Speaking about that "found family" thing I hear too often now in this fandom... There seems to be an implication that romantic relationships cheapen a bond, or a story, or a character, and I honestly really resent that. Especially with DBH.

Found family is one of my favorite tropes, but can your partner not be your family? Is your partner not your friend, your confidant, and the person that helps you heal and uplifts you? Those things aren’t locked to just platonic or familial relationships. In terms of HankCon,

I think their story is one of the best examples of healing. Hank has lost everything to androids, he hates them and the world. Until you have Connor, who comes into his life and not only helps save the Android race but Hank too. He becomes his friend, his partner in crime (literally), and in my opinion, his romantic partner that loves him in all his flaws and pain.

I think a man falling in love with an Android, after having so much pain and hatred toward them, and having THAT person be the one to heal and love him is a beautiful story and it’s unfortunate it gets so little respect in some areas of this fandom.

The most interesting part is also that people who are usually against HankCon, they seem like the ones who are applying their personal feelings and issues to the characters.

They’re so desperate for Hank to see Connor as his son that they’re willing to ignore actual, thought out theories and interpretations; as well as harass and bully those who see them as romantic. They take it as a person offense and that’s weird. Maybe they’re the ones who have “daddy issues” (because it is the strongest argument they usually use against shippers) since they need Hank to be Connor’s dad so badly.

I, personally, don’t need another father. I don’t want Hank to be my father or see him that way. I’m an adult who sees these two other adults as romantic.

I mean I’m not saying EVERYONE who hates HankCon wants Hank to be his dad, but the ones who are strongly Anti-HankCon and will beat you down teeth and nail… it does seem a bit odd, and I do feel like there might be some projection there. Even in other fandoms where people INSIST on platonic/familial relationships between two characters that aren’t, I wonder about this same thing. Definitely a pattern I’m noticing, especially since a lot of the platonic/familial people seem to be on the younger side.

Statements made by creators outside the work are not canon. I said what I said.

Saying "Adam Williams/Bryan Dechart said Hank loves Connor like a son" is not the same thing as saying the game canonically defines them as father and son.

That is outside commentary. It can support someone’s interpretation, sure, but it still is not the finished text itself. Canon is what the game actually establishes on screen, through dialogue, scenes, and outcomes. And the game never directly labels Hank and Connor as father and son. What it most clearly gives them is partners/coworkers, and in the best route, close friends.

What makes it even more hypocritical is how selective fandom gets about whose words suddenly count as "canon." If Bryan Dechart's words are canon... then... what about Clancy Brown’s perspective? It somehow doesn’t get the same status, even though he played Hank and knows his own character just as well. So why is one actor’s opinion treated like canon and the other isn’t? Because, clearly, actor commentary only "counts" when it supports the headcanon people already want.

People are free to personally read them as father-son. What gets annoying is when post-release comments get treated like they retroactively overwrite the actual game and magically turn one interpretation into canon fact. That is not how canon works. That is just people confusing commentary with text.

And people seem to forget what Bryan said before.

And two years later we've seen all kinds of depictions of people, expanded universe, altered reality... What do they think happened after the end of their stories?

I mean the whole point is your life is what you make of it. So if you are out there and read certain things into the story because that's what you need to tell your story, then that's the point.

So nobody's version of this story negates anybody else's version of this story. That's the entire point of the game — all these realities are happening at the same time".

And then Cage:

"That's so true because it's really a story we tell together with players. And that's what's so exciting about it. It's not just me telling a story. I'm just creating a landscape people can travel their own way within this landscape. And that's great. They can find what they are looking for in the story. Sometimes something they come with which is absolutely fine."

So, that makes the whole "but Adam Williams/Bryan Dechart said Hank loves Connor like a son, so that’s canon" argument even weaker is that in 2020 they were saying almost the exact opposite about Detroit as a story.

They were literally talking about how the whole point of the game is that the player builds their own story, that different versions of the story do not cancel each other out, and that people can find what they are looking for in it. They even said that nobody’s version negates anybody else’s version.

So no, I’m not really buying the idea that one later comment suddenly overrides the finished game and turns one interpretation into the only "correct" canon (considering, that the only canon is still the source material itself, if sth is not in the text, it's not canon). That is not even consistent with how they themselves talked about the game before.

People can say that quote supports their reading. Fine. But calling it canon law when the same people also said the whole point is that players shape their own version of the story? That’s a contradiction.

