        her  hands  were  gentle.    his  could  only  harm. 

       𝐡𝐢𝐬  𝐨𝐰𝐧  𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞  𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝  𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐥𝐲  𝐭𝐨  𝐩𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐡. 

       with  surprising  speed ,    he  whirls  to  face  the  darkness ,    the  tip  of  his  blade  scraping  harshly  against  the  floor  as  it’s  held  aloft ,    its  metal  long  since  rusted  and  catching  little  light  from  the  flickering  bulbs  above.    he  is  a  destructive  force  above  all else ,    marked  by  unrepentant  and  indiscriminate  violence  --  but  where  he  once  failed  to  protect ,    perhaps  he  could  atone  in  his  wake. 

        the  creatures  will  not  lay  a  hand  on  this  child.    he’ll  sooner  cut  them  off.

      time to talk about what’s underneath ph’s helmet.  masahiro ito, famed designer for the monsters in silent hill 1 - 3, said himself that there is, in fact, a head under all that metal.  the bubble-like protrusion at the back is not flesh, as many people (and even toy designers) mistake it to be ;  ito has not stated its purpose (his exact words were “it’s a secret :)”) but imo, due to it being placed beneath the hollow end of the helmet, it’s there to help keep the helmet aloft and balanced, kept in place by stretching around his neck. 

     even inside the helmet, his “face” is obscured  --  similar to this early concept art from the second film, which we otherwise don’t mention  --  with straps and rods keeping the helmet stable / in place.  

       the facial mask resembles a respirator, symbolic of mary’s wasting disease.  it does not, however, have a solid bottom, allowing what appears to be an inhumanly long tongue to poke through an edge of the mask that seems to bend / open and deal additional close-range damage to anyone he grabs.  that being said, it is a result of delusions or a weakened state of mind and nothing more, as iron cannot bend on its own. 

      i know what you’re thinking.  ‘ but cole, is his face... y’know... human? ’ 

      yes.  and also no.  as with the rest of his design, it is human-like, with a regular shape and features you’d find on any normal person, only... different.  i have yet to sketch out my take on it, but the eyes are most likely thin, hollow slits.  there is no discernible nose or mouth, adding to his inhuman quality ;  the skin may simply be thin or damaged enough that the respirator is not defunct, but instead passing through various small holes.  also potentially deformed in some way (burns or decomposition, possibly) in reference to mary’s disease, as well as james’ guilt over his involvement in her demise.

      𝐈𝐍  𝐇𝐈𝐒  𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐏𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐋 ,    𝐀  𝐅𝐋𝐀𝐒𝐇  𝐎𝐅  𝐘𝐄𝐋𝐋𝐎𝐖  -----  a  familiar ,    jovial  face,    with  rounded  eyes  and  a  singular  tooth  square  in  the  middle  of  its  open  mouth.    its  fur ,    normally  matted  with  congealed  blood  from  sources  unknown ,    is  surprisingly  clean.    were  he  more  capable  of  emotions ,    he  might  feel  something  close  to  shock ,    surprise  at  seeing  a  reminder  of  his  former  home. 

      he  feels  only  anger  instead.    broad ,    muscular  shoulders  heave  with  each  breath ,    a  near - gurgle  beneath  a  rusted  and  cracked  helm.    the  creature  towers  over  the  girl’s  form ,    unseen  gaze  locked  on  the  mascot  head  in  her  hands.   hulking  frame’s  stiff  body  language  is  enough  to  convey  his  discomfort  --  unease ,    anxiety. 

