One last photo of us from the hike to Virginia Falls! This seems like a good way to finish up documenting our trip.

We ended up cutting our glacier stay a day short because it was pouring when we woke up the next morning. It is definitely a park that both of us would love to go back to.

Glacier Day 2: Hike to Saint Mary's Falls and Virginia Falls

On the second day of Glacier we got started a little late (and Jenelle had a headache) so we took the shuttle through the whole park to take in the scenery. We don't have pictures from along the Going to the Sun Road because taking pictures through the window wouldn't do it justice, but we did go on a ~4 mile hike to see some beautiful waterfalls. We didn't see any bears here... but if we would have run into one on a hike this would have been where that would happen.

Glacier Day 1: Avalanche Creek Trail

Technically this was our second day of Glacier (the first went into the park briefly and then found somewhere to camp outside of the part instead of camping 20 miles down a 20mph gravel road). For the second night we decided to camp at Avalanche Creek and go on a hike that was right off of the campground. The hike was right along a beautiful creek, and led up to a glacial lake. Leighton decided that he wanted to go swimming and get clean, but really he just went under for a second and then popped back out shivering. The entire scene was just really peaceful, we could have sat by the lake for hours.

Yellowstone Day 2: Mammoth Hot Springs Part 1

This was Jenelle's favorite part of Yellowstone. The terraces made from built up mineral deposits were really beautiful. And the color changes were crazy... apparently the springs often turn on and off, so when they are off bacteria grow giving them yellow and orange colors, but when they stop flowing they dry out and have a grey-kind of dead/alien world appearance. And the kind of dead trees that are still left around the mineral deposits are crazy. This place really did feel like we were not on earth any more.

Yellowstone Day 2: Upper Geyser Basin Part 2

Bear Tracks! We thought so at least. And some buffalo prints.

Morning Glory Pool... Right before Leighton was going to die because we didn't eat enough food for breakfast.

Castle Geyser probably ~20 minutes before erupting? We didn't stay to watch because both of us really needed food. And the crowds were starting to get huge.

Yellowstone Day 2: Upper Geyser Basin Part 1

We started the morning really early (left the campground before 7:00) to get to Old Faithful before the crowds hit. We missed a 7:30ish eruption by about 5 minutes, so we walked up to to upper geyser basin viewpoint, and then walked back down to see the eruption around 9:00. The rest of the pictures are of other things in the upper geyser basin, including Grand Geyser eruption. The colorful pools were really beautiful.

Yellowstone Day 1: Part 4 (?)

First two photos are of the Yellowstone River in the valley/plains close to mud volcano. This is where there were giant herds of buffalo.

The remaining photos are in the West Thumb Geyser Basin. There were a few really deep, clear blue hot springs here. Leighton really liked them. A lot of the boardwalks were falling apart here (or getting overrun with the hot spring water) so they were replacing them, but it was kind of terrifying to be less than 5 inches away from falling into a giant pit of steaming algae filled water. There were also animal bones in some of the hot springs, just to add to the eeriness.

Sure, these are late, but for completeness sake the remaining pictures from our trip are being uploaded tonight! If we get around to it, we have some interesting gas and milage statistics that might be shared later... but there are no promises.

We will finish posting pictures from our time without internet in the next few days. For now, here is a sign from a cornfield in Oregon.

Day 34, 5310 miles

Well our trip is pretty much over. Headed back to Eugene today.

Yellowstone Part 3: The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone

To finish up the first day in Yellowstone we continued our drive on the East side of the park and did a short (but steep) hike to see the lower falls. Then we went to the "Artist Point" to see one of the classic yellowstone views. There was an old burnt tree that leighton liked because it looked like a wizard staff. We also included some pictures from our drive in this post.

Yellowstone Part 2: Bison and Mud Pits

There were a lot of Bison/Buffalo all over the road right around the Mud Volcano area... cars really couldn't drive for a while and it was a little crazy. They were also making lots of funny noises. Most of the things in this area were mud pits, and everything smelled like sulfur. Apparently some of these features are some of the most acidic in the park?

Yellowstone Part 1: Storm Point and Indian Lake

The first day at Yellowstone we went on a hike on the Eastern side of the park. There were significantly fewer people in this area, and the walk through forests, fields, and along the coast was beautiful. Some parts of this walk made it seem like we were in the land of Skyrim... there were plenty of butterflies and wildflowers!

Grand Teton National Park

We didn't stay in the Tetons long, and it was rather rainy the first day that we were there, but there was a nice rocky beach by our campground where we went for a walk. The mountains were beautiful, especially when it got sunny! This is definitely a park where either of us would go back and spend a long amount of time at... there are tons of cool things to do like boating/rafting and climbing mountains that would be great if there was more time.
