Kakashi, to Tenzou&Iruka: So, how did you two became friends? Iruka: It happened when you sent Tenzou to give me the report of one of your mission and I thanked every Deity I know because their writing is legible and the report wasn't like a shit on fire. Tenzou: And then I found out that he's the famous chunnin who's not afraid of yelling at you, so I asked him out to dinner. Gai, behind Tenzou&Iruka: *Gives thumbs up to Kakashi 'cuz their matchmaking plan worked*

Kakashi *who knows exactly what he did*: huh, interesting. Also, very rude. My feelings are hurt Tenzou.

Tenzou: You have feelings?

Kakashi:...no, but if i did they would be hurt.

Tenzou: I’m not scared of him.

Chewing on Mizuki again. The anime goes all "Ooh he always loved to see Iruka miserable" and as cartoonishly evil as that is I do think it offers an interesting place for the cracks to start forming in their relationship. Iruka's parents have just died. He's miserable and grieving and all alone, an orphan in a village that famously mistreats and neglects orphans, and he would have so many perfectly justifiable reasons to be angry and to demand better for himself but instead of any of that he's just. Smiling. And laughing. He's still pulling goofy pranks and being the class clown and trying to entertain the people around him, even though he has to be in pain.

Maybe Mizuki's response to all of that was like, hey. Don't do that. You don't need to hide from me, I can see you're hurting. You can be honest. You can be ugly and messy and unfair and pissed off and whatever else you need to be. I don't care if you want to put on a brave face for other people, but I'm your friend and I'm here and I want to comfort you through this. Please let me in.

And Iruka… didn't. Not really. He certainly let Mizuki closer than he let anybody else, leaned on him more, relied on him easier -- but there was still always that barrier. Iruka never really let himself break in front of Mizuki (or anybody else) the way he so clearly needed to.

Mizuki's enjoyment of seeing Iruka in pain started as him wanting to help Iruka overcome that pain -- wanting him to have catharsis and closure, wanting him to stop faking because Mizuki would have still been his friend anyway -- but the fact that he's the only person in the fucking village who's consistently been by Iruka's side since day one and is still left feeling like he's pulling teeth trying to get any kind of vulnerability from Iruka started to fester inside of him, and he grew resentful.

Does Iruka truly have so little faith in him? So little trust? Hasn't Mizuki earned at least that much? He's never asked Iruka for anything, never once held anything over his head. Every time Iruka calls on him Mizuki comes running, and now here they are, when Iruka so clearly needs someone there for him, and he's... not letting Mizuki in. He's not letting anybody in, but this isn't about anybody else. This is about them. This is about Iruka slamming the door in Mizuki's face like the fact they've been attached at the hip since the day they met means nothing.

It doesn't immediately spiral into Mizuki's deranged hate-boner for Iruka of course they're still just kids and Mizuki's concern for Iruka is completely genuine even as he's hurt at being shut out. But this is where it starts.
