HOly fuck you guys, I’m so sorry for being gone a ridiculous amount of time!!! It’s been what, several months?? I won’t give excuses, but I will say that my interest in CC declined a lot, which I think was the mean reason. I also have memory problems, and I genuinely totally forgot about these blogs. Jeez. Again, I’m really sorry. I’m back now, hopefully for a while, and I’ll do my best to catch up! If I’ve missed anything important, please @, msg, or ask whichever blog it applies to! Max paused thoughtfully. “Well, have you ever considered taking a few tips from Daniel? When he was here, everything ran a lot smoother. Maybe if you tried doing things his way, you would be more successful!”

     “Gee, I dunno about that, Max…” There was an obvious cringe at the mention of the blonde’s name, gaze averting itself from the child’s as he rubbed anxiously at the back of his neck. Okay, something was definitely wrong here. Max hated Daniel! The normal Max did, anyway. His expression flashed with insight as he remembered that sauna, worried eyes meeting the boy’s once more. “Have you… seen Daniel lately?”

Max hesitated. He wasn’t supposed to lie, but the way David’s expression had changed made him suspicious that the counselor knew what was going on. “Nope! Not since he went to the hospital. Why do you ask?”

Max glances down at the kid. “Because white is the best color for clothes. Obviously!”

“I…” He paused for a moment to think. “I know that you’re trying to help in the way that you think is best. I appreciate that. I really do! But, there is something wrong, actually…” he trailed off, and then picked up again. “Not with me though! It’s a problem with you! You’re going about everything all wrong!”

     Normally, words like that would earn a genuine smile from David, perhaps a small pat on the child’s shoulders as he asked them to elaborate. David tried his best, but he couldn’t know what was the best for everyone. No one could. As such, a bit of criticism every once in a while, especially from the kids he was trying to take care of, was more than welcome. 

But right now, David could only feel incredibly unnerved.

“Oh yeah?” His words sounded oddly defensive, which he winced at slightly. He hadn’t meant to sound rude, or anything of the sort. “W-Well, I’m only trying to do my best to take care of you all, so if you have any ideas on what I could be doing better, I’m all ears!”

“That’s right,” Max sighed. His voice was sad, but the smile persisted. “And where was it getting me? I’m happy now, and I can make you happy too. Don’t you want to be happy, Neil?”

“This isn’t you, Max,” He draws a shaky breath. “I know the real Max and the real Max..would be swearing any nearby adult out.”

Max’s smile grew somehow even wider. It looked a bit tense. “I’m not supposed to swear as much- but I don’t mind! I am the real Max. This is Max, this is as Max as it gets! Can’t you see how much better this is? How much of an improvement this is over my old ways? Why won’t you let me help you?”

Neil feels sweat forming on the back of his neck. “Jesus, this is..” He steps back, slowly shaking his head.

He darted his arm out and grabbed Neil’s wrist tightly. “It’s what? The best thing you’ve ever heard? Come on, Neil. Don’t you want everything to feel okay?”

“I-..I…” Neil shivers, trying to pull away from him but finding that Max was about as tough as a leech.

Max tightened his grip more. His smile looked about ready to tear his face in half. “Well? are you going to make this difficult, or will you let me help?”

Neil winces at the tight hold on his wrist, he’s starting to lose circulation. “Stop! G-get away from me!”

He narrowed his eyes and suddenly jerked his head to the right with a sharp crack. “Come on, Neil,” he repeated in a low voice. “I’m only trying to help you!”

Neil nearly cries out in terror. “Jesus fucking Christ! You sound just like-” Realization makes its way onto Neil’s face. “Just like Daniel…”

Max’s eyes widened in surprise, and then he laughed. “It took you that long? Seriously? Of course I sound like Daniel! This was Daniel’s idea. He’s so smart…” he sighed contentedly, still holding Neil’s wrist. “I wish I was like Daniel…” He blinked his eyes a few times until he was focused again. “But if you come with me, I can help you be the next best thing! I’d come too, but I have lots more people to help. Daniel says I can’t ascend until I’ve helped everyone else. And that’s okay! I’m really good at being patient.”

“MAX! WAKE THE FUCK UP!” He screams, trying to jerk away and run.

Startled by Neil’s sudden jerk, he lost his grip for just a second and stumbled forward. “Ah- hey!” He exclaimed. “Neil! That was a rude thing to say. This is the real me! Don’t you want to be the real you, too? I don’t have to worry about negative emotions at all, and neither would you! It’s just so much better this way!”

