William Bruce Ellis Ranken was born in Edinburgh in 1881, the second son of Robert Burt Ranken, a successful lawyer, and his wife Mary. He was educated at Eton and the Slade School of Art under Henry Tonks. Ranken had his first solo exhibition at the Carfax Gallery in London in 1904.
A prolific artist, he also worked in oil and watercolor and his work includes portraits, interiors, landscapes and still lifes. Among his many subjects in his art were topics the members of the British royal family and the aristocracy.
He died suddenly in London in 1941 and was buried in the cemetery of Eversley.
