Why this Venice Biennale is so political
“What does it mean to fill the Biennale with politically minded art and artists? What does it mean to exhibit works featuring an abundance of weapons, countless references to oppression, and overt displays of pain? What does it mean to bring 136 artists to Venice, to give them a forum to speak and then invite the entire world to listen?”

In a building stripped of any typical Venetian charm, the Pavilion of Iran is filled with works by artists from across the Middle East and Southeast Asia. “The Great Game” takes the historical, political, economic, religious, and social tangles of the region as inspiration and presents a grouping of artists eager to respond to their everyday reality.”

Reflection: The 2015 Armory Show
It’s always a bit ironic – the art fair. Us art enthusiasts get hyped up for the big event, purchase our tickets in advance, mark the date on our calendars. But in the midst of it all, we somehow always forget that we really actually hate it. That the art fair is not truly for us. Because, after all, it is an art fair.
“There is something about her photographs that balance mystery, beauty and texture in a way that no other artist has ever managed to achieve. Francesca Woodman: I’m trying my hand at fashion photography, on view at Marian Goodman New York through March 12, 2015 is simply great. The curators let Francesca do the speaking, arranging the thirty small photographs in a simple line formation around the gallery space. The work is so subtle, it could be overlooked. But it mustn’t be.”

"He is an artist concerned with method. Ha Chonghyun is a leading figure of Tansaekhwa, the Korean Monochrome Movement. Known for their manipulation of materials – soaked canvases, ripped paper, or pushed paint – Tansaekhwa artists remain dedicated to the monochromatic palette. Chonghyun is no exception."

"Brad Jones: Diptychs, on view at Sargent’s Daughter’s through December 21, 2014, is mesmerizing. An ongoing collaboration between artists Brandi Twilley and Jennifer Rubell, Brad Jones was created as a fictional alter ego to represent the two collaborators (and to playfully critique the stereotype of the aggressive American male painter). The project is the result of a strict structure: The two artists met three times a week for two hours. Twilley painted and Rubell posed nude."

"Ronald Moran tackles violence – domestic violence, gang violence, social violence. Yet his works reflect the opposite – tranquility, delicateness, softness. Creating interiors of bedrooms or domestic kitchens, Moran blankets these rooms entirely in white cotton. Tools and kitchen utensils, typically sharp or shiny, are transformed into pillowy objects. The works become calm – static – with rarely a depiction of the human figure present, but rather mere traces of lives lived."
