And yet, not unexpected; the Pokémon telegraphing its intent and temper from the moment they had encountered each other.

Pathetic dog. Wasn’t even the worst Fire-type canine he’d faced down.

If the Growlithe expected Persian to lash out with teeth or claws or to turn tail or run, he was in for a shock!

That precious gem in his forehead glistened red a mere moment; a foreboding herald of the eruption of energy that followed.

Power Gem. Not the stronger move in his arsenal, no–but certain to make any poor Fire-type’s day much worse. And indeed, it was hurtling straight for the puppy’s lunge, without mercy.

It happened again.

As the move hit him, memories flash in swift pictures. A horrendous image of that Golduck. He's overwhelmed with water; it drowns him from the outside in. A flash of the blue bipedal creature, gem glowing as water regurgitates from a parted beak. A shrieking whine and yelps. Coughing, coughing, coughing. Gagging and gulping.

This time, it hits his bones. The power bashes into its now battered body, shivering him from the inside out. Bones quake and rumble, causing him to instinctively freeze up, body jolting back with a sudden jerk. Muscles tense and bound up from the intensity of such a powerful move.

No, this wasn't like Golduck. This was worse.

A dreadful yelp. It's sharp. Intense. The Growlithe lets out a horrible yowl, tumbling back and rolling a few feet back from the force of the move. Body now bruised, battered, and covered with earth. A cloud of dust lifting into the air as he settles.

No sound. No whimpering. No whining.

Growlithe had fainted.

Celeste could see that this little guy wanted to have a battle. Yet, she wasn't sure if she should be the one for that. All of the Pokemon Celeste had on her were much higher level than this Growlithe; even with her Meowscarada who had the type disadvantage, it would be a completely unfair fight!

"I'm sure you're strong bud. You deserve a fair fight, but sadly I can't give that to you." Guilt was in her tone as she spoke, "I hope you can understand."

She couldn't bring herself to battle the puppy knowing full well that injuries weren't a possibility, but something guaranteed to happen if she had chosen to accept this ask of the Pokemon.

A huff, akin to a bratty teenager letting out a smug scoff. How annoying! Growithe approached someone and they don't even want to?! One of the few times he went out of his way. This is such a disappointment. Brows furrow and he barks in disagreement, stomping a foot down. Shaking head now, as it persists anyway. It can fight her! He knows it! And he bets he can win! Those pokemon she has couldn't be that tough.

It wags its tail furiously. It claws at the ground with pride, dirt flying up in the air. The poor puppy wasn't letting up! With an exasperated inhale, it spews out bark after bark, insisting, persisting -- being as mulish as ever.
