seen a lot of hate for sarah in obsession but i think she’s an excellent representation of the ways that women can perpetuate misogyny for men and yet become collateral because in the end they are still women

reading the original screenplay for obsession. i see why they cut this because it’s so in-your-face but godddd nikki (originally nicky) was basically telling bear what would be the moral of the movie and he just can’t absorb any of it

One thing about Obsession (2026) that I enjoyed was that it almost asks you to feel empathy for the entity possessing Nikki as well as the real one. Like, obviously the things she's doing are horrific and fucked up, but I think the scene where Bear is asking her to "just be Nikki!" and she eventually just desperatly screams "I can't be Nikki!" does a really good job of showcasing the entity's inner feelings. She's been created with the sole purpose of loving this guy more than anyone else but no matter how perfect it is or how much he claims to love her, its not her that he loves, its Nikki. And any time she stops pretending to be Nikki, he reacts (albeit rightfully) with disgust and horror. She can't be Nikki because Nikki would never love Bear, and so Bear will never love her.

no but honestly. honestlyyyy. wow. obsession. let’s talk about it. it’s a film about the consequences of running from accountability. bear is a coward. he can’t be honest about his romantic feelings for nikki and he can’t be honest about what he’s done to her. from the beginning, he can’t even be honest with himself about himself! he has multiple opportunities to be honest with nikki about his grief over his cat and he puts his feelings on the back burner in order to cater to a version of her that doesn’t exist: a version in which she likes him back romantically, in which she wouldn’t care about his grief because the grief doesn’t matter because nothing matters if she doesn’t love him. he sacrifices her and sacrifices himself in return. he betrays her true (platonic) love for him in order to fulfill the part of him that feels incomplete and unsatisfied with himself. it’s not about her, but it should be. real love calls you to consider another’s feelings. he can’t trust her because he can’t trust himself, because he doesn’t love himself. bear is obsessed with nikki because she’s an answer to a problem: if she loves him, it means he’s good enough, worthy, and acceptable; the real problem is that he doesn’t consider that nikki already believes he is. nay, the real problem is that it isn’t enough for him, and he can’t accept that that is his problem to overcome. and if he had tried, he would have seen sooner how things in his life would turn out just fine.
