The secret to a good nap is to wake up at the correct time. When you sleep your body goes through sleep cycles (stage 1,2,3,4, and REM). This process is repeated throughout the night. When you get to deep sleep (stages 3 and 4) this is when your body is repairing tissue, bone, muscle, and strengthening your immune system. If you wake up during stages 3 or 4 you will be groggy and disorientated. So the trick is knowing how the cycles work. The appropriate amount of time to nap is either 35 minutes OR around an hour and 45 minutes (which means you will wake up in stage 2). If you wake yourself up during the deep sleep cycles the purpose of the nap is ruined. Even if you only sleep for 35 minutes your mind can relax and you will feel energized when you wake up. trust me, I’m a professional napper.
What is loneliness?
Lately, in an attempt to get my mind off of heartbreak, I have been trying to figure out what the feeling of loneliness is. So when I start to feel that empty anxiety in the pit of my stomach, I focus on it. I figure, like everything else, its just a mixture of chemicals. The perfect cocktail of neurotransmission that manifests in memories of her, coupled with hormones as a reaction to that electrochemical signal. Emptiness in a compound. My body’s natural way for adapting to loss. Just like the love I felt for her, it can be broken down to a chemical reaction. I know those chemicals will pass, those hormones will dissipate. I will still be here, waiting for for the next biological cascade that makes me human.
The idea of what it means to be men and how we define masculinity seems to be something I keep coming back to recently. This talk offers no solutions or insight into the cause of violence or chauvinism but it is an important part in seeing how we as humans buy into the social construction of what is deemed appropriate. American culture celebrates rugged individualism, in turn, American male culture takes that value to an extreme. I still find myself slipping into this type of "I can do this on my own, I don't need anyone else" type of thought process. When in reality, it's best to be open and honest with how we feel with others; it's okay to ask for help. Most importantly, it is an important component of healthy relationships to allow oneself to be emotionally vulnerable with someone else. Being a man does not always mean being the toughest and strongest guy you can be. We are all capable of feeling emotions of fear, hurt, and pain. The more honest you are with your self the more open and honest you'll be with others. While many different conversations need to be had about recent events, I believe this should be one of them. M
"There are so many men who care deeply about these [women] issues, but caring deeply is not enough. We need more men with the guts, the courage, the strength, with the moral integrity to break our complicit silence and challenge each other to stand with women and not against them." Jackson Katz

How selfish soever man may be supposed, there are evidently some principles in his nature, which interest him in the fortune of others, and render their happiness necessary to him, though he derives nothing from it, except the pleasure of seeing it

I’m flattered and impressed.
From this, I have learned that I barely ever breathe. That’s not good!!!
There has been a lot of discussion of the benefits of breathing among the VidCon staff this week.
