we talk about the most impactful and powerful scenes in sinners, and most of them are solid contenders. but to me, no scene will hit harder than this.
this right here shows what they had, and what they lost. family. friends. community. freedom. this is what smoke is willing to die for. it’s not just remmick that took that from him, but the klan, because the klan was going to take that from them come morning light anyways. but it’s not just the contextual importance of the scene that makes it the hardest hitting one for me - it’s the social importance.
because THIS is what colonialism and white supremacy has taken from people of colour, especially the black community.
I am not a member and so cannot speak on the matter, but as someone who comes from a country very heavily exploited by colonialism, I felt this in my bones. our oppressors took this from us - they took our brothers and fathers, our husbands and sons, our grandmas and sisters and wives and daughters. our friends, our culture, our history.
and with a civil war darkening america’s horizons, this scene is a powerful reminder of what we’re fighting to keep.
If anyone is wondering where we are on a scale of 1 to fucked, Weird Al Yankovic just did a full cover of Rage Against the Machine - Killing In the Name
In this man's 46 year long career, through everything, he has NEVER spoken about politics. He has NEVER spoken harshly to anyone. He has NEVER performed songs with heavy swearing or forceful lyrics. This man guest starred on My Little Pony as "Cheese Sandwich," the only other party pony as fun as Pinkie Pie!
When THIS man stops laughing, we are in trouble.
Seeing Weird Al screaming "FUCK YOU I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME" with his whole chest, zero comedy, really is like seeing the nicest person you know finally snap because everything around him is so fucked up and horrible. I've always respected Weird Al as an artist and as a person, and this has only upped my respect for him.
I am hanging from a hook in the ceiling
like animal carcass.
I am splayed open, salted and tenderized.
My fatty bits sectioned off with bakers twine.
Red juices weep from my wounds.
Not blood, but the meat sweating
for better flavor.
A heavy palm comes down hard on my rump.
He lifts from the flank.
He samples the breast.
Hunger animates his body but he knows he must wait until the meat is ready.
He massages oils into the fibrous texture.
Working it in with the strong flat pads of his thumbs and fingers.
The meat is shivering.
The meat is shaking.
I’m told this is a chemical process.
Even once dead and removed from the body,
the meat dances on the table.
Due to the residual energy and nerve endings present in the tissue.
The flesh will twitch.
But it must be ready.
When it is ready he’ll carve it off in slabs,
and drop them into his mouth;
a mouse falling into the mouth of a snake
hanging by the tail.
He’ll glide the knife under the muscle
and it will slide down his throat
but it must be ready.
The meat is hanging but will not dry.
It drips
and drips
more juices.
The air is escaping.
The tendons are loosening.
He ties her off again and again.
Soon little lamb.
Soon.

thinking of halsey's writing the poem "date with an arsonist"
sometimes I think about how rattlesnakes are starting to adapt to bite immediately instead of using their rattle as a warning, because this defense mechanism that says "im here! im frightened! don't come close or ill bite you" has instead ilicited a reaction of "oh fuck a rattlesnake, i should kill it"
so of course every snake that has the instinct to warn humans of its presence gets killed, and only the snakes that bite first and dont make themselves known get to survive. a human who's been bitten is too worried about his swelling ankle to decapitate a snake with a shovel.
it's a good example of how humans make the world more dangerous for ourselves by believing that we have mastery and ownership of it. we think we have the power and importance to control the life around us down to the snakes and insects, but every animal fights for life. and no animal thinks that any human is more important than it's own life.
If I were Alice Cullen, I’d 100% have a little side hustle in the girls’ bathroom reading palms and giving chaotic predictions just for shit and gigs. I mean, they’ve gotta make going to school for the hundredth time at least somehow fun.
I am completely and utterly normal about rivers, creeks, lakes, forests, ponds, hills, mountains, and other natural landscapes (lying)

HARD TIMES (x)
The class war is staggeringly rigged against the working class. The majority of households are living under extreme economic trauma.
End the trauma. Abolish Republicans.
not to sound like a medieval peasant but, cheese and bread. garlic and butter. a menagerie of spices. potatoes. that’s what life is all about right there.