      𝐍𝐎𝐓  𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐒.    𝐍𝐎𝐓  𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐒.    𝐍𝐎𝐓  𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐒.

       the  hoarse  mirth  that  rattles  from  the  deathslinger’s  bruised  throat  upon  piercing  a  survivor’s  flesh  with  the  blade  of  his  bayonet  grates  on  the  executioner’s  nerves ;  there  should  be  no  joy  derived  from  the  pain  they  inflict ,    only  a  sense  of  fulfillment  of  their  duty ,    their  servitude  to  the  entity. 

      when  next  their  paths  cross ,    the  butcher  stands in  wait ,    ever  silent ,    and  watches  the  man’s  eyes  sparkle  beneath  the  brim  of  his  hat.    were  he  a  more  curious  being ,    he  might  inquire  into  the  man’s  way  of  thinking  -----  but  he  is  not ,    and  what  little  confusion  nags  at  his  mind  is  further  inhibited  by  his  lack  of  speech.

     𝐀  𝐅𝐋𝐀𝐒𝐇  𝐎𝐅  𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐄𝐑,    𝐀𝐋𝐋  -  𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐒𝐔𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐆  𝐑𝐀𝐆𝐄.    he  feels  the  slight  disturbance,    the  brief  wobble  of  the  teetering  blade,    before  he  sees  its  source.    there’s  a  moment  where  he  considers  breaking  their  fingers,    one  by  one,    and  making  them  watch  before  slicing  off  their  arms.    𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵  𝘵𝘰𝘶𝘤𝘩  𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵  𝘪𝘴𝘯'𝘵  𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴.

      still,    the  figure  that’s  running  away  is  far  too  small,    too  clean,    to  be  one  of  the  creatures  that  inhabit  this  town.    there  is,    however,    a  certain  darkness  that  emanates  from  within  her,    a  dormant  disposition  for  violence  that  is  outweighed  and  kept  latent  by  childlike  innocence.    he  senses  that  fountain  will  overflow  and  spill  out  into  the  world  before  long,    and  another  soul  will  be  lost  to  the  corruption  that  blackens  the  hearts  of  men. 

       but  she  is  still  just  a  child  now,    and  he  sees  little  reward  in  exacting  punishment  to  a  life  that  can  still  avoid  being  tainted.  she  is  not  the  first  girl  to  roam  these  streets,    and  while  she  is  not  the  one  to  whom  he  owes  his  very  life,   the  near - sentiment  is  just  as  strong.    why  should  this  child  run  free,  when  she  was  confined?    because  she  wills  it  so.  

       the  urge  to  give  chase,    fingers  clenched  around  the  knife’s  handle,    is  quickly  smothered.     𝙝𝙚  𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡  𝙣𝙤𝙩  𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙢  𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨  𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙙.    in  time,    he  feels  as  though  the  world  will  do  that  on  its  own.

      𝐁𝐔𝐈𝐋𝐃𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐒  𝐅𝐀𝐋𝐋  𝐓𝐎  𝐑𝐔𝐈𝐍,    𝐎𝐍𝐄  𝐁𝐘  𝐎𝐍𝐄.    tiled  floors  crack  and  give  way,    walls  peeling  like  stripped  skin.    the  visitor  isn’t  innocent,    has  already  been  haunted  by  a  force  far  older  than  he,    and  yet,    has  been  summoned  to  walk  these  streets  -----  alone,    trapped,    left  only  with  that  of  his  own  mind  as  company. 

        the  apostle  does  not  see  these  visions  as  they’re  meant  to  be  seen,    only  as  they  are.    a  small  boy  hurries  by,    giggling  quietly.    footfalls  disturb  a  nearby  puddle  and  send  a  smattering  of  droplets  onto  the  sidewalk. 

        he  watches  with  muted  curiosity  as  the  boy  ducks  into  one  of  the  decrepit  hotels.    a  flash  of  yellow,    and  he’s  gone.    somewhere,    a  siren  blares,    and  a  small,    accusatory  voice  seems  to  carry  with  each  wail  --  

    𝙞𝙩'𝙨  𝙖𝙡𝙡  𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧  𝙛𝙖𝙪𝙡𝙩.    𝙖𝙡𝙡  𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧  𝙛𝙖𝙪𝙡𝙩.    𝙖𝙡𝙡  𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧  𝙛𝙖𝙪𝙡𝙩.
