How could you forget all the cool heavy metal ladies!? The metal scene of Botswana is NOT just a boys club
Botswana Metal aesthetic is something I never knew I needed until it was shown to me.
Ok I previously reblogged this with rambling questions in the tags but I decided to just look it up and find out
Botswana Metalheads, locally known as Marok (Rock), are a localized subculture that emerged in Botswana during the late 1990s and early 2000
As Botswana's death metal subculture descends on a dusty village, Jamie Fullerton finds a unique way to go off your typical tourist trail.
Photographer Paul Shiakallis documents the women of Marok, a small but vibrant heavy metal subculture in Botswana.
And I’m delighted to report that yes this is a Botswana specific thing (this is not just “news flash, African people can like metal too” it’s specifically a subculture in Botswana)
And it appears to have sprung up organically through students who went abroad to study bringing back cassettes and CDs of music they liked, because some of those students happened to be into metal.
