# my favourite part about this post # is that nowhere does it say to reblog this # but we’re all reblogging it # because if we have to suffer # so do other writers

there’s this rush and this pressure, sometimes, for huge, mind-blowing numbers on ao3. thousands of kudos and comments and ppl obsessing over ratios, but like - there’s something so incredibly wonderful about, idk, even ten kudos. ten? you mean ten people, TEN total strangers, found something I wrote and clicked on it and read it and liked it? ten comments: you mean ten people took the time to tell me what they thought about my work, took the time and energy to write about MY WORK in their little comment bubble? ten people?? fifty?? one hundred???
but even just one - if one single person took the time out of their day to tell me how much they appreciate the little bit of my soul I just put out into the world - idk, it just means everything, doesn’t it?
Reminders for new ao3 users (in no particular order):
- filter your searches like you would on a library website or in an online catalogue
- don’t post placeholders, fic searches, or recommendations as fics. DON’T! It’s against ao3 TOS
- there is no algorithm. ao3 sorts by date posted/updated unless you filter with specific search criteria
- ao3 is a non profit. that means it doesn’t sell ads to make money — it only survives on donations. this is why it can show you so many fics without ever flashing an ad or pop up at you!
- report fics that break TOS when you see them (I.e., placeholder fics, searches) to help other users navigate better
- the tag “dead dove, do not eat” doesn’t equate to gore/awfulness automatically. it is a complementary tag that enhances current tags. E.g., if the fic is tagged “gore” and “dead dove, do not eat” the author really wants you to mind the gore tag
- most fandoms have a variation of “no beta, we die like (x character)” and they all link back to the “No beta” tag
- publishing a new fic sometimes means it won’t show up in the fandom/pairing tag for a few minutes
- subscribers receive update emails at different times, depending on when you update/publish your fic. there’s no good way to predict when an e-mail will be sent — it can be in 30 seconds, or two hours later
- some fics are restricted by authors to those with ao3 accounts only. if you see a blue lock in the upper right corner, that fic is only visible to logged in ao3 users
- you can block commenters now! this didn’t use to be a thing
- updating a fic just to stay at the top of the pairing tag/fandom tag is a dick move. unless you’re legitimately editing or adding chapters, this just annoys readers and fellow authors, and people will skip over your fic
Former fanfiction.net writers! What was your toxic trait?
Fic is 57 chapters long, but only 20k words ⌨️
Author’s notes in the middle of a paragraph 😝
Way. Too. Many. Characters. 👨👩👧👦
Grammar? Never heard of her. 🖍️
*posts new chapter that’s just an explanation for why chapter is late* ⏰
Song lyrics typed out into the fic itself 🎼
Never finishing a WIP 💀
(I never wrote on ffn, I just wanna see a bunch of authors roast themselves 😇)
A recipe for finding your story's plot:
Ingredients:
2 cups of Things that must be in the story (this can be characters, specific scenes, settings, subplots etc.)
1 cup of Vague plot ideas I may not use
1 tbsp of Central Themes
1 tsp of Ending (either happy, tragic, or bitter-sweet)
1 tsp of Protagonist's Primary Motivation
2 lbs of Brick Wall
Time, as needed
Instructions:
In a large bowl, mix Things that must be in the story. Set aside.
In a separate bowl, sift together Vague plot ideas I may not use. Discard the excess and set aside.
Add Themes, Ending, and Motivation to a small jar. Screw lid on tight and shake until mixture becomes Conflict.
Pour Conflict and Vague plot ideas into Things that must be in the story. Blend on medium until Plot Points form.
Taste.
If it is still missing something, smash head against 1 lbs of Brick Wall for one to six hours.
Let marinate for one to 365 days. Add more Things and Vague plot ideas as desired.
Smash head against the rest of the Brick Wall for one to six hours.
Scream.
Repeat steps 5 through 9 as needed.
After sufficient marination, the mixture will form an idea. This will tell you what specific action must happen in order to resolve your story's conflict. Write this down and make appropriate sacrifices to thank whichever deity took pity on you.
Now you have your conflict, climax, and resolution. You just have to figure out how to get there. Good luck with the damn middle section dork!!
do you ever not write for so long that you’re almost afraid to? like what if I’m dumb now
“How do you write so much so quickly” I don’t edit. Welcome to the First Draft Trash Show. If I skimmed the chapter for typos before uploading then I put in 10x the effort I usually do.
Now that there is a ratio. The writers are really feeling this one huh.
Dear AO3 readers please know that if I do not reply to your comment it is because I am laying it on the ground and rolling in it like a cat in a flower bed
I feel so attacked right now...
