I used to post about lots of stuff but for right now it’s mostly just Stranger Things cause you should never underestimate the bond between someone and the mediocre piece of media they began hyperfixating on as a tween.

If I had a nickel for every time a popular sci-fi series introduced an incredibly interesting and compelling mother-daughter duo where the mother was separated from their daughter at birth because they were stolen from them by weird men who raised them as their own daughters and then the mothers spent years fighting tooth and nail to get their daughters back only to finally be briefly reunited before being separated again as the mothers are disappeared and largely forgotten about by the narrative and the daughters are fridged for Man Pain, I’d have two nickels - which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that happened twice.

It’s actually crazy how good seasons 5 and 6 of Community are. The show was on life support and had been for years at that stage, they were haemorrhaging main cast members left right and centre, they were actually cancelled at one point and then picked up by THE FAILED YAHOO STREAMING SERVICE. Like no one would’ve blamed them if the last two seasons were bad but they’re just not. It’s still good

I love thinking about what would happen if/when Hawkins and everything that happened there gets picked up by buzzfeed unsolved and amateur investigator YouTubers and true crime podcasters in the 2010s and all these characters suddenly find their trauma and lives not exactly in the news but in the public consciousness again. Urban explorers breaking into the lab or even the Byers house which is just lying empty cause people think it’s cursed and posting videos online. Ghost hunters are turning up left right and centre.

Like, before the internet the most any of them would probably get when they said they were from Hawkins was a “oh I’ve heard of it. Wasn’t that place on the news a lot a few years ago?” but it probably would’ve been easy enough to drive the conversation away from that. But in an era where people can find a million deep dives into Hawkins at the click of a button? Suddenly there’s a barrage of questions. From co-workers and friends and even their own children if they have any.

Even better if some of the characters end up semi-successful in their chosen fields. Award winning reporter Nancy Wheeler suddenly finds herself in the situation where all people want to ask her about is where she grew up and her dead high school best friend. Will finds his artwork being looked over for ‘clues’ as part of this huge conspiracy and people keep trying to ask him questions about what really happened to him and he’s just there like “please leave me alone”. Jonathan’s movies are not immune from this because people find out pretty quickly he’s the older brother of the Boy Who Came Back To Life so now he’s being asked about it. All of these characters would have spent around 2 decades moving forward and trying to create new lives for themselves but then they find themselves back to where they started. They’re the weird kids from the weird town that weird stuff kept happening to. But it’s not just Hawkins that’s asking questions anymore, it’s millions of people online, all over the world who want to know every detail about what happened to them

in the epilogue, robin says “looks like the hawkins curse is finally lifted” over a clip of steve’s baseball team. she means the supernatural occurrences have ended (like dustin says in s4) but i think. the curse wasn’t the upside down or vecna. that horror and violence is a natural part of reaganite (and 1950s) america. it’s the not the dark underbelly or alternative universe that threatens picturesque peaceful hawkins, it is hawkins itself. the curse was always the people who couldn’t be made to fit in. the town made circumstances unbearable for them like a body developing a fever until they — robin, joyce, will, dustin, lucas, nancy, jonathan, barb, bob, probably eventually erica, etc — left or died and the town could return to the status quo. no change, no danger, no deviance.

#it’s hard to feel happy that the status quo has returned to Hawkins and things are ‘peaceful’ now #when they spent so much time showing us (at least in the early seasons) how harmful that status quo was to many of the people living there #stranger things
