i talked to my primary care physician about starting hormone replacement therapy and they’re going to refer me to a clinic in oakland where i can talk to an endocrinologist and pediatric gender specialist!!

an excerpt from my book Parasomnia, a psychological horror with sci-fi elements that I’ll be writing as my senior thesis for my creative writing class!

it’s a fictional story with real-world morals about a 26-year-old trans woman named Amber, who works as an electrician at a robotics factory. it’s set in present-day Connecticut in a dark AU where technological innovations and advancements are made much faster. it explores Amber’s mental state and questions her sanity before diving into the horrific history of the facility in which she works. it is also an allegory for systemic transphobia and bigotry in the 21st century and the psychological trauma that queer and trans people experience as a result of the discrimination targeted towards them.

Chapter One

I sometimes get so scared to sleep that I forget that sleep is a natural function of the body that needs to occur in order for someone to stay alive. I don’t treat it like that nearly as much as I should. Why should something so mandatory, so crucial for survival, cause me so much pain? Perhaps there’s some darkly poetic irony in the fact that the only thing keeping me from going insane is the same thing that makes me most feel like I am.

In the meantime, I fix the breakers at a robotics manufacturing facility in Hartford, Connecticut.

My flashlight shines through the narrow, dark hallways, my footsteps echoing as though I’m in a cathedral. I’ve walked through this building countless times, but the unease it makes me feel once the sun goes down has somehow never waned. Each time the beam of my flashlight ghosts over one of the metal constructs populating the facility, a shiver runs down my spine that has nothing to do with the lack of heat.

I’ve never liked looking at those robots. Something about their cold, dead eyes — which I could swear follow me around as I walk, though I could be paranoid — has always put me on edge. But the work I do on the electrical power in the building keeps me housed, and by the standards of a trans woman in 21st-century America, suffering the cold stares of a few glorified tin cans at night is a small price to pay for a stable income and a livable home. So I grit my teeth, keep my flashlight on, and do my job.

The steady humming and whirring of the manufacturing machinery, which is kept running long after most of the workers have gone home for the night, is pretty much the only thing in the building relaxing my nerves rather than agitating them. If the facility were to ever plunge into complete silence, I’d probably go ballistic and start throwing things. Thank the need for 24-hour electricity that hasn’t happened yet.
