what is killing computers instead of polygons? I don't know anything about game development/optimization lol

mostly poor handling of rendering from the engine. stuff like over-complicated shaders (very visible in unreal games for ex), ray tracing/ray marching, anti aliasing etc. it is all programming, art has very little to do with how well a game will run. of course some of it has impact, if you only load 8k textures it will require some time to compute. but how fast the pixels of those textures are interpreted depending on which compression the engine handles is more impactful. polygons are just points moving in space, so just a bunch of coordinates that you have to memorize and update. computers do that very well and have for a long time.

3d rendering is an extremely technical but nonetheless fascinating topic. i personally find it adds value to my experience playing games when i understand what goes on behind the scene and what an incredible feat it is to render anything at all on a monitor.