He feels relieved, rubbing his wrist. “St-Stop,” Neil’s voice cracks.

“Stop what?” He asked innocently. “Stop being true to myself? Stop being happy? Would you really ask that of me? Don’t you want the best for me? Don’t you care?” As he spoke, his voice grew louder and more demanding, but that smile stayed plastered across his face.

Neil trembles, his shaky legs taking him back a few steps. He was absolutely terrified.

Max’s voice suddenly softened. “I don’t want to hurt you, and I don’t want to leave you behind. Please come with me.”

“F…” his lip quivers. “Fine…” He obliges, in fear of being hurt.

“Don’t be scared, Neil! You just made the best decision of your life. I promise!” A happy laugh bubbled out of his throat. “Let’s get started!” He grabbed Neil’s hand excitedly and started in the direction of the sauna.

Neil allows himself to be lead to the sauna, recognizing the faint scent of detergent.

"Do you wanna do this alone, or would it make you more comfy if I went in too? I don't mind either way!"

Max’s smile widened slightly. “Why would I be faking? I just feel really good today! Just because I’m doing something odd doesn’t mean I’m lying to you, David, and to be perfectly honest, I’m a little bit offended that that’s the conclusion you leapt to.” He shrugged, adding casually, “Besides, faking a smile is your job, not mine.”

     His smile was quick to falter at the child’s oddly chilling words, but he, (ironically, perhaps) forced it to stay in place, tilting his head in obvious confusion as ANXIETY was quick to seep into his expression. Eyebrows furrowed with worry, although it was a bit hard for him to register what, exactly, worried him about Max’s response. Or perhaps he just didn’t want to admit to himself that it was EVERYTHING that worried him, from the smile, to his words, to the small, casual shrug he gave him- as if this was all completely normal for Max when it so obviously wasn’t.

“What are you talking about, Max? My smiles aren’t fake. You know how much I love you and the other campers, right?” Hopefully it wasn’t obvious that he was kind of reaching here, but his latter question was genuine, at least. Which is why he was so goddamn concerned right now. “Are you… sure everything’s okay? I’m THRILLED to see you happy and excited, of course, but this isn’t really like you. If there’s something wrong… You can tell me about it, Max. You know that, right?

“Heeeey, Morgan!” Max called, cupping his hand around his mouth as he jogged up to the other camper. “There’s a massive ant infestation in this old building over here!” He motioned towards the sauna, barely visible through the trees. “It’s not my cup of tea, but I think you’d probably appreciate it! Wanna see?” He smiled wide, resting his hands in his hoodie pocket.

“Hm? Um- sure, Max!” Morgan said, somewhat confused about the boy’s uncharacteristically cheerful attitude. “Lead the way!”

“Great!” He headed off through the woods a decently fast pace without looking back. It took a couple of minutes to reach the sauna’s rounded, porthole-d door, but once he did, he turned back to Morgan, still grinning, and rested his hand on the door handle. “Ladies first,” he said, and swung the door open.

Alright. Something was DEFINITELY off. “Um… actually, I need too… run back, and uh- g-grab some equipment! S-so I could… get a better look at the ants! Y-yeah…” she slowly began to back away.

Max’s smile faded the tiniest bit, then came back wider than before. “Come on, Morgan. It’s a long walk back to camp, and the ants are right here. You can come back with equipment later!”

“N-no, really! It’s ok! Besides, we’re not sure if this species is dangerous or not… Better safe than sorry!” Morgan turned around hastily, prepared to walk away.

He rolled his eyes. “How dangerous can an ant be? Just come and look!” He dropped his hands into his hoodie pockets, fingers curling around the knife hidden there. He hoped it wouldn’t come to that. He liked Morgan. She was nice. He wanted to help her, not hurt her. But…

“C-C’mon! It’ll only take a few minuets. And we’ll come right back here after I’ve got everything! I promise!” She looked back at Max, flashing a nervous smile.

Max tensed for a few seconds, then relented. “Okay! Let’s grab your stuff. Which tent are you in?” He let go of the knife.

She let out the breath she didn’t know she was holding. “Alright! My tent’s this way.” Morgan started towards camp, motioning for Max to follow.

He trotted after her, mind racing with what to do now. She’d promised she’d come back to see the non-existent ants, so he might be able to keep control of the situation. But she seemed to believe something was up- what if she went to another camper? Or a counselor? He bit his lip, He’d have to cross that bridge once they got there.

