okay listen to me and listen to me very carefully here anon. Genma x Iruka is a realy sacred thing to me because its stupid and devoid of any reasons but also kinda not. Take my hand i shall take you on a journey together

Genma is a character that from what we have seen of him he takes exacly 0 things seriously but is also deboted to the job which makes him a walking contradiction. Relax and at ease in a children killng echither competion but Will Scold Kakashi Hatake For Being Late. a friend of mine described him as "an onion that has no core" once and it has been burned into my mind ever since.

Now we hace Iruka, who by all intends a d porpuses takes things VERY and i mean VERY seriously. Be his academy sensei job or the safety of his students, to the point where he can and has contradicted the hokage and jounin about the chunin exams.

A tokujetsu jounin who takes nothing seriously but is deboted to his job regardless and a man who takes his job so seriously he can make his only job as a chunin academy sensei falter. Now maje them kiss and you have the perfect recipe for me

and you will say dear anon, "isnt that just kkiru to their very basics?" and i will say No. Well, kinda but not.

Because you see, dear anon, Genma shiraniu is a bit of whatever you want him to be outside of this very core of him, because of the aforementioned onion with no core, unlike kakashi who is an onion because he has many layers but they all lead to a center, more like a letuce if you will. Genma could not give less of a fuck about Irukas kids but he will still twach them if he gets asked to, unlike kakashi who will in fact care very Deeply about it.

to me their dynamic would be sort of a game of pull the string. Genma teases Iruka relentlessly cus he wants to get those pants off, and iruka will get mad because He Will Not Take Him Seriously, and in the end they care for echother in their own sick little twisted game of "thats the fucker that i hated fucked one time and i got attached to" for iruka and for genma "hey thats the pretty sensei. gonna annoy him for my own amusement( <- he cares for iruka deeply but not in the traditional sense cus genma will never be traditional.)"

Personally I see their most plausible dynamic as long time friends turned fuck buddies turned back to friends with both in mytual agreement they love someone else and r doing this to satisfy that craving of contact shinobi have and they sort of just became very good friends in the process.

See because the implication of that frame with the Third Hokage frowning while watching Iruka open himself and befriending Mizuki is him seeing Mizuki's ill intentions with Iruka very early on but never acting to prevent it from escalating further summarizes his character so well

thinking about anbu prankster Iruka going "pspspspsps" when looking for the ANBU Cat and Cat always appearing in half a second clearly flustered and his ears red from blushing saying "I told you to stop doing that!"

Headcanon where, when Iruka and Mizuki were kids, they would train Mizuki's genjutsu skills together. They stopped for a short time when Mizuki 'accidentally' triggered a particular technique that caused Iruka to relive the Kyuubi attack, which became so severe that an ANBU member who happened to be nearby had to intervene to break him out of it.

However, this specific genjutsu-free period didn't last too long. At a time when Iruka was struggling badly with his grief, he asked Mizuki if he could cast a genjutsu where he could see his parents. He knew it would hurt, and it would make him feel worse than before but dammit, he missed them. Trying not to dwell on that, on the bright side it would count as training for both of them!

Two particular months when Iruka's pranks were hell on earth for the ANBU that had in-village patrols raised suspicion that something might be going on with him, but these two were sneaky enough to not be caught.

That was until Iruka not only wasn't breaking out of the genjutsu on his own, but Mizuki couldn't do it for him either, then he had to look for some close-by ANBU, the same from before, which appeared almost instantly when Mizuki started to panic. It was one with silver hair who was such a stuck-up but clearly a prodigy, and to their surprise, the ANBU couldn't break it either. Only when they got Kurenai in on the issue were they able to find the root of the problem, the reason they weren't able to dispel the genjutsu was that Iruka himself was strengthening it.

Mizuki got chewed up by Kurenai, who remarked that only because she specialized in genjutsu and had practice in T&I was she able to stop something like that, especially since Iruka seemed to almost perfect the basics of shinobi tactics for his subconscious to do this. Verbally bruising the younger teen's ego and the fleeting pride he felt at the chance of doing a jutsu this strong without meaning to.

When Iruka woke up in the hospital, both he and Mizuki got a tongue slash from Asuma (who was filled in by Kurenai), arguing that he told them to stop this training since the first incident and trying to not fuss over Iruka's mental well-being, then another tongue slash from the Third Hokage the same day. Ah, but Iruka was told to meet him for tea to discuss this further once he was in the right mind and discharged by the medi-nins. Iruka groaned.

Mizuki glared at the floor. Of course Iruka gets a tea meeting with the Hokage after also screwing up.

That day ended with Mizuki promising Iruka he wouldn't pull him under a genjutsu ever again, or at least nothing like that.

Part of Iruka couldn't help but feel disappointed that he now won't see his parents as lively again.

I don't understand people who dislike Iruka. I have a friend who says "he barely does anything" and "he's not the best shinobi" (though we obviously can't compare him to Kakashi, for example). But honestly, the guy did so much. I feel like, even with the idea of being acknowledged by Sasuke, Naruto wouldn't be who he is if it weren't for Iruka, and that carries a lot of weight.

I mean, the kid had a goal, okay? But at least he had an adult who guided him and showed him affection. They make that especially clear with Gaara, whose own “Iruka” ended up becoming someone who literally told him: “Deep down in my heart, I hate you.”

I know Iruka isn't the coolest guy around (HE IS) or anything, but narratively he's really important. I still think he never had any personal motives for being kind to Naruto (unlike Kakashi or Jiraiya), and he genuinely became a good older brother figure to him.
