“Listen I think what you saw was just a crazy old man. Nothing to be scared of.”
“Are you sure?”
“It’s alright. People are weird.”
“Where were you today? Before the whole ‘run away screaming’ thing.”
“I mean, I was at the bar earlier but nothing was happening so I decided to head to the mall and now I’m here.”
“It’s okay, I do that too sometimes. Why wouldn’t she want you to carry mace around? Wait– I got a better idea, we should take a self defense class. It would be fun.”
“Because what if I use it on myself? Because that would be bad. But I am okay with that. That sounds fun.”
“okay, so what did this man looked like?”
“He had a face and at least a left hand... And I think he had white hair and a beard.”
“Hello pumpkin, Anyways so what happened? What made you want to hug a stranger? Not that i’m complaining. I personally don’t mind hugs from cute girls.”
“He looked at me and then he pointed at his eyes and then he pointed at my eyes and I got scared, remember? I told you and he wanted to trade eyes so I...”
“you must not be a smart cookie. Anyways I’m Romani and you are?”
“What? I’m plenty smart and my name is Pumpkin.”
“That he was watching you, you know?”
“I’m not comfortable with that.”
"Oh... Right. I guess I should’ve known that.”
“Wow, well this is random. I think you should calm down and think for a minute. After what you’ve been through I highly doubt its a good idea to hug a stranger.”
“But I... Didn’t want to think about it. It was scary, right? Thinking about it seems like the worst thing to do.”
“Uh no, that is definitely not what I’m saying. I meant mace as in the self defense spray, you know that stuff that comes in an aerosol can?”
“Oh, yeah. Right. Sometimes I forget words sound like other words. But I don’t think my mom wants me to carry that around.”
“I’m pretty sure that just means that he’s watching you. Still creepy, but less so.”
“Wait, what? That can’t be it.”
“I’d suggest staying away from him but you should also start carrying around mace or something of the sorts to protect yourself.”
“Mace is that salsa, right? I always thought it was really good but what you’re saying is I should offer him some chips and salsa?”
“I don’t think that’s what he meant, P.”
“But if it happens again, come find me, okay? Sounds like that guy needs to keep his eyes to himself.”
“I mean, yeah sure, I’ll do that but... Wait, but... What did he mean, then?”
“What the hell? That’s horrifying.”
“Yeah, and I didn’t know what else to do so I came to find you.”
“Did he blind you in the process? ‘Cause if not you must be awfully stupid to think I care enough to comfort you or whatever the fuck you were hoping for.”
“Oh, I... I thought you were someone else.”
“There... There was this guy and he pointed at his eyes and then he pointed at my eyes and so I screamed and came to you because he wanted to switch eyes.”
“Believe me, I really do love this time of year,” Todd admitted. “The weather’s good, and it’s nice to be outside. But it’s awful being in the machine shop like this when it gets warmer out like this. Grease and oil doesn’t smell good on a normal day, they smell even worse during a hot day.”
Pumpkin couldn’t see why this was such a difficult dilemma since she had always done what was comfortable to her, and had normally had the luxury to do so. “Why don’t you work somewhere else?” She asked innocently, popping a sour patch into her mouth. “Like the bar? I could try and get Christian to hire you, if you want?”
“Fascinating.” Sian rolled her eyes. “So I’ll take it that you’re the town weirdo, yeah?”
Pumpkin frowned, biting her lip. “No? I don’t think so?”