As the two neared the campgrounds, Morgan turned to Max. “Uh, Hey, Max… Are you… Ok? You kinda seem less… Hateful towards the world. I-I mean, it’s not a bad thing if you want to change for the better! It’s just, you’ve kinda just switched out of the blue, and it’s a bit jarring.” She bit her lip, unsure of how the boy would react to her statement.

As the two neared the campgrounds, Morgan turned to Max. “Uh, Hey, Max… Are you… Ok? You kinda seem less… Hateful towards the world. I-I mean, it’s not a bad thing if you want to change for the better! It’s just, you’ve kinda just switched out of the blue, and it’s a bit jarring.” She bit her lip, unsure of how the boy would react to her statement.

“Heeeey, Morgan!” Max called, cupping his hand around his mouth as he jogged up to the other camper. “There’s a massive ant infestation in this old building over here!” He motioned towards the sauna, barely visible through the trees. “It’s not my cup of tea, but I think you’d probably appreciate it! Wanna see?” He smiled wide, resting his hands in his hoodie pocket.

“Hm? Um- sure, Max!” Morgan said, somewhat confused about the boy’s uncharacteristically cheerful attitude. “Lead the way!”

“Great!” He headed off through the woods a decently fast pace without looking back. It took a couple of minutes to reach the sauna’s rounded, porthole-d door, but once he did, he turned back to Morgan, still grinning, and rested his hand on the door handle. “Ladies first,” he said, and swung the door open.

Alright. Something was DEFINITELY off. “Um… actually, I need too… run back, and uh- g-grab some equipment! S-so I could… get a better look at the ants! Y-yeah…” she slowly began to back away.

Max’s smile faded the tiniest bit, then came back wider than before. “Come on, Morgan. It’s a long walk back to camp, and the ants are right here. You can come back with equipment later!”

“N-no, really! It’s ok! Besides, we’re not sure if this species is dangerous or not… Better safe than sorry!” Morgan turned around hastily, prepared to walk away.

He rolled his eyes. “How dangerous can an ant be? Just come and look!” He dropped his hands into his hoodie pockets, fingers curling around the knife hidden there. He hoped it wouldn’t come to that. He liked Morgan. She was nice. He wanted to help her, not hurt her. But…

“C-C’mon! It’ll only take a few minuets. And we’ll come right back here after I’ve got everything! I promise!” She looked back at Max, flashing a nervous smile.

Max tensed for a few seconds, then relented. “Okay! Let’s grab your stuff. Which tent are you in?” He let go of the knife.

She let out the breath she didn’t know she was holding. “Alright! My tent’s this way.” Morgan started towards camp, motioning for Max to follow.

“This isn’t you, Max,” He draws a shaky breath. “I know the real Max and the real Max..would be swearing any nearby adult out.”

Max’s smile grew somehow even wider. It looked a bit tense. “I’m not supposed to swear as much- but I don’t mind! I am the real Max. This is Max, this is as Max as it gets! Can’t you see how much better this is? How much of an improvement this is over my old ways? Why won’t you let me help you?”

Neil feels sweat forming on the back of his neck. “Jesus, this is..” He steps back, slowly shaking his head.

He darted his arm out and grabbed Neil’s wrist tightly. “It’s what? The best thing you’ve ever heard? Come on, Neil. Don’t you want everything to feel okay?”

“I-..I…” Neil shivers, trying to pull away from him but finding that Max was about as tough as a leech.

Max tightened his grip more. His smile looked about ready to tear his face in half. “Well? are you going to make this difficult, or will you let me help?”

Neil winces at the tight hold on his wrist, he’s starting to lose circulation. “Stop! G-get away from me!”

He narrowed his eyes and suddenly jerked his head to the right with a sharp crack. “Come on, Neil,” he repeated in a low voice. “I’m only trying to help you!”

Neil nearly cries out in terror. “Jesus fucking Christ! You sound just like-” Realization makes its way onto Neil’s face. “Just like Daniel…”

Max’s eyes widened in surprise, and then he laughed. “It took you that long? Seriously? Of course I sound like Daniel! This was Daniel’s idea. He’s so smart…” he sighed contentedly, still holding Neil’s wrist. “I wish I was like Daniel…” He blinked his eyes a few times until he was focused again. “But if you come with me, I can help you be the next best thing! I’d come too, but I have lots more people to help. Daniel says I can’t ascend until I’ve helped everyone else. And that’s okay! I’m really good at being patient.”