I hope every writer who sees this writes LOADS the next few months. Like freetime opens up, no writers block, the ability to focus, etc etc you're able to write loads & make lots of progress <3
[Inspiration for this has totally been nicked from writblr in general, but I’m aiming this one at my followers with a more fandom bent.]
🦇🎃🦇 Trick or Treat ! 🦇🎃🦇
Calling all my fandom guys, gals and ghouls, boos and baes! Would you like to play a game? Let’s celebrate the Spooky Season and all things that go boo, bang and bump in the night!
How to play? It’s simple! During this event we go traipsing up the winding path to each other’s ask boxes and send the owner one question: Trick or Treat?
As the owner of the house, the recipient then gets to decide if the reply is to be a trick or a treat!
🦇🍬👻🍬🦇👻🍬👻🍬🦇👻🍬👻🍬👻🦇🍬👻🍬🦇
Treat — If the recipient chooses treat, they share something with us as a treat. This could be a snippet of fic, sketches, character or fic lore, headcanons, inspiration music or whatever takes your fancy!
Trick — Asker beware: if the recipient chooses trick, the asker has to share something instead! But, since it’s a trick, they may choose to leave something in a link or under a read more that may be a little unexpected…
Trick or Treating ask boxes are open from the 30th of October to the 5th of November! (Or until the owner of the ask box decides otherwise.)
🦇🍬👻🍬🦇👻🍬👻🍬🦇👻🍬👻🍬👻🦇🍬👻🍬🦇
(Examples of) Good things to share:
Snippets of fic/sketches
Character/world/fic trivia
Inspirational songs/playlists
Moodboards
Poetry
Anything else you think is a nice, fun treat to share with others!
If you get Trick, pulling a trick or posting a treat of your own is entirely up to you. But let’s play nice! Rick rolls, pic crews of characters, and fun, silly videos are all good, but let’s avoid things like screamers and other unpleasant tricks, alright? We want this to be a fun thing for everyone.
trick or treat!!
🤔 I think I'll go treat this time.
[I don't actually have much going right now, tbh. I've been procrastinating. Lol. So here's a sneak peek at the last chapter of the Hetaween project!]
~"Things always happened to you, too." Lukas sighs, staring ahead blankly. "Ghosts, both nice and…not so nice, liked to hang around you. I did my best to keep them at bay, but… Things thrived there. Poltergeists and the like were manifesting faster than I could banish them. And they'd always go back to you." He turns his gaze on Emil thoughtfully. "Berwald had a similar ability to me, I don't know if you know. It wasn't as strong, but he could see things."
It's all very similar to what Berwald had told him already, but he wants to know as much as he can now. "What about Mathias?"
Tino laughs at that. "He was worse than me! No such thing as ghosts -- full stop. He'd find an explanation even when I started to doubt."
Lukas smiles fondly. "You two used to go on mock ghost hunts, just to piss off Berwald and I. You'd find answers for everything, even when we knew better."~
Gothic Fiction
Here is a guide to Gothic Fiction with the most important characteristics, differences throughout the genre, theoretical approaches and some sources to learn more. This will be pretty long, so here it goes:
What is Gothic Fiction?
Gothic Fiction is a literary genre that emerged during the 1760s and was popular until the 1820s. The second tradition of Gothic fiction was popular towards the end of the 19th century. It is marked by isolated settings, secrets, darkness, supernatural elements, themes of revenge, love, law, incest and should evoke terror and fear in the readers. It should also evoke the consciousness of unconscious thoughts. Also called the Literature of terror.
1) Characteristics: there are remarkable differences between the First and Second tradition
1.1. First tradition: starting with Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto (1764) until the 1820s
Main works: Ann Radcliffe – The Mysteries of Udolpho (1794), Matthew Lewis – The Monk (1796), Mary Shelley – Frankenstein (1818), Robert Maturin- Melmoth The Wanderer (1820)
Gothic villain: pure evil (not Frankenstein though)
Setting: usually in an antiquated space; e.g. castle, foreign palace, an abbey, a vast prison, a large old house or theatre, an aging city or urban underworld, a decaying storehouse, factory, laboratory
–>medieval
within this space are hidden some secrets from the past that haunt the characters, psychologically, physically, or otherwise at the main time of the story
-hauntings: ghosts, monsters, etc –> at this level Gothic Fictions generally play with and oscillate between the earthly laws of conventional reality and the possibilities of the supernatural
-confrontation with the hauntings=confrontation with the unconscious
-typical plot tends to delay narrative development through digressions, interruptions, infolded tales, interpolated poems etc, which move the narrative backwards as well as forwards –>influence from epistolary novels
Characters: heroine: young woman derived from sentimental novel, well-bred, passive, respectable, male hero
Themes: supernatural elements, incest, love, revenge