“bloodweave” this and “bloodweave” that but nobody talks enough about the fact that the dynamic between Astarion and Gale is literally just:

— gale trying to explain some ancient weave theory while astarion lounges across furniture like an overfed cat, interrupting every five minutes with “you’re very pretty when you’re pretentious, you know.”

— astarion pretending he doesn’t care about magic until gale casually lights candles with a flick of his wrist and suddenly astarion is staring at him like he personally hung the stars over waterdeep.

— gale being one of the first people to compliment astarion in ways that aren’t transactional. not “beautiful,” not “seductive,” but clever. funny. observant. things attached to personhood instead of performance.

— astarion absolutely abusing prestidigitation once he learns what it can do. gale walks into camp and all his wine has been chilled perfectly and there are dramatic rose petals everywhere and astarion’s sitting there acting like he has no idea how it happened.

— gale reading aloud at night because astarion likes the sound of his voice even when he claims the books are “terminally boring.”

— astarion stealing gale’s clothes specifically because they smell like parchment, cedar, and expensive spell components.

— the first time gale sees astarion genuinely, uncontrollably laugh, he forgets what he was saying mid-sentence because he’s too busy staring.

— gale, who spent years loving a goddess who felt unreachable, falling disastrously hard for someone painfully real and sharp-edged and frightened.

— astarion acting smug whenever gale gets flustered, only to completely short-circuit the second gale starts flirting back intentionally.

“careful, my dear,” gale murmurs, leaning close enough for candlelight to catch in his earring, “you do realize wizards are capable of learning patterns.”

and astarion just. visibly bluescreens.

— they would either spend the entire evening making out dramatically over a study desk or arguing over semantics for three hours straight. sometimes both simultaneously.

— gale kissing astarion’s hands like they belong to something holy.

— astarion, who spent centuries being consumed, discovering what it feels like to be adored. slowly. reverently. without expectation.

together they become absolutely insufferable in the most romantic way imaginable.

I saw the announcement for this visual novel on tiktok and went to play the demo just for this beauty. Just look at him (the Hank vibes are blaring) and of course I named the character I’m playing Connor. The novel's name is "Love & Fool's Gold."

A lot of people are just fundamentally incapable of seeing Connor as fully adult.

And I say that because I recently had a conversation where someone was seriously describing him as basically an "empty vessel" who does not really have an identity until the very end. Not because the game presents him that way, but because some people genuinely seem unable to process Connor as an already existing adult person who gains autonomy, rather than a blank child-shaped thing slowly becoming real.

That is where so much of the weirdness starts. Connor specifically keeps getting made smaller, less formed, and less fully adult than the game actually shows him to be. And once people start from that lens, everything around him gets warped with it.

I’ve seen the same thing with Pragmata too, where people compare Hugh and Diana to Hank and Connor as if that proves anything. But again, that’s exactly the problem: fandom keeps grabbing completely different relationships, flattening them down to a few basic traits, and then pretending that those traits are enough to make the dynamics interchangeable.

I keep seeing these edits that use the Silent Hill 2 audio ("Mary?" / "I’m not your Mary") except every time the name Mary is said, people turn it into "Cole."

It's just... doesn't make any sense? Because in the original, that scene is not about a child, and it’s not about "a father recognizing his son." It’s built around a man encountering a woman tied to the image of his dead wife, and the whole thing works not only through grief, but through the fact that she is also framed with clear romantic/sexual undertones, basically the image of his wife and a possible new lover at the same time.

And that is what people are trying to force into being about Cole.

So you’re literally taking a scene where a man confronts the image of his dead wife and another woman who echoes her, and trying to turn it into "look, it’s his son." That’s not deep. It’s just ridiculous.

If someone really wants to play with the idea of replacement, repetition, and painful projection, that would make way more sense with another RK800 like RK900, or even a later version after a previous Connor dies. There, the whole "not the same person, but too similar" angle would at least actually fit. But no... apparently without dragging Cole into it, the theory falls apart, so people keep shoving him into scenes that were clearly built around a completely different kind of dynamic.

And the comments under those videos make it even worse especially the ones going "Cole’s photo is literally just a childhood picture of Bryan Dechart." Sorry, what? Who even started that rumor? Why does that nonsense keep getting repeated like it’s some accepted fact? At this point it really feels like this fandom can take any random made-up claim, repeat it often enough, and suddenly people start treating it like canon.
