Industrial Trains @ Kurobe Dam

Squashed in with the dam workers, we were lucky enough to travel the small gauge industrial trains used for access - both on the Kurobe Gorge railway and the Kansai Electric dam access tunnel. At one point in the tunnel, the scalding steam from volcanic activity still erupts, filling the tunnel with sulfurous fumes and steam.

Over 170 workers died during construction, and we gave thanks at the memorial to their lives. Gas masks are still carried every day in the tunnels.
