Consider: Everyone else around whumpee being more visibly affected by what happened than whumpee is.

Constantly being checked on, hugged, pitied. The trauma latches onto friends, family, lovers.

But not whumpee. They're always just... fine. They never bring up what happened. Maybe they're even confused about what all the fuss is about? It's all over now, shouldn't we all be happy?

It starts to feel like whumpee is comforting everyone else even though they're the one who suffered most.

Do they ever finally break down? in private, or in front of everyone? Or worse, it stays that way forever? The incident becomes a distant memory, while all of whumpee's loved ones are constantly waiting for them to crash?
