Hey Pun! Big fan of your cosplays :D I was wondering, do you cut and style your own wigs? I'm going to have to undertake getting my hands on and working with wigs for the first time soon and was wondering if you had any pointers for absolute beginners! Thank you so much :3
Hello! Thank you so much for liking my cosplays! That really truly means a lot! :D <3 Yes, I do! However, I really do very basic cutting and styling. Mostly just cutting bangs, etc. I've been cutting my own hair for a little while as well, so I'm pretty good at cutting wigs simply (bangs, side parts, and maybe a bit of styling), but I haven't done much of the wig styling that involves crimping/steaming!! Basically, I don't really make helmet wigs if you're looking for a guide on those I can't really help!! Not to say I won't give them a go eventually. So my guide will be more for the basics. One thing I can strongly suggest is that you cut the wig on your own head! OR you can buy a wig head and mark it where your hairline ends, eyebrows are etc. Since I've been doing it myself I usually cut wigs pretty fast just on my head. You can usually get those Styrofoam ones for cheap even at the dollar store. I do suggest getting a good pair of scissors for your wigs as well; it really does make a difference in the cut. I also keep something like hair shaving razors (I find they really help for spikes or characters I want a lot of layers, etc.). If I do need to do any styling (such as on my Sakuya or Aunn), I use Got2b Glued Blasting Freeze Spray. It works quite well for styling, and I usually suggest you use a hair dryer with it to help with hold. I'll attach a few videos below to help out! (This is my fav video to link to people starting out with everything) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQlJn0VkK9Q&t=1s Extra helpful videos! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JHvSeK5_cU&t=1s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsMfIVK8Vqk&t=56s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOGOyBWlsMI I hope that is helpful! I'll attach some photos here of the spray and the hair razor :D Hope that's helpful!
Kosuzu!! <3
its previous anon again, tsym for all the advice sorry if this is asking for too much but im a little confused on that part about the clips for the wig 😭 even a short further elaboration would be much appreciated!
No worries!!!!! Sorry if I didn't explain the best. I made a mistake writing that earlier post and said to attach them to the side of the wig but I meant the headband! The clips that I showed were just an example of something you could use to hold the headband to the wig more securely. Those little flat clips are nice because they lie a little more flush to your head. You would want to glue them on the inside of the headband (so the part of the headband that touches the wig) to help hold the headband onto your wig easier. Basically you would slide the headband on (with your wig on) and snap the clips in to keep the headband from slipping around. The silicone wig band I showed after is to go underneath your wig, and that's just to help your wig not slide around (you can also just use lots of bobby pins, though). I hope that's helpful!! :D
More Mamizou! Just some quick at-home pics before I do a photoshoot! Shows off some of the props I made better / the length of the tail! I'm really happy with how this costume turned out!!
how do the ears attach onto your reisen cosplay? im planning on maybe also doing a cosplay of her sometime and honestly my biggest concern is getting the ears to stay up, did you use a headband or some other method
I used a headband! Also zip ties to attach it to the headband itself! I wear my ears kinda far back on my head so you don't really see them! if I redid them I think I would use magnets now though. My Reisen ears usually don't slip around because they are fairly light, but you could also install clips like these onto the sides of your headband (inside) to help hold the headband in place. (Glue them on the inside, either on the top or the bottom.)
Also, I can't recommend a silicone wig band enough. I use it for any time I'm wearing anything on my head since it stops my wig from sliding around (which will also help if you have clips into the wig). They are fairly inexpensive (you can also get some in fabric material if you don't like the feeling of silicone), and they help a ton!
Hope that helps :D
Mamizou I didn't wear her to the con today since it was super rainy! So I put her on to take some photos in the hotel! I'll have better photos soon since I didn't wear everything / missing some props!!
Aya Shameimaru!!! I'm back from ACEN!!! I'm posting some Aya until I get photos back from the con!! <3 Costume made by me!!!
Have you posted any make-up tutorials anywhere? ^^ It's something I struggle with BUG TIME
Hi!! Sadly, I have not. I'll consider it for the future, though!! Sorry I don't have anything to link at the moment!! : (
Mamizou Futatsuiwa!!! She's finally done!! It was my first time making a tail from scratch as well. I wanted the tail to be very large (I think I achieved that) but also sittable since I'll only be wearing it outside.
I'll be wearing this to Anime North!!
