whenever I’m sort of lost and looking.

Helped tremendously of course by the fact that the amount of quality fic still easily available is so big and still growing. I think the fact that there is only one movie actually makes it easier to dip into or return to as a writer as well. Once you know the movie, you know the movie, you’re familiar with the characters and the relationships, not to mention that rewatching it will only take 1 hour and 49 minutes. Perfect for a lazy afternoon or a sweet evening. I think the limitation works in its favor.
