You know they haven't actually figured out whether reds have internal experiences or not, right? Like I am not suggesting that means they're the same as *clean* people or that the fact that you would have a red killed means you're a danger to others but, like, it seems slightly disingenuous to say you would never have a person killed.

There is no chance reds are people. There is no chance that reds are objects of moral concern. This is not, and has never been, up for debate. You fucking lunatics are horrifying embarrassments to our species and the second-best thing about how we’re getting rid of all reds now is that you’re going to spend all your money and energy trying to stop it and thankfully never have children.

Lathande, Orvara - Today the city of Lathande announced that in cooperation with local theologians they have arranged for purple Orvarans to learn red occupations, which given modern technology and safety standards can be performed without substantial risk of pollution.  Click here for a complete standards and practices writeup.  Although there is an initial cost outlay associated with the training and equipment, and purple workers are more expensive than reds, the city is ameliorating these costs via the sale of the now unoccupied red district of Lathande, soon to be demolished and cleaned.  Lathande was declared red-free this morning.

Well I’m glad someone is getting rid of their reds. It’s well past time. I said that the clean castes could find a way to deal with all the pollution if we got rid of them and I look forward to being proven right.

...Not to side with the trash or anything, but we don't have robots yet??? If all the reds die then garbage piles up in the street. I understand your frustration but let's not make a bad situation worse. I wish we had robots and it wasn't an issue but right now I'm terrified of someone getting angry and burning down the red district and drowning in filth.

Why don’t we have robots yet, though? Oh that’s right, because every time anyone discusses it reds start killing people! If we get rid of the reds we can actually start working on robots! We can limp along until then. If our options are having slightly increased pollution among clean castes and no reds or having reds stay and also increased pollution because they’re touching everything, I say let’s get rid of them!

So I’ve thus far managed to avoid buying any polluted food for my family (thank you to everyone who’s donated!!!), but work is still selling the polluted stuff. It’s all marked as probably polluted, but some people are getting hungry enough to buy it, which means I have to touch it during checkout. We have a couple checkout counters reserved for clean food, but I’m getting paid more not to work at those. It’s juuust enough extra to be worth the gross polluted feeling all shift and the obnoxious showering process afterwards. *sigh* I’ll be so glad when we’re finally past all this.

I did that the first few weeks, but everyone else had the same idea. :( The price of disposable gloves has spiked about as much as the price of clean food has. I’ve been reusing the same pair of gloves for long enough now that I’m not actually sure that handling them isn’t worse than just handling the polluted food directly. Tongs and paper are just a little too clumsy to handle a lot of the bulk items (which, let’s be real, is what all the people who have to put up with the polluted food were buying anyway).

The amount of people working with all the polluted food from this crisis, be they investigators, shop workers, cooks, whatever, is probably at least as great as the amount of reds living in Voa. That’s not counting people who work with garbage already (red social workers, red delivery people, etc) or the people who have to EAT the polluted food even if they avoid working with it.

(responding to the answer about why we don't have robots yet) Okay but do we actually know how to do their jobs in the meantime?? Like, maybe we can work out trash collection and handling bodies, that seems simple (although that will be hell for the people doing it? and you realize it will be us purples they'll make do it?), but how does plumbing even work? and does anyone know how to do the stuff they do for cops and doctors?

You know that there are already purple plumbers, right? Obviously they don’t work with sewage pipes, but presumably the principle is the same. Cops and doctors probably know what reds do for them. 

And honestly, if I could sign up to do a red job for a few months (where I could decontaminate afterward, obviously) in exchange for knowing for sure that none of my food was polluted I would probably do it. I assume there’s other purples who wouldn’t even include the “probably” in that sentence.

Have any dishonest Voans been selling polluted food and trying to pass it off as normal? If so, how long do they take to be discovered, and by what means?

God, I hope not. I mean, we’re still not sure we’ve found all the sources of pollution. We’ve found some and maybe that’s all there are, but maybe not you know? So really if you want clean food in Voa right now you’re looking for imported stuff and that’s usually pretty obvious from packaging. I guess someone could be repackaging their stuff, but the place I work at is getting all our foreign foods from the same sources as always and I assume that’s true of other places.

Hey, I'm the person who sent the donation of [amount of Voan money equal to about $10] this afternoon. Your attitude toward reds is completely uncalled for. Most of us had nothing to do with this and complete innocents who were taken as much by surprise as you were have been hurt and even killed. Well, I’ve mentioned where I live before so I really hope you managed to figure it out before throwing accusations around. I wasn’t even the one who came up with the idea, one of my coworkers did, so I think saying I did it “personally” is stretching things a bit even if we assume that my workplace is the only one that got the idea. I got a second job to help pay for clean food and everyone on this website is being kinda pissy at Voans (even though we’re the ones being hit the hardest by this food crisis!). I don’t really want to spend what little free time I have dealing with that, yanno?

This morning Tapa declared war on Voa.  See here for how to safely travel home if you are abroad.  They have announced that they are seeking the means to achieve domestic food security; until this is accomplished, Tapa is on rationing.  See here for ration protocol details if you live in Tapa or a protectorate.

Governor Avalor’s office released this statement:

Despite our endeavors to audit and assure the safety of our food supply as quickly as possible, our efforts to find a peaceful solution to Allocator Savo’s orchestration of disaster have failed.  Tapa has indicated that they will not settle for a restoration of the status quo, even if Allocator Savo were to be extrajudicially put to death or extradited.

Internal debate among the governors about whether to execute Allocator Savo regardless are ongoing.  But Tapa and their allies in this matter have made it known that their intended war of aggression is not about retaliation against the instigator of the hysteria.  It is about their belief that a war and, should they take territory, their own auditing process, will be a better path towards clean food for all than permitting Voa to internally address a problem which has hit our people harder than anyone.

I know our soldiers are ready to defend Voa against this invasion.  Civilian populations near the border will find increased train service available to take them west if they wish to travel.
